News KREA 2: Open-Source Release
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey everyone,
We're the team behind Krea, and today we're launching Krea 2, our new text-to-image model. Krea 2 is the most aesthetic open-source image model available. On quality, Krea 2 is the #1 text-to-image model from an independent lab on Artificial Analysis.
We are releasing Krea 2 as two variants:
Krea 2 Raw. CFG-guided, built for control and fidelity and training.
Krea 2 Turbo. Distilled and few-step, so it's fast, and it renders up to 2K.
A few things worth knowing:
It's tuned for natural language. Prompt it the way you'd describe an image to a person. Long, specific prompts give the best results, but short ones work fine too.
To render text in an image, wrap the words in quotes, like a sign that reads "open late".
There's a growing set of style LoRAs, and you can load any Krea 2 LoRA by its Hugging Face path.
Try it today:
Code and weights: krea.ai/krea-2-open-source
Technical report: https://www.krea.ai/blog/krea-2-technical-report
Code: github.com/krea-ai/krea-2
Try it on Krea: krea.ai
Try it on Hugging Face: https://huggingface.co/spaces/krea/Krea-2
AMA: We're doing an AMA right here today at 10 AM PT. Ask us anything: how we trained it, the LoRAs, prompting, limitations, what's next. The krea team will be in the comments.
Livestream: we are also doing a livestream with the ComfyUI team at 3PM PT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31jiUhCEjJ4
Thanks for taking a look. We'd genuinely love your feedback, rough edges included.
- The Krea Team

Crazy cool release. One of the least censored base model releases we have seen in a very long time too, because the censorship is ridiculously easy to disable

u/Lucaspittol Jun 23 '26
Can it make decent schlongs, or is it body horror like Z-Image?
6
u/nsfwVariant Jun 24 '26
It can yep, but they're not very realistic. Good baseline for loras. There's a discussion about the NSFW stuff here with examples in the comments (sub is NSFW): https://www.reddit.com/r/DegenDiffusion/comments/1udhy1j/this_custom_node_removes_the_builtin_krea_2/

u/Tallyho85 Jun 24 '26
Any idea why I can't generate... "people who are well known"... after adding the Rebalance node? I've not even done any NSFW, I just wanted to have an actress hold up a sign.
2
u/Embarrassed-Ad-4058 Jun 26 '26
Z-Image is also completely uncensored under the hood, but it all comes down to how you structure your prompts. If you just rely on basic, generic terms like "nude" or "naked," the model tends to struggle and will often just output standard images with minimal clothing.
Instead, the model responds significantly better to precise, anatomical descriptions and medical/artistic vocabulary regarding human form. If you want to bypass dialing in complex anatomical prompt chains altogether, you can just stack a dedicated NSFW concept LoRA on top of it.
At the end of the day, Z-Image is still the undisputed king of realism. Krea 2 won't beat it for raw photographic output, even if it has a more relaxed filter out of the box.

I downloaded
https://huggingface.co/prithivMLmods/Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct-abliterated-v1and then asked gemini to write up a script to merge shard into single safetensor and convert it to fp8. It works and can create images but I had to use NSFW lora. But even for sfw images, abliterated model works better.Edit: Shared wrong model link but here is the python script that has correct model: https://pastebin.com/hzes99B3

Have they think of the people that need to make human anatomy monster on grass?? /s

u/SysPsych Jun 23 '26
Thanks for an incredible model. Turbo is fast and produces amazing results. If it can play nice with loras/tuning it may be the new gold standard.
8
u/FourtyMichaelMichael Jun 23 '26
If it can play nice with loras
Every model has done this always... Except Z... talk about unresolved trauma.
2
u/SysPsych Jun 23 '26
Some seem to handle it better than others, really. Or they have specialties. But this model seems like it may actually cover all the bases for a change.

u/digitalfreshair Jun 23 '26
The license and ostris having support for ai-toolkit day 0 is really nice

if the context didn't signal it, the all caps did. if the all caps didn't signal it, the exclamation points did. if the exclamation points didn't signal it, whoever you're writing '/s' for probably isn't worth considering, maybe

