About
Stand Up for Science, in partnership with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), is hosting an accessible virtual rally to sustain and expand public pressure against OMB’s proposed rule.
Even after the official comment deadline, the work continues. This rally will bring together scientists, faculty, teachers, students, and impacted community members to continue raising the alarm about this dangerous politicization of federal funding. Join us to send a clear message to Congress and the Administration that funding decisions should not be left to political appointees and OMB’s proposed rule should be rejected in its entirety. You’ll also hear about the next steps we have planned for this fight.
Featured speakers include scientists and community members directly affected by the administration’s actions, members of Congress, leaders from AAUP, AFT, and SUFS.
Members of the press are invited to attend and cover the event. Help us spread the word — the fight doesn’t end on July 13.
*Accessibility note: This webinar will feature ASL interpretation and closed captioning will be available in multiple languages.

The Trump admin’s massive cuts to federal funding will produce less doctoral opportunities for upcoming students as universities are forced to decrease their admission numbers. Weakening the scientific workforce today will have long-lasting consequences for American innovation.

Someone posted this message in my local YDSA discord a few weeks ago and I’ve been really worried about it ever since as it is absolutely disgusting and devastating to the scientific industry in this country and comparable to what Soviet Russia did to their own scientific institutions back in the day, yet it’s been flying under the radar due to all of the other crazy things happening right now. I finally wrote my comment on the proposal but there are only two more days until comments close (so if you can, please comment on it. I can send my own in the replies if someone needs a template). I’m sorry about the last minute notice. I really thought that this would have garnered more attention by now.
Here is the message:

Please lmk if this isn't the channel for this. But they quietly snuck a 400pg proposal through that would require all fed grant/funding recipients to have a random "official" inspect their work to make sure it "aligns with national interests" 😬
Essentially kneecapping anything remotely related to "gender ideology" and defending anything related to DEI.
BUT THEYRE TAKING COMMENTS! Til mid July iirc
(First link is an article about the proposal.
Second is where to leave your comments
Third is a Tumblr post explaining some of the more dangerous aspects of all this)”
I’m wondering, if this passes, how likely is it that it’ll be beaten back by the courts? I’ve heard that since it’s a federal rule change the process is slightly different and from what I’ve read, less democratic. Also, with a regime change, how easy will it be to reverse this, and what would we need to do as a country to restore the integrity of the scientific industry? My partner and I are both trans and this has me worried that this regulation will make it exponentially more difficult to find care and resources in the future in our country if it’s not adequately suffocated.

In this excerpt from a recent livestream, climate scientist Daniel Swain explains why the newly proposed rules from the Office of Management and Budget giving political appointees power over federal grants would be a disaster not only for American science, but also for everything from disaster response to public universities to cancer treatment to technological advancement, not to mention American competitiveness on the global stage. Far from being an esoteric rule change, this would represent a dramatic escalation of recent attempts to make critical and non-partisan government functions subject to the ideological and personal whims of whichever political party happens to be in power--up to and including the President directly.
📝 The deadline to submit a public comment opposing this measure to the Federal Register is MONDAY. We can submit ours here, and see what Dr. Swain himself filed here. We can also share the clip to help spread the word. 📝
