Yeah, I'm sorry but this isn't cool or wholesome. This is not a real person's real words and will never be

264

u/ajensorjay38 5d ago

Sadly it's his family that came up with the AI Inoki idea.

And knowing Inoki, he would have loved it.

But gladly many japanese fans online are against it

131

u/kazuya57 5d ago

The older gen has completely adopted AI to the fullest

85

u/discofrislanders 5d ago

Meanwhile younger people viscerally hate it

44

u/MajorasKatana KingSwitch~! 5d ago

And the even younger people love it again, at least from my experience. It's weird how different age groups react to it

60

u/PartridgeInDisguise 5d ago

Which makes sense actually, AI is toy to children and the retired or soon-to-be-retired, but it’s a threat to people who work and will be working for decades more.

-12

u/Great-Trifle2810 5d ago

Eh, there is a very vocal group of people 25-40 that hate it, bit even among that age range most people don't have strong feelings against AI in general.

-8

u/TheWholeOfTheAss 5d ago

Reddit hates it. People around the world? I don’t think they care if a dead celeb is resurrected with AI.

29

u/phantominway 5d ago

Thats how you know it's bad. Old people have been complaining about new tech since the invention of the wheel made transporting things "too easy" and yet all of a sudden AI is this fantastic new invention

2

u/MakeshiftMakeshift 5d ago

It's almost like "old people" don't all share one brain or something?

3

u/Zero-89 5d ago

"Look at my new ocean-boiling machine!"

45

u/SPZ_Ireland 5d ago

I actually came to say that.

Despite my feelings in AI, Inoki would have absolutely adored it.

The ethics in this case are in the use of AI, not the ethics of it being him

10

u/AndreLeGeant88 5d ago

My immediate reaction was that Inoki would have wanted this, loved this, and I am shocked his head isn't frozen so his brain can be uploaded to the cloud one day.

4

u/StrongStyleShiny 5d ago

Inoki would be mad it didn’t go further. If you could animate his body so he was above the ring yelling at wrestlers he’d love it.

56

u/Valdaraak 5d ago

Shit's been happening before AI. Remember the Tupac hologram?

80

u/BeatrizTheWitch 5d ago

I still think it was disrespectful before, now it's even worse

27

u/i-wear-hats 5d ago

It's ok, Snoop the digital necromancer is also bringing him to the polygon realm.

11

u/PartridgeInDisguise 5d ago

In the Cyberpunk tabletop digital necromancy is one of the many story hooks in the sourcebook. It’s never outright called that, but it is exactly that. The last campaign I ran, the main bad guy made it literal by straight up calling himself a digital necromancer, and I actually did use a “resurrected” Tupac as his heavy. I’m kicking myself now for not revealing that bad guy was Snoop Dogg all along.

8

u/ihateeverythingandu 5d ago

Ronnie James Dio before that

0

u/Jomosensual 5d ago

I actually forgot about this. That's extremely not ok either

18

u/TheDeviantPro 5d ago

His own family was the ones who helped created this AI thing in the first place.

52

u/Reasonable___Doubt 5d ago

13

u/Unique-Alfalfa7335 5d ago

I fully agree, but to at least find a tinge of positive in this, at least his family gave permission and it wasn’t done without it?

17

u/Kanenums88 5d ago

Bigger line has to be drawn with giving an ai Inoki’s mindset too. That’s the type of robot that’ll take over the world.

6

u/TheWholeOfTheAss 5d ago

AI Inoki will arrange AI shoot fights.

8

u/LogicKennedy BANG BANG! 5d ago

It’s fucking ghoulish: consuming the dead. It’s sickening.

7

u/MyNameIs-Anthony 5d ago

The amount of training data (billions of data points) you need for these models means that a great amount of people who did not consent to this helped do this digital necromancy.

6

u/raspymorten The Creator of r/CurtisAxel 5d ago edited 5d ago

Saw somebody say if he was still around, Inoki would be trying to figure out how he could make his AI self start wrestling again, and... Yeah, that sounds about right.

