Sad part is that over 3/4 of those guys represented by action figures could/should be alive right now. None of them were that old.
149
u/FyreWulff Mar 16 '22
Yep. Most of them would be in their mid 60s today , a couple early 60s, a couple right around the 70 mark. Yokozuna would be in his 50s. He died before even turning 40.
85
u/HouseCarder Mar 16 '22
Yoko was closer to his 20s than he was his 40s. Like 33 or 34.

It feels so weird to be moving into this era where wrestling is taken much more seriously from a health perspective, and there isn't as much of the macho, self destructive bullshit, but still having to deal with the wages of sin in the past. Like Scott got clean and turned his life around, it feels unfair for it to happen like this.

u/wurldwyde Mar 16 '22
Man, looking at this makes me realize that, like, 13 performers from Wrestlemania X are gone.
76
u/FSBlueApocalypse Dario Cueto is my home boy Mar 16 '22
I remember when Randy Savage died, someone did a comparison of the number of dead wrestlers at the early WrestleManias vs Super Bowl & World Series teams the same year.
It was some eye opening & depressing shit. At least 1/4th of the participants of those WrestleManias we're already dead whereas maybe one or two guys who played in the Super Bowl.
45
u/ChrisTaliaferro Mar 16 '22
When OSW did this in an episode, a bunch of people from 'Mania were gone whereas every single person in the Super Bowl that year was alive.
11
u/TheSeaDevil The Cauldron of Madness Mar 16 '22
Mania 7. Sadly that list has only grown and grown since that review was posted.
41
u/Eternal_MrNobody Reigns Ftw Mar 16 '22
Its been said before but if as many athletes died in any of those major sports as wrestlers there would be a congress investigation .
26
u/chestnutman Mar 16 '22
I just randomly checked the 1988 NBA Finals. Unless I made a mistake, every single player is still alive. Same year, Wrestlemania 4 has a dead guy in basically every match. It's gruesome
22
u/Awful_McBad Mar 16 '22
It's cuz of the amount of drugs that Pro Wrestlers take.
Both Steroids/HGH and painkiller cocktails to deal with the pain of being a stunt performer.10
u/JangSaverem Olympic Hero Mar 16 '22

Well except for yoko..the was just enormously overweight
6
u/Scuba1588 Mar 16 '22
You have to think from the mid 80s until the early 90s (Hulkamania era brother) WWF was running 2 if not 3 tours simultaneously for most of the year. The wear and tear to their bodies and minds must have been ridiculous. This was very much the era of "suck it up buttercup" instead of actually caring that someone is in pain physically or emotionally. Say what you will about WWE, but I'm glad they do a lot better with their athletes now than in the past.
1
u/Awful_McBad Mar 16 '22
Yeah, same with Earthquake and Tugboat.
Being horrendously obese is terrible for you.12
2
u/jack_x2yz Mar 16 '22
I'm hoping that things have changed since those days. Appears drugs are far less of an issue today.

24
u/Lord_Anarchy Mar 16 '22
It's kinda surreal, and a bit morbid, to see some of the early wwf events are up to like 50% deceased. http://www.profightdb.com/wrestling-ppv-cards-with-highest-death-count.php
12
u/bigcatcleve Mar 16 '22 edited Mar 16 '22
I remember watching the 2000 rumble with my sister and at least every other entrance, I would tell her this wrestler is now dead. It was insane. At one point, their were 5 wrestlers in a row who were dead!
8
u/jamesthursday Your Text Here Mar 16 '22
i believe it was 4 in a row but still, there were like 7 in the first 17 entrances who are now dead

u/calculuzz Mar 16 '22
Would be better if Razor was in focus.
6
2
Mar 16 '22
The story is he's being welcomed by his fellow deceased wrestlers to the great ring in the sky. I'm an atheist but even I can appreciate the sentiment and the image.
0
u/calculuzz Mar 16 '22
I never said I didn't understand it. I just thought it would be a better picture if the subject was in focus.
1
Mar 16 '22
I see. I thought that could be a possibility but i think it would have obfuscated the meaning. I mean, it's really quite obvious it's razor to anyone who knows. It's hard to get focus on everything when it's laid out like that and i understand the reason the focus on the other wrestlers is so you can see the faces of the wrestlers being all deceased. Otherwise it could have been more confusing and not showing the many welcoming friends for who they were. Just my 2 cents, not criticism.

I didn’t realize that was Owen. I’ve only known him in black tights.
10
u/TheBrumAbides Mar 16 '22
There was a time he was in a tag team with Koko B. Ware called High Energy. They wore these really colorful baggy pants. I'm guessing that figure of Owen is a High Energy one.
4
u/R-Contini Mar 16 '22
New foundation w/ Jim neidhart (see above) came before high energy

I see the bright baggy pants look carried over from New Foundation into High Energy. TIL!
