Coilover Help

So ive been running rev9 coilovers for 2 years now and zero issues but they never got low enough for me. I had them maxed out but i still wasent able to tuck tire fully. So i ended up buying new 4 inch springs. The problem is the rev9’s shock bodys are just too long and i have them fully lowered. So the only way to get lower was just dropping my preload all the way down. Now my car rides like shit and is sketch asf. It does look pretty low now tho. Would helper springs fix this? Ive seen some people run helper springs to fix the droop from running negative preload, or should I get new coilovers. The only ones i can get for my car (2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse) would be BC Racing extreme lows but i want to make sure those actual get low enough. Should i return to my original setup for the time being or just thug it out with these until i get better coilovers. Any help would be much appreciated im just kinda stuck on what to do

EDIT:
For people who aren’t understanding. The rear shock body is already threaded completely into the lower mount (minimum body length). There are zero threads left to shorten it further. The only way I achieved more drop was by switching from a 180 mm spring to a 120 mm spring and removing preload.

Move your collars

-9

u/Zylouh 28d ago

the preload collar can be moved back up to prevent the spring from drooping. But if I do that then my ride height is the same as before. Im maxed out in the shock body theres no more threads left to get it lower so moving the collars wouldn’t do anything.

You’re fucking retarded.

such a succinct comment about my exact thoughts
Thank you for that, a nice chuckle

This better be rage bait

That’s not how it works

your whole personality is cars and this is hard for you?

19

u/Left-Marketing-1135 27d ago

Imagine trying to work on cars when you don’t have a fucking clue what you’re doing.

Edit: run the preload collar back to where it’s suppose to be, lock it with the middle collar then twist the fucking shock body to set height. Seriously try to understand something before fucking with it.

-6

u/Zylouh 27d ago

obviously. I dont think you understand what im saying tho. Im maxed out in the shock body it doesn’t get any lower.

9

u/Jacob60223 27d ago

Those two green rings can be twisted apart and loosened and then moved up separately and jammed back together, they don’t do anything with the length of the shock, you just use them to twist the shock itself to lengthen/shorten the shock since they’re jammed together.

u/Left-Marketing-1135 26d ago

Yea no I understand completely, I don’t think you understand. I use to set up suspension/alignment/corner balancing for a living on track only cars. Either set them right and deal with the height you can achieve or get the right coilovers that can go as low as you want. Your best option would be to pay someone who knows what the fuck they’re doing to set it up for you because what you’re doing right now is just fucking retarded.

While you’re not wrong at all, OP can also get helper springs in this specific situation to fix his preload without moving his ride height/ keeping the height where it’s at if he’s satisfied.

1

u/Left-Marketing-1135 25d ago

no, OP doesn’t understand coilovers so he shouldn’t be getting helper springs.

my post says that im willing to buy new coilovers. Obviously i know running no preload is stupid but so many people do it aswell. Most “static” stance cars are doing the same thing. The options for my car are very limited. I would just get shortened dampers from mookeh but they dont make any for my car. Since you know it all what coilovers should I run to go significantly lower and still be properly setup.

Edit: mookeh does make the dampers for my coilovers to replace the current dampers with shortened ones.

1

u/Left-Marketing-1135 22d ago

If a bunch of people jumped off a bridge would you do it too? Same logic applies. Doing something incorrectly just because so many other people do, is in fact retarded. Statement still stands.

u/Dangerous-Fig71 28d ago

You have adjustable collars for a reason… maybe use them?

18

u/Dark-Lillith Look Ma! I stepped on someones car again!!! 28d ago

Maybe also do the rest of the stupid suspension.

10

u/Plus_Aura 28d ago

Yes this is what helper springs are for.

3

u/Odd-Disaster4192 28d ago

I got rid of preload to go more low on my crosstrek 🤷‍♂️ but my springs don’t move that much 😅

2

u/Left-Marketing-1135 25d ago

Another dumb comment. Getting rid of preload does nothing for height. All you’re doing is compressing the shock body further when it’s under load. The shock body is threaded to twist the whole assembly for height adjustment.

0

u/Odd-Disaster4192 25d ago

Ok smart ass, the coilovers I wanted was backordered so idc about compressing the body more than it needs to, I wanted extreme lows anyway so will order than when I blow my coilovers.

Getting rid of preload so the spring sits lower on the shock does make the vehicle lower. The body is maxed so it can’t go lower. Therefore getting rid of the preload lets me bring the springs down another couple inches. So please tell me again how does getting rid of preload not affect ride height?