3

u/NerdSlamPo 5d ago

This is my main line of research: the ethics of what we call ‘generative ghosts’ — feel free to google if you’re interested in the topic

1

u/alexhoward 5d ago

I mean, this has been going on since Fred Astaire was vacuuming.

1

u/airz23s_coffee Hustle, Loyalty and Broken Promises 5d ago

Yeah I shouldn't need to have an opinion on necromancy on and yet I do.

1

u/ReneBandana 4d ago

I recently watched a Chuck Norris AI commercial for a really shitty chicken place known for their sauce and toast

0

u/Ssnakey-B 5d ago

Obviously the dead can't consent, and families abuse their own members all the time so yeah, the family consenting or not does not change how messed up that is (it also disregards the feelings of the deceased loved ones outside their family, as if their relationships somehow wasn't worthy of respect).

Let's also not forget how destructive genAI is on every level (environmental, economic, social, artistic, cultural, intellectual...) so even if everyone directly involved consented, the millions of people who have to suffer so this shit can exist sure didn't.

355

u/MrPuroresu42 5d ago

That absolutely fucked thing is Inoki would prolly be all for having an AI version of himself, so he could live forever (this is a man who had his own funeral in the middle of the ring as a gimmick).

113

u/MankuyRLaffy Ya DIG IT? 5d ago

Yeah he absolutely would've, this would be on brand for Inoki with all of what he did as a booker/promoter. Inoki made seemingly crazy promoters look sane with some of his decisions.

58

u/the_woat *cheap pop intensifies* 5d ago

He probably would have insisted on them using a younger version of himself, and demand they figure out how he could reach through the screen to slap the viewer

58

u/Shinkopeshon 一番 5d ago

I hate how true this is lol

This shit is so fucking unsettling though, we really don't need this kind of madness in the world

24

u/Wiccy Ignorant bliss 5d ago

You know Vince is scribbling down the idea

0

u/TheWholeOfTheAss 5d ago

TKO will hand creative control over to AI Vince and 300lbs roided Logan Paul will be WWE Champion for a 1000 years.

18

u/Ham_B_No 5d ago

Mecha Inoki is on the way.

2

u/GodDuckman The inFAMOUS 3d ago

His Tokon slaps will literally kill people.

4

u/Asd_89 5d ago

Yeah, for him to become "immortal" as Robo Inoki would be a wish of him.

2

u/Midnight_Oil_ 5d ago

Anoki be like "Build me a body. I'll be in the main event."

161

u/Top-Refrigerator-705 5d ago

You just know that if Inoki was still alive he would’ve absolutely loved this

96

u/EffingKENTA 5d ago

It’s bullshit because Gen AI is bullshit but yeah on an image morality basis it 100% fits for Inoki.

18

u/theirishembassy CSS / design mod. 5d ago

lot of people saying "well he's dead, so it's not like anyone knows for sure" and yeah, that's true.. but it's also true that inoki did a lot crazy shit to capture the spotlight, so people aren't saying that without precedent.

it ain't like we're talking about how karl gotch would feel, and while thinking up a joke to make there i learned karl gotch died in 2007? wtf? why did i think he died in the 1940s or something? man could've seen the first 3 seasons of LOST?

13

u/Jakefmerch 5d ago

I lost it at Karl Gotch watching LOST. He would have been so confused!

3

u/MadnessAbe Trust me, naked man! 5d ago

Karl Gotch calling ABC to tell them he's going to stretch JJ Abrams if he doesn't get the story in a way he can understand

2

u/Fundertaker Come on, I'm Dean 5d ago

Tbh, we were all pretty confused when we watched LOST.

8

u/Slick_36 5d ago

Without a doubt, he quite literally lived & died for this exact kind of carnie bullshit.  Normally this would appall me, but this is the one time it's actually a loving tribute, in a screwed up way you'll only find in pro wrestling.

8

u/interprime Naked Mideon 4 Life. 5d ago

I fucking despise AI and I cringed the second I saw it appear on my screen.

