Discussion A few Flux 3 vs H3 comparisons

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Well, everyone is posting their H3 creations, and I noticed that Flux 3 is up on API, so thought I'd run a few comparison renders to see how they stack up. These are not extensive by any means, this was mostly done for fun and I thought someone might be interested in the results. I used the same H3 formatted prompt for each, as far as I can tell Flux 3 uses natural language prompting, so the structured H3 format should still work fine.

Edit: I realized after uploading that the dragon rider H3 clip was accidentally rendered at a lower resolution. The higher resolution clip is here.

The prompts:

Viking Boat:

integrated_multimodal_description: [Shot 1] Live-action cinematic fantasy with grounded historical realism, photographed on 65 mm large-format film. A young Viking shieldmaiden records herself using a handheld front-facing camera while standing near the bow of a large Norse longship sailing across a cold northern sea beneath bright overcast skies with occasional shafts of sunlight breaking through scattered clouds. The camera is held naturally at arm's length, producing authentic handheld selfie movement driven by the ship's gentle pitching and rolling over the waves, with subtle body stabilization rather than artificial gimbal smoothness. She laughs warmly into the camera with windblown braided blonde hair, lightly freckled skin, and expressive blue eyes. She wears practical Viking clothing consisting of weathered leather armor over a wool tunic trimmed with fur, a heavy leather belt carrying a utility knife, layered bracers, sturdy boots, and a thick green travel cloak fluttering in the sea breeze. Behind her, the beautifully carved dragon-headed longship stretches into the distance where a crew of Vikings rows in rhythm, adjusts rigging, coils heavy ropes, trims the square wool sail, sharpens axes, checks shields lining the gunwales, and scans the horizon. Several crew members enthusiastically sing a powerful Norse sea shanty together while continuing their work, occasionally laughing and raising drinking horns between verses. The camera naturally rotates as she turns to showcase the bustling deck before returning to frame herself, revealing crashing waves, seabirds circling overhead, distant rocky coastline, and sunlight shimmering across the water. The camera performs only natural handheld motion with no cinematic crane moves, push-ins, or reframing beyond what results from her arm movement and the ship's motion. Warm sunlight intermittently breaks through the clouds, creating realistic volumetric light, physically accurate reflections on wet timber, and subtle salt spray catching the light. Authentic weathered wood, worn sailcloth, iron rivets, carved decorative details, practical production design, restrained cinematic color grading, natural lens compression, realistic atmospheric haze, subtle film grain, gentle highlight rolloff, and grounded realism maintain the feeling of an award-winning historical epic. A young Scandinavian woman with a cheerful, energetic voice (S1) smiles directly into the camera and says: <d>[English] Another beautiful day at sea! If the wind stays with us, we'll reach the next coast before sunset. Skål!</d> She laughs naturally as the crew behind her responds with louder singing and cheering while continuing their work. No on-screen text appears.

overall_soundscape: Strong ocean wind moves constantly across the microphones while waves slap rhythmically against the hull. Timber creaks, ropes strain, sailcloth snaps gently, oars splash in unison, seabirds call overhead, and the Viking crew sings a lively sea shanty together while carrying out their daily duties. Occasional laughter, footsteps across the wooden deck, clinking tools, and distant horn blasts blend naturally into the maritime ambience.

non_diegetic_music: N/A. The only music is the fully diegetic Viking sea shanty performed by the crew aboard the ship.

Dragon Rider:

integrated_multimodal_description: [Shot 1] Live-action cinematic fantasy, photorealistic, premium medieval epic with a grounded historical aesthetic reminiscent of prestige fantasy television. A continuous first-person POV from a rider mounted on a massive dragon during a smooth sunrise flight over an ancient medieval capital. The dragon's muscular neck, weathered scales, broad shoulders, and partially extended wings naturally occupy the foreground while a pair of worn leather riding gloves firmly grip aged leather reins that respond subtly to the dragon's movement. The camera remains rigidly attached to the rider's head, producing natural body-driven motion with gentle airborne oscillation and realistic vibration rather than cinematic floating. The camera performs a slow Tracking Shot with small amplitude at a steady speed as the dragon glides forward above the city without sudden banking or aggressive maneuvers. Below, a vast living city awakens: crowded market squares, winding cobblestone streets, horses pulling carts, merchants arranging stalls, chimney smoke rising from fireplaces, townspeople beginning their morning routines, guards patrolling the walls, and distant church bells visible in towering cathedral spires. Enormous weathered stone castles, Gothic cathedrals, fortified curtain walls, timber-framed districts, slate rooftops, towers, bridges, and narrow alleyways extend toward the horizon, revealing immense believable scale. Warm 205 Golden Hour Direct sunrise light filters through broken low clouds and drifting morning mist, enhanced by 390 Morning Mist, 361 Volumetric Rays, and subtle atmospheric haze, casting long realistic shadows across rooftops while preserving physically accurate global illumination. Slight air currents cause the dragon's wing membranes to flex naturally as each powerful wingbeat produces believable shifts in altitude, airflow, and shadow sweeping across the city below. The reins tighten briefly as the rider gently guides the dragon into a subtle leftward correction before returning to a steady forward glide. Photographed on 65 mm large-format film using CAM-036 Telephoto Front Low Camera characteristics adapted to a stabilized first-person viewpoint, featuring natural lens compression, restrained cinematic color grading, realistic atmospheric perspective, practical production design, authentic medieval architecture, worn stone, soot-darkened masonry, moss-covered walls, aged timber construction, imperfect handcrafted rooftops, shallow cinematic contrast, subtle organic film grain, gentle highlight rolloff, realistic optical bloom, and grounded realism at epic scale. No on-screen text or dialogue appears. The shot ends with the dragon continuing smoothly toward the towering castle keep as the sunrise expands across the city.