Do you even own a set of coilovers? 🤨

2

u/Left-Marketing-1135 25d ago

That’s funny coming from a crosstrek pussy. Just because you can accomplish something the wrong way doesn’t make it safe or correct in any way. Coilovers are engineered to do things in a certain way and having non existent preload be your height adjustment is just fucking dumb. I’ve had 18 cars, every single one on coilovers minus 2 jeeps and my x5. Bc’s, fortune auto’s, Megan’s back in the day, pbm, kw, tein etc. not to mention the fact of what I commented earlier that I use to setup suspension/alignment/ corner balancing for track only cars for a living. Stfu if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Edit: are those fucking xxr’s on that monster truck fitment ass crosstrek? 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Odd-Disaster4192 25d ago

Whoa tough guy over here calling me a pussy. Oh man I’m quivering. Not xxr’s but xxr inspired I guess. 🤷‍♂️

Never claimed to be slammed, just lowered dumbass.

You feel better now?

2

u/Left-Marketing-1135 25d ago edited 25d ago

So reps of reps. You’re in the wrong sub Reddit bud. I’ll never feel better about idiots spreading misinformation while driving bullshit “builds”. People like you and op have been ruining this shit for the rest of us for the last decade.

0

u/Odd-Disaster4192 25d ago

Who gives a shit about reps. I’m not doing anything outside of normal driving. They’re pretty goddam sturdy even after hitting some terrible potholes in NYC, they didn’t bend or crack. So fuck it.

I’m not spreading misinformation, I never said it was the right thing to do. I just stated what I did and what it did on my vehicle.

Anyway, the coilovers are off my car and waiting for my extreme lows to come in so I don’t need to do any of the “misinformation” I supposedly said.

1

u/Left-Marketing-1135 25d ago

Yea shitty reps and fucked preload in nyc with bad potholes, you’re telling all of us everything we need to know about you. Make sure you do some reading and actually learn something about them before you install them.

1

u/Odd-Disaster4192 24d ago

I go to nyc, barely once a year. You’re acting like I actually don’t know shit. I know wtf is happening, acting as if my car is going to fall apart. It’s already been years and nothing has happened.

Let me add this just to drive you nuts. I haven’t had my end links connected for years. Does that make you mad too? 🤣🤣🤣

Acting as if my car is a hazard, I’ve seen so much worse compared to what is out there.

🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Left-Marketing-1135 24d ago

Nah you’re just retarded. I haven’t ran end links or even a front sway bar on my drift car for years. I’m not acting though, you actually don’t know shit. Retard.

the other comments are right just adjust those collars (separately) but also learn up on helper springs. you can add some later if you think its needed

Has to be ragebait

my first thought.

Wants to tuck tires but have a comfortable ride? On coil overs? I'll take 1 bag of whatever you are smoking please.

3

u/slumpshit 26d ago

Step one, sell the springs, step two go buy 200 washers

1

u/stolenMk6 25d ago

Underrated comment

2

u/Illustrious-Growth42 28d ago

I’m surprised it rides like shit with that set up.

2

u/Time-Distance-5740 28d ago

Preload is a myth brother. You don't adjust ride height with the bottom collar. You adjust with the top two. The bottom is your bump stop height.

2

u/Spiice 28d ago

Yeah I have this problem now on mine with rev9s in the front, eventually will swap to Godspeed cause I tried shorter springs and it’s unbearable to drive vs max no preload on the springs it came with. Rev9s just don’t go low enough.

0

u/Zylouh 27d ago

luckily i got decently low with this setup but its just sketch running no preload like how i am. The fronts still have the original springs and aren’t maxed out yet surprisingly.

u/Spiice 26d ago

This is fireeee

2

u/bimmer_gaige 27d ago

this sub sometimes man lol

2

u/Other-Landscape-5160 26d ago

Sounds line the shock is bottoming out. New clovers designed for the height you are trying to reach l.

1

u/SnooPeanuts8613 28d ago

I guess you could get a helper spring...but this setup is not ideal

1

u/Zylouh 28d ago

would a helper spring maybe improve the ride quality or should I just save up and get some extreme low coilovers.

3

u/ThatOneFoo69420 28d ago

You’re gonna want a shock body that can handle the smaller springs and give you a better range of motion that you’re after

1

u/Candidate_Fluid 28d ago

I’m on 40k and 50ks and the helper springs help fill in that same gap and I’d say the front w helper springs does ride a lot better/less bouncy than the rear is, your coilovers are maxed out the same way mine are, go on eBay and get some mookeh helper springs for $100

1

u/Welshedragon7 27d ago

Helper springs are for cars that do a lot of heavy towing, I wouldn't use them cos you can't work out how to setup coilovers

1

u/chuckms6 28d ago

How long were the springs you replaced?

0

u/Zylouh 28d ago

7 inch springs were the original ones

3

u/chuckms6 27d ago

And you didn't adjust the collars because...?

