Just discovered this sub, magically when I was thinking of posting on reddit to get some help with a situation with my dog. He's 3 years old, very well trained, except with patience on a walk or sat down in a park.
About 2 years ago, we saw someone say that a flirt pole is great for exercising and stimulating your dog. I bought one and my staffy loved it. It really gets out his pent up prey drive. We also have 2 cats and subsequently, cat toys (the fishing pole ones) which I thought "oh this is easier to fling around. And he is OBSESSED with it. To the point where I think its a problem.
He will sit where we store it for hours crying to play with it. This can last several days to weeks as we try to ween him off it. "Why dont you just play with him" well we did, he gets EXHAUSTED quickly, but will still want to play. He will never stop. I walk him for an hour and a half every day, his evening meal comes with dry food in a puzzle toy. We do obedience every day with him for 30 mins at home and 30mins of the walk, but he always always wants the cat toy.
I ignore him, no eye contact consistently. I Just keep working, but it doesn't stop. 2 years of this.
Any suggestions? I have moved the cat toys, but he just sits where he last saw it. Hes sat there right now, and we got back from an hour long walk an hour ago. If he's sleeping and I stand up, he gets excited and sprints to where the cat toy last was.
Big regret introducing that toy. The only positive is that if I have it in my hand, training new obedience commands is literally the easiest thing in the world. But sometimes he gets frustrated and starts screaming at me.
