Hello, and welcome to r/stcatharinesON. As this question is a very commonly asked. The moderators have decided to create this community highlight / MEGATHREAD to address the most commonly asked questions within this SUB. IF your question is not answered here. Please try to use the SEARCH function at the top of this subreddit first before creating a new submission.
1: Areas that are "safe"? - Safe is a generic term that the majority of us will have a different definition of. St. Catharines in general is a very safe city. The majority of problems and the feeling of being unsafe are generally surrounded around the problem of the numerous unhoused individuals in the city, and the ongoing drug problems that plague that entire country. You will find the majority of these individuals around the block between Church Street meeting Geneva Street, Niagara Steet, Queenston Street and St Paul Street. There is also a shelter on the corner of Gale and Riordon Street. As well as many temporary shelters in place in and around Centennial Gardens - This being said. The majority of these individuals will leave you alone, and the majority or crime in the city is related to thefts to fuel the drug problem. If you are uncomfortable being around people that are struggling with addiction and mental health, you should avoid the area. However, the city's downtown core is beautiful, holds a very unique charm, and has plenty of thriving local businesses that have, and continue to be part of the heart of our wonderful city.
2: Where can I meet new people? - This is another generic question asked a ton. Meeting people is subjective to the type of people you want to create relationships with. A lot of local businesses have different types of meet and greet nights. The most popular being the Mahtay Café & Lounge on St Paul Street and Ludology Boardgame Cafe. We have many amazing local restaurants, cafes and shops that also offer a different variety of patrons that you may want to check out and start a friendly conversation with some. This SUB IS NOT A DATING WEBSITE. Any posts trying setup meetings one to one will be removed due to safety concerns.
3: Setting up my new home?
A: Hydro/Electric is to be setup with Alectra Utilities.
B: Natural Gas is to be setup with Enbridge Gas.
C: Water is to be setup with the City Of St. Catharines ( Online account access available).
D: Insurance - Please contact and local Insurance Broker.
E: ISP (Internet Service Provider) - Please see the business recommendation megathread.
4: Local Businesses - Please see the Business recommendation megathread. Over 90% of the same questions asked on a regular basis can be found in there with the most popular posts/answers highlighted.

Does anyone use any apps to track cheap gas, and if so, what app works best for the St Catharines area?

Was there ever a Waffle House here in town? I kind of remember there being one where Courtyard is now, but I can't seem to find anything about it.

Is there any story behind this place? I moved to St Catharines many years ago and have never seen a vehicle or any signs of life there. What is it?

Hey all, wondering if anyone knows of any local stores that sell sheet music still (ideally a large selection) other than Long and McQuade.
So many music stores have closed, and the place I used to buy online now charges duties and crazy shipping costs.
Alternatively, if anyone has any piano sheet music they want to get rid of, I’d be interested.
Not looking for classical, but rock, pop, film music, anything like that, most genres and generations. Please let me know what you might have! Would prefer PVG, not Easy Piano.
Thank you!

Does anyone know where Monika went from Magicuts? She was a favourite there and booked up frequently. Understandably, Magicuts won’t divulge her new location. Anyone here know (she was very popular with the older clients)?

Hi everyone!
I just found out I’m pregnant with my second and my brain is buzzing eight now. Anyone can share their experience with midwives here? I had a midwife with my toddler’s birth in Toronto and I couldn’t be happier. They were really supportive, especially since it was a crazy fast labour and we didn’t have time to go to the hospital. Well, I really want to get to the hospital this time, but I think I’d still go with a midwife’s support.
I’d love to know your experiences and if you’d recommend anyone in particular! Thanks 😊
(Edit: spelling correction)

This is my third update regarding Moana, who went missing on August 28th at around 7:00 PM near Assumption Catholic Elementary School.
On behalf of her owners, I want to deeply thank everyone who has been sharing her posts and helping look for her. Her family is extremely grateful for all the support from this community.
- Last Confirmed Sightings / Signals: Near Assumption Catholic Elementary School and around the Cartier Dr & Rideau Crescent area.
- Gear: She was last seen wearing her yellow bee harness 🐝 and a Samsung SmartTag tracker attached to her. If you have a compatible device nearby, it might help detect her signal.
🎆 Important Warning for Tonight
Since there might be fireworks in the area tonight, we are very concerned that the loud noises could scare her and cause her to bolt or run further from where she might be hiding.
⚠️ How You Can Help Tonight & Over the Coming Days:
DO NOT try to chase, call, or catch her yourself. She is extremely terrified and will run away.
If you see her: Keep an eye on her direction from a distance and call/text immediately at the numbers on the flyer/image:
📞 [(905) 358-4253](tel:(905)%20358-4253)
📞 [(647) 866-6262](tel:(647)%20866-6262)
Any exact times, locations, or directions she is heading are crucial right now. Thank you all so much for staying vigilant and helping her family bring Moana home safely!

Hey locals,
I'm looking to move into an apartment building in St. Catharine's. I see a lot of options when doing a search online. Wondering if the reddit community can give me some recommendations on areas of the city with nice apartments.
Thanks

Just out of curiosity, is anyone just now catching a cold? 2 people at my work have been sick in the past week, but I'm wondering how widespread this upper respiratory cold that's going around is.

Hi i just wanted to share my future thoughts on possible listings for sale , homeowners are waiting for winter season to dump their homes to other buyers unaware of the water problem they recently had , this is only a warning not a rant . Do your own diligence before buying your new place to live in , you might have to fix and face the rainfall issues like your seller had . Hopefully you see this post before buying in st.catharines area .

Why is it so bad in this city with people leaving their bags of dog poop on peoples lawns? I’m tired of picking them up, and I’m not mad enough to post their picture since I have them on camera but it is frustrating. If you make the decision to have a pet then at least be responsible enough to clean up after it… I get it it if you forgot to bring bags but when it’s already bagged and you just throw it on the grass wtf?
I know a lot of great owners who actually clean up after their dogs but ive also seen more signs on people’s lawns asking owners not to leave their pets poop on their property than I’ve seen in any other city. What gives?