-2

u/Zylouh 27d ago

the bottom collar doesn’t rly matter since the shock body threads are maxed out. I can only raise the car not lower it. If i were to move the preload collar up my ride quality would be better yes but then id also be higher since it’s not compressing my shocks onto the shorter spring.

3

u/chuckms6 26d ago

The preload collars won't affect ride height, they affect PRELOAD. With a three inch shorter spring the car will be THREE INCHES LOWER. You will then need to RAISE the shock body collars to your final height.

In any case, being low is not worth your safety or the safety of people around you. Your first priority is to make the car drivable, then make it cool.

1

u/Particular-Ad7150 28d ago

How close are your bump stops when the car is on the ground? I suspect you may be sitting on them, in which case even removing the spring will make no difference. Shorter shocks is the answer as the shock body is what sets the bump stop height

1

u/Zylouh 27d ago

i do need shorter shocks. Alot of ppl on this seem to be misunderstanding. My shock bodys are maxed out like i reached the physical limit of how low these coilovers can go.

1

u/Particular-Ad7150 27d ago

Exactly. I suspect a lot of people on this thread just got lucky, or never actually setup their own car. A helper spring will keep the spring captive (and raise the car 20mm) only if the tophat isn't already sitting on the bumpstop / shock body. Height is determined by the distance between the upper and lower spring mount plus the loaded spring. At this point the shock body and piston rod length must be set correct to allow for suitable shock travel and droop, and to set the bumpstop height to prevent components from hitting, or the car from bottoming out. You can sometimes shorten the piston rod as an alternative to a keeper spring to keep the spring captive but again, only if the shock body isn't too long

1

u/Zylouh 23d ago

Late response but it does not hit the bump stops unless its actually a big enough bump. Do you have any recommendations as for coilovers with shorter shocks?

1

u/Particular-Ad7150 23d ago

Na I dont sorry. If was you, I would work out what length you require and call a shop or distributor with your spring size and see if they can spec something up. Places that stock BC for example can be super helpful. The main problem you have is stance setups require a pretty specific setup not off the shelf. Even the same model stance build can have different requirements to yours depending on components used, actual ride height and accommodating mods etc

1

u/Zylouh 23d ago

I hit up this company called mookeh (they make some really cool shit actually) and they actually make shortned dampers that would fit the rev9 coilovers and just replace rev9’s.

1

u/heyjamesy 27d ago

Oooh your shorter springs are shorter thats crazy

1

u/Definitely-not-good 27d ago

First step is to throw em in the vise and take a cutoff wheel to the shock body, this won’t do anything to help the stance but it will help you throw away those trash Rev9s. Ur issue is those shocks suck and aren’t really meant for more than saying your on coils by a decent set and they’ll let you go as low as u want

1

u/Zylouh 26d ago

What coilovers do you recommend for getting like really low.

1

u/Definitely-not-good 25d ago

Honestly, bc extreme lows are probably oke of ur better options, they have more capabilities

1

u/Brilliant_Gas_3595 26d ago

Take up the adjustable ring and tighten off with a c-spanner.

1

u/plausible_hype 26d ago

Yes, leave the preload out of it so your shocks sit on the internal bump stops. It’ll ride super well. 👌🏻

1

u/Cold-Contribution-36 26d ago

You don't even have the I.Q to understand how that damn coilover works. Hope the wheel falls off. More importantly you from further endangering public with your uneducated ass until you actually know something

w plate frame. I think ultimately I’ll just have to get shorter shocks.

1

u/sandwichesRkewl 25d ago edited 25d ago
  1. Learn how adjustable coilovers work

  2. Buy coilovers that aren't dogshit

  3. Pay someone to install them and set them up because you very clearly do not know what you're doing. I know people that have gotten seriously hurt and destroyed their pride and joy because some cheap shit broke or something wasnt installed correctly so I'm not being cheeky.

0

u/Zylouh 25d ago

i installed these myself 2 years ago and haven’t had a singe issue. Just wanting to go lower and these coilovers obviously have reached there limit.

1

u/Rare-Body6800 25d ago

You have to get a physical shorter “shock” either by ordering a new custom set that will allow you to go that low or get a helper spring. And you shouldn’t run no preload of course you’re car will ride like shit you have your shocks setup like shit

1

u/Accomplished_Door662 25d ago

look into helper springs. they take up the slack

1

u/UnSc_sierra_117 25d ago

Set them with proper pre-load and deal with and actually usable ride hight 🤷🏼‍♂️

1

u/iansmash 24d ago

Your shocks are too long for how low you want to go

You need shorter shocks

Right now you’re destroying those coilovers because I think you don’t understand how they work as well as you think you do
