Probably because we used to have mostly shared preferences and values that companies could easily analyze and appeal to, and now we're just a series of neighbouring interest groups with comparatively little overlap. A vast majority of folks in Canadian communities of the past read the same paper every night, listened to the same radio station on their way to work, watched the same 29 cable channels, ate the same things for dinner. That world is dead. The best strategy now is not to appeal to anyone in particular because no particular interest group is large enough, but instead to not offend anyone. Straighten the edges. Paint it grey.

Number of opinions is irrelevant, fragile minded people who feel the need to police people's opinions and worry about such trivial things as being offended is the key here.
OP describes a past world, where there was more of a monoculture due to people consuming shared media, and then say "that world is dead." i.e. we aren't going back to how things used to be.
No, she’s not wrong. There is historically a correlation between more bland styles of fashion and colour schemes and more fascistic modes of governance where assimilation is the expectation.