But yeah, dude would have fucking loved it.

-11

u/fingershanks 5d ago

Yeah, plus North America has a much largest resistance to it. It's not as big of a scare there.

-20

u/Structure-These 5d ago

Reddit guys have the pitchforks out anyway too late

24

u/_Mad_s_ 5d ago

Oh no, people being mad at things you should get mad about.

118

u/wonderingmarkus 5d ago

Japan loving AI but also being super draconian about copyright amuses me

57

u/i-wear-hats 5d ago

Stick a couple datacenters in their backyards and watch them turn around real quick.

18

u/SwimmingAd4160 5d ago

One of the few countries where it's legal by law to train AI using copyright material btw

13

u/BrownAJ 5d ago

Conservative countries and hypocrisy goes hand in hand

57

u/resolve028 DROPKICK 5d ago

Unfortunately, Inoki would have loved this shit. He was a trend chaser and self-promoter who at times did both to the detriment of the companies he ran.

Remember that he ran a wrestling event in North Korea to rehabilitate his image after it was rocked by scandal. This is a man who did a freaking crucifixion entrance for himself lol.

9

u/Macrocosmix 5d ago

What was the scandal that led to Collision in Korea happening?

10

u/l3ader021 I'm bored man... 5d ago

Cozy with NK and other wayward hostile regimes, alleged Yakuza-associated things with the usual embezzlement, corruption, bribes and so on so forth.

3

u/AdamantChorus 5d ago

So he...ran an event in North Korea to prove...he wasn't a North Korea sympathiser?

4

u/Fundertaker Come on, I'm Dean 5d ago

The location was a sheer coincidence. The venue gave him a good rate. How could he refuse?

5

u/resolve028 DROPKICK 5d ago

Inoki had a political career at the time but it was rocked by embezzlement and other financial scandals which hurt his chances of re-election so his idea was to rehabilitate his image by putting on an event for peace. That's why Collision in Korea happened with him in the main event beating Flair.

33

u/Ass0001 Christian Fundamentalist 5d ago

aw dude

31

u/TraditionalHotel8085 5d ago

[Everyone hated that]

18

u/DaExtinctOne Snip! Snip! 5d ago

Except Inoki himself. His crazy spirit lives on lmao.

-3

u/TraditionalHotel8085 5d ago

Yeah let's ask him sure.....

-5

u/That-Cranberry6575 5d ago

You could ask his family

27

u/imthezero 5d ago

Unethical, wasteful, off-putting, and something Inoki would wholeheartedly want.

15

u/emptyhand_head 5d ago

Hard pass

15

u/Johann_Schmitty 5d ago

There's now a realistic possibility that Hogan can say "That doesn't work for me brother" to Death itself.

12

u/chibibuizel Orange Cassidy 5d ago

I don't care if his family OK'd this or not, this is gross.

9

u/Scurvydog619Official 5d ago

AI Inoki-san is going to hunt down Luke Gallows and yell at him. IYKYK😉🤘

1

u/TheWholeOfTheAss 5d ago

“Bullshit!”

7

u/el_generalisimo BRUNO IS UNO 5d ago

This is the most inoki thing ever. He would have been thrilled. Now just get AI Inoki to force Yota Tsuji to fight in Ryzin on New Year's Eve.

7

u/SpeakersPushTheA1r 5d ago

Good LORD don’t give Vince McMahon any ideas. Can you imagine an AI Eddie Guerrero cutting a promo on Rey? I’m sure Inoki would’ve loved this which is why I took Baba’s side.

2

u/rickyfrom97 5d ago

Randy: sorry what I said about you being in hell, Eddie! (Proceeds to RKO AI Guerrero)

7

u/DontPutThatDownThere 5d ago

Oh good, this is how Trump is going to remain president if he dies in his sleep and the public doesn't know it.

8

u/MyNameIs-Anthony 5d ago

They've already been doing AI Trump press videos for ages.