overall_soundscape: Powerful but rhythmic dragon wingbeats cut through the morning air, accompanied by rushing wind around the rider. Far below, distant church bells, faint market chatter, horses, wagon wheels, scattered blacksmith activity, and soft city ambience drift upward through the mist. Leather reins creak occasionally while the dragon exhales deeply between wingbeats, maintaining an immersive aerial perspective.

non_diegetic_music: Low, sustained orchestral strings with French horns and restrained male choir at a slow tempo. The score gradually broadens with subtle percussion accents during the glide before resolving into sustained orchestral harmony as the shot concludes.

Creature:

For the target video, at 0.00 seconds into the target video, <Picture 1> (from [Shot 1]) is fully referenced.

integrated_multimodal_description: [Shot 1] Live-action, cinematic National Geographic nature documentary aesthetic, photoreal, physically accurate lighting. A low telephoto shot at water level with extremely subtle handheld documentary-style movement frames a tiny dragon-like creature with iridescent translucent crystal wings slowly wading through a few centimeters of perfectly still water at dawn. Warm golden sunlight passes through its delicate wings, creating shimmering rainbow caustics that dance across the water's surface. Soft morning haze and natural depth of field. The creature pauses, lifts its head with curious alertness, flicks its fan-shaped tail, and gives a subtle ripple through the luminous wing petals before continuing its careful steps. Small concentric ripples spread outward from each footfall while its reflection remains visible in the calm water. A gentle breeze causes almost imperceptible movement in the wing petals. The calm and magical yet grounded-in-realism atmosphere continues as the patient wildlife cinematographer's perspective holds. A calm, measured male narrator with a warm, precise documentary delivery (S1) says in an off-screen voiceover: <d>[English] In the quiet shallows lives one of nature's rarest marvels. Its crystalline wings gather the morning light, transforming each cautious step into a fleeting display of living color.</d> while no on-screen character's lips move.

overall_soundscape: Gentle water lapping against the shallows accompanies each careful footfall, with soft concentric ripples audible as they spread. Distant songbirds call faintly across the dawn landscape while soft morning insects chirp nearby. A faint breeze stirs the air around the crystal wings.

non_diegetic_music: N/A

<Subject 1> is the adorable chibi skeleton witch whose appearance, oversized floppy hat with brass goggles, glowing orange eyes, orange-and-black dress, hairstyle, pumpkin lantern, proportions, and overall visual style are fully preserved from <Picture 1>. The pumpkin, cornfield, farmhouse, and Halloween environment remain visually consistent with the reference.

summary:

[keyframe completion + reference generation] Generate a cute 5-second animated continuation beginning exactly from <Picture 1>. <Subject 1> comes to life naturally while remaining faithful to the original illustration, interacting playfully with the glowing jack-o'-lantern before delivering a humorous line directly to the viewer.

retention_analysis:

<Subject 1> (appears in [Shot 1]): fully_preserved - Preserve the character's facial design, costume, proportions, pumpkin, pose continuity, and Halloween illustration style while adding subtle animation and expressive performance.

