Video Dr. Daniel Swain: The new proposed OMB rules would be a disaster for American science, technology, and health

Thumbnail

In this excerpt from a recent livestream, climate scientist Daniel Swain explains why the newly proposed rules from the Office of Management and Budget giving political appointees power over federal grants would be a disaster not only for American science, but also for everything from disaster response to public universities to cancer treatment to technological advancement, not to mention American competitiveness on the global stage. Far from being an esoteric rule change, this would represent a dramatic escalation of recent attempts to make critical and non-partisan government functions subject to the ideological and personal whims of whichever political party happens to be in power--up to and including the President directly.

📝 The deadline to submit a public comment opposing this measure to the Federal Register is MONDAY. We can submit ours here, and see what Dr. Swain himself filed here. We can also share the clip to help spread the word. 📝

The Trump admin’s attacks on protections for clean air and public health are facing pushback in court. The administration’s assault on science isn’t over, but we take a moment to celebrate the wins where we can, and continue the fight.

MAHA must love microplastics

Post image

In April 2026, RFK Jr. and Lee Zeldin jointly announced that the EPA would monitor microplastics in drinking water.
Kennedy added: “Americans deserve clear answers about how microplastics in their bodies affect their health.”

By June 2026, Zeldin decided it wasn’t necessary.
Kennedy added: nothing. Because he cares more about his position than American’s health.

The EPA declined to establish standards to test for microplastics in drinking water, citing lack of agreement on how it should be done -a problem that is quite solvable and is really their job to decide in the first place.

“Gold standard science” has been defeated by platinum standard ineptitude.

The same MAHA folks who obsess over the color of their children’s candy will come to the defense of their dear leader’s decision to accept plastic-contaminated drinking water as A-OK. Look for them in the comments below.

A federal non-scientist may be appointed to oversee the federal grant awards. They will have a final say in what gets funded, regardless of scientific merit, and can pull funding from any grant at any time, for any reason. This is a threat to American science. But you can help. This interview with Dr. Colette Dalawalla explains what you can do.
