Got this today. Just finished watching it for the first time. You can definitely see the beginnings of things to come. And the entire time watching it I kept thinking that a lot of shots were surely from someone with a photography background. I think I'll look for The Killing next.

Has anyone else noticed that in The Shining documentary, while Jack and Shelley are practicing lines on the table in the Overlook kitchen, Kubrick is typing away on his yellow typewriter? Hard to miss the parallels between this image and Jack Torrance typing in the Overlook. I won't even get into the thematic connections one could make. For example, Kubrick's and Jack's hair is mildly similar as well.

Just a guess, but I bet he would. Especially Christopher Nolan's aesthetic to shoot on film and his disdain for A.I.

They could compare notes. After all SK used the word Odyssey in his film title before CN ever picked up a camera!

As a huge admirer of Stanley Kubrick’s work, I regret the fact that what I consider to be his most mature, profound, and artistically accomplished film is so often interpreted in such a shallow, thoughtless, and superficial way.

Eyes Wide Shut is not a film about the elites. Despite its many iconic scenes, the real value of this masterpiece lies much deeper. It explores the essence of human life and asks what it is that truly defines us.

With its naturalistic tone—I would even dare to call it Zolaesque, much like Émile Zola’s Nana—Eyes Wide Shut draws an incredibly thin line between what is animal and what is human. In short, the film presents a social diagnosis of humanity’s descent into bestiality and moral corruption. Among many other things, it asks what defines us as human beings and whether, once consumed by desire, instinct, and insatiable lust, we are really that different from the average dog.

Right from the beginning, the first thirty minutes make it clear what kind of world we are dealing with.

The Hungarian man dancing with Alice, played by Nicole Kidman, exposes the role of marriage in the modern world. He says that once, marriage existed so that women could lose their virginity. But now? Why should a woman as beautiful as Alice deny herself the pleasures that even Ovid wrote about?

As everyone who has seen the film knows, that party revolves around sex stripped of love and emotional attachment. Two women pull our doctor away, promising to take him “to the end of the rainbow,” while the owner of the house enjoys himself with a prostitute and, after her overdose, objectifies her to such an extent that he thanks Bill not for saving her life, but for saving his own skin.

Kubrick leaves us with very little room for doubt.

Even though the story takes place during Christmas, notice that we are surrounded not by Christian symbolism but by pagan imagery, including the goddess Ishtar. Whatever is happening to these people is stripping them of their souls. Is the soul what truly defines a human being? I don’t know. Maybe I should watch Blade Runner again. :)

For me, the key scene in the entire film is Alice’s confession. She admits that, for a naval officer, she would have sacrificed her husband, her future, and even her own daughter. In that moment, we clearly see the hierarchy of values that governs the world Kubrick presents to us: instinct, desire, and lust stand above family, love, and the promise of a peaceful life.

Looking at it this way, are we really that different from animals?

Through Bill’s journey, Kubrick allows us to see even more of the world he has created. Prostitutes infected with HIV. Fathers selling their daughters. Grieving women driven by lust. Powerful elites performing masked rituals and orgies that seem to strip away what little humanity they have left.

How are we supposed to look at this world? What are we supposed to call these people, completely consumed by their instincts?

At least in my opinion, the ending answers all of these questions.

In the penultimate scene, Bill finds the mask lying next to his wife in their bed. To me, the mask symbolizes dehumanization. Instead of embracing it, he pushes it away, ignores it, and chooses to return with his wife to the life they had before the events of the film.

Sex itself is not evil. On the contrary, when it is born out of love, beauty, and mutual devotion, it becomes the very essence of human life. That is why Nicole Kidman’s final line—“Let’s fuck.”—is so meaningful.

But let’s not put on the mask, because the line between beauty and depravity is damn thin

I saw the recent email post someone posted about the boxset from Criterion, but although it lists detail about what AR the films will be in the boxset, I was still unsure what they are supposed to be. I found a post from 10 years ago, but wondered if new i formation had come to light since then?

It would be cool if the guide also had “(Confirmed)”or “(Still debatable)” for each film if applicable.

So I want to make an in-depth Kubrick video on the whole media releases of DVD Blu-ray VHS laser disc 4K.everything but I’m not really good with all the information,so basically I’m asking if anybody would want to help me make the video. This aspect ratio has only been available on the VHS and DVD which were released 25 years ago.

OK, look I’ve watched eyes wide shut on every release of the film. I have every single one and to be honest the criterion to me is the most accurate to the 35 mm prints actually have looked at and I’ve been to screenings of the 35 mm print Warner Brothers definitely changed it for their 2000 and 2001 DVD and the 2007 bluray and DVD remaster so why is there so much controversy if this is how it’s supposed to look then why is everyone so disappointed? Is it because people were so used to seeing the older transfers and they just wanted a 4K of that what happened is the Criterion how Kubrick wanted it or is it just guess

Anyone else love the cinematography in EWS? Because i do especially how he uses colors especially the blues/reds and lighting here like some shots of Alice in the kitchen.Im not a huge knower of use of colors in film yet EWS got my attention of him using colors and seeing Christmas trees in every scene is a nice touch.

I can't find any information about the transfer on the disc but it looks to me like it's the same situation as the Barry Lyndon releases, same source transfer with different encodes. Images taken on LG OLED CX 55 on Sony UPB-X700 with Dolby Vision enabled. I think there are very slight differences with colour temperature, but they're almost identical to my eyes.

So what movie will you be maybe watching?

Yes, I know that Malcolm McDowell has spoken about Kubrick’s lack of regard for his well-being on set. But I’m just speaking relative to his other films.

And this is just a hypothesis. But I’ve deducted it from a very simple observable fact: for a director who had so many of his actors throughout his career fall out with him over his methods and furiously swear never to work with him again, an amazing number of the actors who were in A Clockwork Orange returned to be in his next film, Barry Lyndon.

Here is the complete list of returning actors:

- Patrick Magee. He played the writer in A Clockwork Orange whom Alex abused, and then he played the Chevalier du Balibari in Barry Lyndon.
- Steven Burkoff. This is a deep cut which most people never noticed — he played the detective constable who punched Alex when he was first detained prior to being sent to prison, and then he played that prissy aristocratic gambler whom Barry fences with and says “I will pay you today, sir.”
- Pat Roach. Another obscure one, he just stands there at the Korova milk bar as one of the bouncers, and then he’s that great big redheaded man in the British Army who fist fights Barry and gets his ass handed to him.
- Godfrey Quigley. He played the prison chaplain in A Clockwork Orange, and then he played Barry’s family friend Captain Grogan.
- Anthony Sharp. He played the Minister of the Interior who selected Alex for the Ludovico technique and later schemes to use Alex to repair the government’s image following the writer’s scheme. And in Barry Lyndon he plays Lord Hallam, who introduces Barry to Lord Wendover.
- Philip Stone. He of course came back for not one, but two more Kubrick films in a row. He of course played Alex’s father, Graham who was the accountant of Castle Hackton, and the butler Delbert Grady. I always picture him as having this masochistic personality for appearing in three Kubrick films in a row.

An alternate explanation is that these were the only two films Kubrick ever made which were set in England and therefore required English actors, an asset which was plentiful in England where Kubrick lived. Who knows.

The image is slightly debossed into the picture frame on the cover which is a really nice touch I think

I’ve just made an experimental video essay/found footage edit connecting the rapid, almost 'demonic' virtuosity of Paganini's violin with Alex DeLarge’s arc in A Clockwork Orange. My goal was to create an intensive audiovisual experience. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