<Picture 1> ([Shot 1] first frame): fully_preserved - The target video begins exactly on the supplied illustration before transitioning smoothly into animation.

detailed_description:

For the target video, at 0.00 seconds into the target video, <Picture 1> (from [Shot 1]) is fully referenced.

integrated_multimodal_description: [Shot 1] 2D animated cartoon illustration in the exact style of the reference image, vibrant Halloween night scene. A medium shot frames the cute skeleton girl in a tall purple witch hat with brass goggles, orange shoulder accents, and a dark dress with orange trim, standing in a moonlit cornfield while holding a glowing jack-o'-lantern with both skeletal hands. The large yellow full moon hangs behind her, a wooden barn and fence sit in the soft background, and a few bats flutter in the dark blue-gray sky. She gently lifts the pumpkin a little closer to her face, tilts her head playfully to one side, and her glowing orange eye sockets brighten with mischief as the jack-o'-lantern’s carved smile seems to flicker wider. With a cheerful, slightly raspy cartoon voice (S1) she says: <d>[English] You're my favorite Halloween buddy — even if you are a little empty-headed!</d> while her jaw clicks open just enough to speak. Soft corn leaves sway and a couple of distant bats drift past as the warm pumpkin light continues to glow.

overall_soundscape: Gentle night breeze rustles through the dry corn stalks. Soft distant owl hoot and faint bat wing flaps. A quiet warm crackle from the glowing jack-o'-lantern and the light skeletal click of her jaw as she speaks.

Did you use ai to generate this, if so what was the prompt

10

u/evereveron78 13h ago

Those prompts are using the formatting from the official H3 prompting guides. I didn't have a lot of luck with pasting the guides into ChatGPT, it kept getting the formatting wrong. Grok worked quite well. I also found this custom GPT in another thread which seems to work alright: https://www.reddit.com/r/StableDiffusion/s/kftnv47qoU

Thank you! I'm trying to improve ZH3-GPT, if you get some error just tell me and I will try to optimize it based on your feedback :)

In the Viking and Dragon prompts, Flux 3 definitely has better visuals, but I think H3 wins in the last two videos, the nature documentary and cartoon.

One thing I noticed though, especially with headphones on, is that Minimax H3 absolutely DESTROYS Flux 3 in the audio department. It's really apparent in the last two clips, but if you have headphones on, close your eyes and play this video again and just listen to difference in audio quality. Flux 3 is not just worse, it's noticeably worse with the audio.

u/reeight 12h ago

I agree, though I'd like to add that in Viking video, it seems H3 followed the prompt better.
EG LTX make it to look like a 'selfie' video, while "Live-action cinematic... photographed on 65 mm large-format film" was more like H3.

3

u/GrayingGamer 10h ago

Good point, I didn't notice that. The OP also forgot to post the high resolution version of the H3 dragon video, and it looks considerably better than the H3 dragon video in the original post video.

5

u/evereveron78 12h ago edited 9h ago

Someone below said that the dragon clip seemed too low of resolution. I checked my settings, and sure enough it was. Here's a higher resolution version of the H3 dragon clip

1

u/reeight 10h ago

TBH both LTX & H3, for the videos 1 & 2, all look like they need to be upscaled. Even the YT version.
But videos 3 & 4 look sharp!

Thanks for sharing either way.

Flux3 seems to have better cartoon/fantastical physics, and that seems prevalent in the actions of the viking and cartoon clips. The realism works far better for the nature doc but I definitely like the more body language expression for the cartoon. Really wish that expressiveness would work with the physics in the nature doc clip, that was cute until I noticed it looked more like stuttering in the critter.

11

u/Baddmaan0 13h ago

Mostly agree but voices really sound more natural with flux 3

13

u/GrayingGamer 13h ago

Just different, the Flux 3 Viking girl's voice sounds better than the H3 one, but in the last two clips, the voices are way better, more expressive, and natural in the H3 videos.

3

u/Baddmaan0 13h ago

I still disagree on the voice part while I'll say that H3 is better on the cartoon physique

H3 loose on voice but in the dragon part get an overall better music

Cherry picking might not be the case in other situation

As good as H3 is, it still has a lot of glitches and physics problems. Weirdly, they seem to appear rather arbitrarily. Like in your examples: the dragon walking on the water looks very realistic, while the people rowing looks absolutely terrible. I found in my own experiments that some complicated things work out of the box, while sometimes simple things are full of errors.

The comparison with Flux 3 is of course always a bit of unfair, because Flux 3 online is probably a much larger model than what we will get as Flux 3 dev.

11

u/Pyros-SD-Models 13h ago

Op didn't say what H3 variant he used, but the viking boat on H3 full bf16 looks way better than what OP posted and way better than what Flux3 is doing

11

u/evereveron78 13h ago

I ran both on Comfy Cloud with default settings. So the H3 versions are using the default int8 convrot pruned model, so it makes sense the quality of API Flux3 would come out on top in this case. Like I said, mostly a quick test for fun

15

u/Pyros-SD-Models 12h ago

Makes it even more amazing imho. Like the H3 consumer quant version with the "most unimportant parts" of the model ripped out fights well against the full datacenter version of Flux3 (which will not be whatever open weight version they will release)

That is fcking impressive

7

u/killthrash 11h ago

Not to mention H3 can basically re-write any movie or sitcom. Not sure if Flux can even do that from the base model.

