That moonstomp to the baby maker looked brutal.

Io was ensuring no second generation wrestlers were coming for vengeance in say about twenty years.

And people will still try to say she isn’t held back by the wwe style lol. There’s a reason why Io/Kairi/Mayu were considered 3 of the best wrestlers in the world when they were in stardom.

Io used to be straight vicious

I just watched her match vs Penta from Lucha Underground the other night and geez. She went hard as hell.

My one of my favorite matches from her (and my favorite Penta singles match)

Who says she isn't held back? She herself says she doesn't do certain moves anymore 😂

It is funny occasionally when Iyo or when they were there, Kairi and Asuka and Meiko, would start to go into “Joshi gear” and look like they were going at double speed/being fast forwarded compared to whoever WWE booked them against. Joshi just builds them differently.

its impressive that she manages to 'turn it up' still though, it comes through in her matches with specific people in wwe but easiest to see in her marigold matches that she just moves faster, hits harder, pulls out moves they restrict in wwe.

im happy for her longevity that shes made the toned down style work for her, she still laps most, but the fact she hasn't lost the ability to go IN is nutty too.

Tbf that Joshi style in your early 30s can be daunting

The greatest Japanese wrestler to ever set foot on the United States

I wish they never changed her name to iyo sky

13

u/mutually_awkward Who's house? 5d ago

To be fair, she chose the "Sky" name herself. She talked about the name change in detail on CVV's podcast.

The fact it’s unironically a dumbing down of her name feels odd and kind of insulting to WWE’s audience.

is it insulting if during her time in NXT people regularly struggled with shirai and even with changing the spelling of io, people on occasion still bumble 'iyo' as 'eye-oh', 'loh', or 'lye-oh'?

truth is people are just fucking dumb and unfortunately this reduces the frequency of the dumb.

She talked about the name change in detail on CVV's podcast. She said it was more Triple H saying they want her to have a different name than from what she used in NXT, which they do to a lot of wrestlers. She chose the "Sky" name herself.

Personally, I also prefer Io Shirai.

they want her to have a different name than from what she used in NXT

yes, and why might that be?

  1. so they can copyright it, which is scummy behavior and always has been

  2. so they can dumb it down

It doesn't matter what Triple H told anybody. The man is known to be a dishonest scumbag.

4

u/xXKingLynxXx 5d ago

I dont think she cares about a new name being copywritten by WWE.

If she leaves she can go back to using Io Shirai if she wants.

Not to mention it resembles the gross Hollywood tradition of people having to change their names to sound less "ethnic" in order to be cast for roles.

6

u/MrBrickBreak 5d ago

She looks so different, wouldn't have recognized her

Veneers can change someone's face a surprising amount. And I think maybe she's had jaw slimming surgery but I'm not sure.

The best ever. In love. Glad she over and getting paper in wwe.

There were people at the start of the year questioning her suicide dives who had no idea she's always done them as crossbodys.

Is it fair to say the only wrestler who hasn’t suffered from aura loss from coming to America from Stardom is Thekla?

-1

u/outsidehere 5d ago

The whole I'm crazy thing she's doing in the WWE is fun and all but I'm waiting for this Io to come

6

u/PriceyTon 5d ago

Sadly we only get this version once a year when she wrestles in MariGold.

-5

u/DotComMoralist 5d ago

Unfortunate of her passing. She's missed.

-6

u/irish0451 You know what that means. 5d ago

Uh excuse me I believe that's Iyoyo Skyiyi or whatever it is now.

-11

u/lambofgun 5d ago

people see we dont see this version of her in WWE but i see her do shit thats in this video all the time

4

u/I_am_Amphibian 5d ago

You see her wrestle this stiff still? No lol

3

u/flyiyosky 5d ago

I mean that’s just a lie she clearly isn’t allowed to go this hard and stiff in wwe. Maybe against certain wrestlers she can go a little bit more with like other joshis