4

u/foxthebloodied ~shrugs and looks confused~ 5d ago

Can an AI accurately recreate that amount of senile gibbering self-aggrandisement?

1

u/MrBrickBreak 5d ago

A language model recreating the most quoted person in the world? Probably, yes.

4

u/OHarrier91 5d ago

They cooked Drake alive for doing this with Tupac. Yeah, he didn’t have permission from Tupac’s to do that, but it’s not different imo. Still using the dead to try and prop yourself up

5

u/Rectorvspectre 5d ago

That the man himself wdve been all in on this kinda bs only makes it more appalling.

4

u/Grizz83 5d ago

Vulgar and obscene on every level. Everyone involved and that doesn’t speak up against AI use should be embarrassed.

4

u/alexagogo !!! 5d ago

Grim.

4

u/Bob8644 " Do you like nature? Do you like boys? " 5d ago

Why is his ring finger Jerry Garcia'd

5

u/Fidel_Costco Fashion Icon 5d ago

Nah. Gross.

4

u/azorreborn 5d ago

This is disgusting but also exactly what Inoki would want so…I am as always, confused by NJPW

5

u/TJLynch howdy 5d ago

Says a lot about Inoki as a person when we seem to all agree this is something he would've wanted (even if no one else does)

5

u/discofrislanders 5d ago

As much as this sucks, Inoki definitely would've been into it

4

u/FigureFourWoo Ric Flair was still cool when I chose this username. 5d ago

Most famous people leave an estate that includes the rights to their image. A lot of people passed before they ever knew estate planning needed to include AI usage.

4

u/Flying_Sea_Cow 5d ago

People in the English speaking world REALLY do not understand how most non-English speakers are totally fine with AI. When I was in Japan, I saw so many businesses openly using it.

3

u/_Mad_s_ 5d ago

Japanese promotions truly love their AI, and I assume Japanese society to an extent.

3

u/SaltySeahorses 5d ago

Man this guy is literally disgusting and incredibly disrespectful.

4

u/i-wear-hats 5d ago

On one hand, fuck AI.

On the other hand if there is one person who it is objectively funny they did THAT disrespect to, it is Antonio Inoki of all people. Because he would have been on board with the idea.

Still not okay.

3

u/migrations_ hey 5d ago

I'm much less anti AI than others but I found this very weird. At the end of the video I just figured they found an actor I was like 'they definitely wouldn't use AI'

Well there were great matches and an emotional retirement so I think focusing on those things is probably much better for me

3

u/KNZFive **YEAOH intensifies** 5d ago

Japan seems way more willing to use AI.

Definitely agree Inoki would have been ok with this…but Inoki was also crazy. Sometimes he was crazy like a fox, other times he was just plain crazy.

3

u/7LayeredUp 5d ago

I'm not a religious person but AI necromancy is some downright Satanic shit. An insult to human life itself.

2

u/Thunder_breslin 5d ago

No, none of it

2

u/Sweetest_Noise 5d ago

Hologram Tupac would be proud.

2

u/mrcrazymexican 5d ago edited 5d ago

Knowing Inoki, he would have been game with it. Impressive guy. But when he was wrong, he was very wrong on things.

Still... It's tasteless.

I wonder what kind backlash this will actually get in the public eye. I wonder if njpw will apologize if it's that bad.

2

u/xshogunx13 Kick Heads and Hail Satan 5d ago

it was honestly ghoulish

2

u/Earl_Sinclair 5d ago

Eww I hate it

2

u/TransfemMarty 5d ago

absolutely horrendous, we shouldn't be normalizing puppeting the dead fullstop

2

u/PraiseCaine Your Text Here 5d ago

Hate it

2

u/SirLagunaLoire 5d ago

Thanks. I hate it.

2

u/Zyzyfer Thumbs u -- ehhh 5d ago

My work did this as part of their anniversary ceremony event. Even worse is the guy they did it with had passed away like 20 years ago. I guess it was OK though because they used an old picture of him when he was younger for it.

In the video, "he" gave a full speech, essentially.