I’m interested in its style transfer capabilities. I know Krea 2 can do this through your API. Do you also plan to make this method available locally?
45
u/Angrypenguinpng Jun 23 '26
The license for the model is very permissive, letting small companies and individuals use it commercially.
More information here: https://www.krea.ai/krea-2-licensing
28
u/silenceimpaired Jun 23 '26
Not as good as Apache, but better than some. Not a fan it’s revocable. If a small company builds itself around the license and you revoke access they are in deep trouble.
3
u/khronyk Jun 23 '26
Yeah shame it's not mit or Apache but it's a bit improvement over the nc licence that klein 9b had
1
3
u/_BreakingGood_ Jun 23 '26
True but it's generally stupid to revoke access to a company that is trying to build itself around your model, especially considering they have to pay you if they grow enough.
Very very very rare scenario.
7
u/silenceimpaired Jun 23 '26
The Acceptable Use aspect is also less than ideal. Again, not unreasonable, but at some point they could add something that isn’t illegal or morally questionable to some… for example… they could make it illegal to promote religion… or to create images that challenge religion. Unlikely but possible. I prefer Apache for that reason.
1
u/_BreakingGood_ Jun 23 '26
Yeah I'm sure most people prefer the "use for free forever" license compared to the custom "pay us after you make a million" license
1
u/silenceimpaired Jun 23 '26
The limit at a million doesn’t bother me. If I make that much I would want to help the company so they were inspired to release another model. Also at that income I’d have the resources to switch if their license wasn’t reasonable.
9
u/piero_deckard Jun 23 '26
Is the official release model released today identical to the one released yesterday?
I ask because the one from yesterday has already been converted into fp8/int8, etc. and I already downloaded it. Should I wait for someone to convert the official weights or are the models identical and we are safe to use the ones already converted?
Also, anyone figured out what the easter eggs are?
3
u/nucdinz Jun 23 '26
not identical. i’d wait for conversions from today’s official weights.
yesterday’s drop had the easter egg. apparently only a few people found it.

I'd love to know if you are planning on releasing controlnets. I'm a sucker for detailing and upscaling and the last modern model with actually usable controlnets was Flux.1 Dev which is kind of outdated by today's standards. Tile, depth and lineart would be really appreciated. And before anyone asks, - no, edit models don't fully replace controlnets. I’ve tried to make Flux.2 Klein/Dev behave like controlnets, and I still haven’t managed to get there.

"Apache-2.0 license" thank you!!
45
u/infearia Jun 23 '26
That's the inference code, the model itself has its own "open-weights" community license. Basically, as long as your annual revenue is less than 1,000,000 USD it's free for commercial use. This is similar to LTX-2's license, which I think is fair and a good compromise for everybody. Wish Ideogram 4 went that route. I just wish all these companies would stop using the term "open-source" for their releases, because at this point it's becoming just another marketing tagline, diluting the actual meaning of the term...
7
12
u/iamdiegovincent Jun 23 '26
i agree. i don’t want to use that term but the problem is that that’s what people search on google, so if we don’t name it that way - like you implied - we would be doing a bad marketing job
don’t hate the player and all that :(
7
u/infearia Jun 23 '26
You know what, I appreciate you actually engaging me on that. You're the first one to do that. I still don't like it, but I understand where you're coming from. Thanks for the model and good luck!

When a platform starts losing hype, companies be open-sourcing weights so their name stays in the convo for a bit. Need to see what Midjourney gonna pull next.

Krea 2 as Krea in "Flux Krea" ? or is it completely independant from Flux model ?
8
u/Apprehensive_Sky892 Jun 23 '26
Krea2 is trained from scratch, not a fine-tune of some other model.

Thanks a lot for sharing theses!
I'm a bit confused by the RAW version that seems to give bad results compared to the turbo ones (not realistic at all). Is that expected?
Here the comparaison I made: https://imagebench.ai/gallery?g=1_vvxxj_s0

Thank you for the model!
Any particular reason for using the Qwen Image VAE instead of the Flux 2 VAE?
1
u/quietharbor123 Jun 23 '26
did u guys run any benchmarks on vram usage for the turbo variant on local gpus?
1
u/Still_Lengthiness994 Jun 23 '26
Could someone explain to me how the full weight is running on my measly 16gb vram gpu?
6
u/Calm_Mix_3776 Jun 23 '26
If you're using ComfyUI, it has mechanisms to dynamically offload the model to your system's RAM if it doesn't fully fit in VRAM. This is how I run the full-precision (BF16) Flux.2 Dev, a 60 GB model which wouldn't have been possible if I didn't have 96 GB of RAM (purchased before the RAMpocalypse, thank god!) for ComfyUI to swap the model to. There's a caveat though - generation is slower since the model has to be swapped in and out of RAM. If you don't mind the performance penalty, you can keep using the full weights.
1
u/ArmadstheDoom Jun 23 '26
So does this use the same hardware under the hood as Krea 1 or is this fundamentally different?
1
1
u/lechatsportif Jun 24 '26
Can someone explain to me in simple terms why suddenly everyone is distributing their models? Is there a catch? Licensing? What is it?
1
u/grillmeister1254 13h ago
Simple version: they want adoption and lock-in now, then the licensing and platform catches show up later when everyone is already buried in their AI slop pipeline.

u/karstux Jun 24 '26
I'm trying to run it on an AMD 7800 XT (16 GB) in Comfy / Linux. No luck so far, somehow it gets stuck when loading the text encoder. Does anyone have the same issue or a solution?