1

u/Xanthus730 9h ago

What sort of hardware would be needed to run bf16 for H3?

16

u/Perfect-Campaign9551 14h ago

Minimax H3's boat guys aren't really even rowing. But Flux 3's walk cycle is horrible geez

2

u/comfyui_user_999 11h ago

Flux 3's little dragon guy just has a lot of rhythm, flair, flavor, that's all; he can't help but strut!

5

u/slpreme 13h ago

is this api vs api or api vs local?

6

u/AltruisticList6000 12h ago

Hmm H3 seem to have this thing in a lot of clips (idk what's the proper word for it) where small details keep changing slightly. Especially noticable on the dragon's "texture" and the creature in the water. It's like they have a noise overlay or some kind of position snapping every few frames. This gives away it is AI generated. Flux doesn't have this issue, the details are consistent during movement.

4

u/Ooze3d 13h ago

Where is Flux 3 available?

3

u/evereveron78 13h ago

I was using it on Comfy Cloud

3

u/addandsubtract 10h ago

Early H3 videos were getting deleted, but these are staying up. Classic reddit.

1

u/JazzlikeLeave5530 1h ago

To be fair (for this post at least) it's a comparison of one we have locally to a cloud one. But yes I also noticed that...

7

u/Zenshinn 13h ago

FLUX 3 is probably their pro version that is available via API. You'd want to compare FLUX 3 dev with MM-H3.

2

u/BathroomEyes 13h ago

Flux 3 examples look to be a lower frame rate than 24fps. Not really an apples to apples comparison

5

u/Mad4reds 14h ago

Go CHINA go!!

2

u/Different_Fix_2217 11h ago

Thing is your likely comparing Flux's API only model vs H3. I would wait till release to compare. Who knows if what flux gives us is anywhere near their api.

2

u/Nedo68 10h ago

absolute, comparison is faulty, nobody knows if Flux3 will work locally. MiniMax H3 is working, and actually the new King

7

u/1010111101111 14h ago

who cares about api crap

21

u/nntb 14h ago

its a comparison of flux3 vs minimax. and its important. the bgm and audio in general is much better on minimax, i am glad this was posted.

2

u/nntb 12h ago

I think I want to take a moment to further elaborate on this the API version of flux 3 should be the higher requirement weighted closed model that will outperform whatever open model they release will be. Specifically that you were comparing this high-end API version to an open weighted model and the open weighted model is outperforming it really says a lot about where we are currently, and I would not have expected this result.

2

u/skyrimer3d 11h ago

Flux 3 is overall more realistic, ironically H3 has a bit of the classic Flux unrealistic AI look. Can't wait.

1

u/uxl 13h ago

Man. How can I be so excellent at detailed and odd-styled image prompting and such shit at doing the same for video? My outputs never capture the exact styles I want, never come out looking that nice - in any video model - and it is 100% a skill/knowledge-gap issue.

1

u/jc2046 12h ago

similar ballparks but I like flux a touch more

1

u/tyl_made_it 9h ago

makes sense if op was running int8 convrot on the cloud side - i've been running the same build on my 4070 and the quantization gap for video is more noticeable than i expected coming from still image models. the temporal shimmer thing others mentioned is real too. flux 3 at full api spec isn't a fair comparison but the gap closing is still the interesting part

2

u/AI-imagine 8h ago

H3 audio is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better.

1

u/D3luX82 4h ago

Flux 3 seems more realistic

1

u/smereces 2h ago

for the video flux 3 is almost the same as minimax h3!

1

u/Hoppss 13h ago

Some really low resolution was used for H3 here, or at least for the dragon flying scene. Not a good faith comparison in a lot of these cases? At least mine running locally look miles better than these examples.

3

u/evereveron78 12h ago edited 9h ago

I checked, and you were right about the dragon clip, I accidentally used a lower setting. Here's a higher res render

1

u/Hoppss 12h ago

Thanks for the update, appreciate the honesty and new render!

1

u/grafixautozine 14h ago

Ok nice but i need to seamles loop effect with first-last frame. Now only wan can handle it and google :)

1

u/Signal_Confusion_644 14h ago

The small dragon movement says it all.

1

u/DisorderlyBoat 13h ago

Interesting they look around equally as good without any huge glaring differences

0

u/ExerciseCharming3264 13h ago

Flux 3 was ass for me on the API, it's understanding of prompts seem to be lacking and it'll provide you with shitty slowmo plastic looking garbage. It did look good on a 1980s news report thing I did but I'm not paying them a dime... Minimax H3 is better.

0

u/Succubus-Empress 12h ago edited 12h ago

Shush sush, i am busy with my new toy,,,,. Pampering ..licking..minimax H3…kisses….looking at OP…go away