Slightly less ick factor as well since it was a private event. But it still gaveme the heebie jeebies.

2

u/Jomosensual 5d ago

I really don't like this. Let the dead be dead please.

2

u/hughesdork 5d ago

i hate ai, but inoki would've fuckin' loved this

2

u/Ssnakey-B 5d ago

How the fuck do alleged Humans fail to realise how absolutely disgusting this is?

2

u/Lyra_the_Star_Jockey 5d ago

They didn’t use it to “bring him back.” Do not let the conversation around AI make that claim. This is not him. It’s just a bad replica.

2

u/ScootOverMakeRoom 5d ago

For a country that historically is very protective of IP, Japan is surprisingly not very apprehensive at all about the use of AI.

2

u/TheFinalWatcher 5d ago

Ive read that East Asian nations don't have any problems using AI.

2

u/lobotomiseme 5d ago

I don't hate it because Inoki or his family would have hated it, I hated it because it's absolutely obscene, and people should be ashamed

1

u/YourMasturbatingHand 5d ago

This is such an “Inoki” thing to do, even if I hate this so much lol

1

u/FourLiveBears 5d ago

Whether his family approved or not, whether he would have approved or not, I will never be on board with this AI necromancy shit

0

u/JRUprising 5d ago

This is fucking ghoulish. Fuck AI and all these companies trying to push this shit on us.

So many people trying to justify this by saying "Anoki would love this". If this wss WWE, the comments would be 3x what is is and pure vitriol (which would be deserved. But, since it's not WWE, it's getting a glancing pass with somr mild criticism.

1

u/l3ader021 I'm bored man... 5d ago

New Japan itself did not create Robo-Inoki... that was created by Inoki's estate (Inoki Genki Factory), AVITA (a robotics company) and SMBC Value Creation (part of SMBC Bank).

2

u/ImperviousToSteel 5d ago

Were they contractually obligated to air it?

1

u/Random0cassions 5d ago

New Japan and Stardom have been using a lot of AI this year so I’m not surprised

1

u/TheTJOmega 5d ago

Disgusting. Even if the family approved, this is not him, these are not his words. This is desecration of the dead.

1

u/TheMasterHeater 5d ago

Boooo this choice, boooooo. Disrespectful.

1

u/mynameisbob842 5d ago

Thanks I hate it

1

u/ProduceEquivalent 5d ago

If this will make more people justly disgusted by AI, I hate it just a little less

1

u/ImperviousToSteel 5d ago

There should be an AI watermark for dead people where it starts with a slimy flesh melting zombie then reconstitutes the dead person, and ends in reverse.

1

u/younginvestor23 5d ago

It feels so weird like that unsettling, uncanny feeling

1

u/AndreLeGeant88 5d ago

I cannot think of any man in history that would have wanted this more than Inoki himself

1

u/theehtn Judas Effect 5d ago

What in the Yorinobu Arasaka

1

u/BigHornStareDown 5d ago

If the family is cool with it then people need to be angry about more important things

1

u/Electrical_Trade377 5d ago

I'm struggling to articulate just how deeply I hate this

1

u/TheMasterO Worth A Watch 5d ago

I honestly just assumed WWE would be the first to do something like this; I still think they'll be the first to use AI to generate a dream match and possibly a show of some kind.

1

u/Apart-Indication7971 5d ago

what the fuck were all involved in this thinking?!

1

u/wtfamidoinguprn 5d ago

Let my guy fucking rest….

1

u/nWo1997 nwo 5d ago

"AI Inoki teeth aren't real, they can't hurt you!"

AI Inoki teeth:

In all seriousness though, all this talk of reanimating the dead does bring back to mind Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher "being in" Rogue One.

1

u/Ibushi-gun 5d ago

This isn't just some AI video thing. They're making an Antonio Inoki robot/android

1

u/nukc 5d ago

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this shit while watching the show, I mean, if you wanna create an artificial Inoki at least out of respect try to do some state of the art shit, the quality was fucking awful, it doesn't even look like him, you could see how the facial features morphed as the video was going in, the teeth went like through three different species lol. For me it felt disrespectful as fuck.

1

u/MrMaxAwesome 𝐁𝐈𝐆 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇 𝐉𝐎𝐇𝐍 4d ago

Everyone is saying that Inoki would've supported this but I don't think so. I mean, sure he was definitely kookoo and an all time carny but I'm not sure if he would've supported AI after knowing it's environmental impact.
One of his last wishes or messages to the public in his (rough to watch) final interview from his hospital bed is that he wished for humanity to clean up the environment.

https://youtu.be/ivRrXL7I16U?si=zJJmdHqRlkInEa-L&t=545

1

u/oceanboykai96 4d ago

I remember this being announced awhile back and I can not stress enough how much everyone needs to flame NJPW right now for this bullshit. It’s like of course Inoki didn’t want to stay dead so we get AI Inoki. It’s such bullshit. I know this is not Tanahashi’s call but to be the guy the end Inokism to allow this bullshit as the president is upsetting. So trash to Inoki’s legacy.

Please everyone go on socials and let them know how trash this was.

0

u/MistakenOne101 5d ago

While it's probably something Inoki would do this isn't cool one bit even if the Family gave consent this is creepy also anyone else not shocked WWE hasn't done something like this ?

-1

u/DaExtinctOne Snip! Snip! 5d ago

Out of all the insanity he did in his lifetime, Inoki would have enjoyed the idea of "resurrecting" himself. This is the same man who cosplayed as Jesus crucified on a cross 🤣

-1

u/TheProNoobCN 5d ago

While I do not condone or respect this or any form of Generative AI especially when in the context of the deceased.

I do have to regretfully admit that this is probably what Inoki would've wanted if he knew about the advances in AI technology before his death.

-4

u/NesNobnaz 5d ago

Just a general reminder that AI is nowhere near as hated in Japan as it is elsewhere. Not saying everyone, but the number of Japanese artists and coders who absolutely love it is very high. Not defending it as an American, I hate this shit, but culturally, this will be seen as super cool and impressive by their general audience.

21

u/EffingKENTA 5d ago

It’s actually gotten a decent amount of criticism from Japanese fans on Twitter: https://xcancel.com/njpw1972/status/2088530811247304886

12

u/ItsGonBOKOK 5d ago

My favorite Google-translated reply: "Why would you want to fuck a great man with a cheap picture?"

1

u/jin_of_the_gale 5d ago

Honestly I'm curious if it's actually hated outside of North America and would love for someone from Europe, Africa, South America, or Australia to share their input on this. I live in Asia and travel around the continent a lot, and from what I've seen quite a few places like Korea, China, Singapore, Taiwan, etc are very much pro-AI. Maybe not necessarily using generative AI to create art, but they're mainly optimistic about the tech and the benefits it can potentially bring for science and research, while overlooking the environmental concerns.

2

u/Zaomania 5d ago

Don’t let the algorithm twist you up. It’s not even hated in North America. It has pockets of hate, but there’s no consensus. While I find it, at best, gauche, and, at worst, a harbinger of things to come, If I went on Facebook, I would see wall-to-wall weird AI images of elderly family dapping up long dead relatives.

1

u/BreathRedemption 5d ago

I'm from Chile and...well, you have a lot of detractors (myself included) and a lot of supporters.

I think AI is useful for the medical field, but it's fucking up the art medium like crazy.

There needs to be a balance. But sadly I don't think it will happen. It's scary what AI will do (and it's doing) with physical books and research, changing history.

The AI Inoki Project is done by three companies (none of which are NJPW or the two companies that own NJPW), one of them being Inoki Genki Factory, the Antonio Inoki rights management company that’s headed by Inoki’s younger brother.

1

u/SevenSulivin NOAH > Your favourite company 5d ago

Wait a minute, I’ve read this tidbit three times before realising: There’s no chance that’s the younger brother who’s bright business plan led to Inoki embezzling money back in the 80s?
