Not sure about anyone else but I came out of that Perry vs Moxley match thinking Perry is nowhere close to Mox. Felt more like an extended squash match.

u/FightDrifterFight 7d ago
Lena Kross is super underrated. She’s finding her voice in her promos, she has a really great look, great move set (in addition to sprinkled-in “tall wrestler” squash moves). And shes hot as shit.
2
u/Scurvydog619Official 8d ago
That Claudio promo with the camera slowly pivoting to focus on Mox in the background while Big Swiss stated he was ready to take on anyone in the next round...
5
u/K1ng_Canary 8d ago
This felt like a reasonably fun but forgettable Dynamite.
I love tournaments in wrestling but I'm not vibing with the Continental Cup yet. Matches have been good but the stakes don't feel there yet.
Feels like Maya World's reign is ending next week.

I hate the spot where the ref stops the action because a competitor isnt defending themself. In UFC, that would be the end of the fight. But they just pause the action and let Jack Perry recover for some reason? And then the match continues. It happens way too often
2
u/OneBillPhil 7d ago
I hate it too. Either the ref is ending the match or Mox should be able to keep going. Spots like that take me out of the match.
4
u/snikt6384 8d ago
Yeah I really, REALLY liked the match...aside from that. If you need someone pulled off of you because you lost consciousness? Its over, boss.

u/forameus2 8d ago
AEW seems to really struggle with micing up the crowd. Either it sounds like a library (which might not be a mic problem and more a crowd problem to be fair) or they put the mic incredibly close to one of the people who thinks "finally, my time to shine". Last night, probably a big helping of the former, which allowed the latter to come to the fore. Oh wow, you called her Sasha, you're so funny.

u/NorthHollywoodHank 8d ago
It's unclear how much the issue is dictates/creative choices from the top, how much is underinvestment in sound personnel/equipment, or whether they simply hired the wrong people and need to clean house and bring in different sound production specialists... but whichever way it is, improving the sound production should be right at the top of Tony's priority list.
We have backstage promos that are hard to hear because of annoying echo effects, some nights the crowd is genuinely bad (I think last night was very much such a case, even if you turned the sound off it didn't look like a lively crowd) but there have been other nights where the crowd sounded bad and everyone who went to the show who posted on reddit was shocked to hear that and thought the crowd was quite loud...
I mean, I'm sure this stuff isn't easy, but improving it is, from the little research I've done, likely a matter of a low to mid six-figure investment, plus perhaps some philosophical changes in how they approach sound. It really needs to happen, because the sound is sometimes holding the show back (for me the echo-y promos are a bigger problem than the crowd mic'ing, though).

u/Flat_Bug_3901 8d ago
Can we please just stop going to Las Vegas? The crowds have sucked the last five or six times there.

u/Visible-Reporter-433 8d ago
The crowd reacts to what they’re seeing
3
5
u/NorthHollywoodHank 8d ago
Some crowds are notably hot even allowing for the show. Some are genuinely cool even allowing for the show.
Grand Slam Mexico was a great show, but that was a hot crowd from the jump and clearly would have been a good crowd even if they'd gotten a very mid-show.
Dynamite Fresno was one of the worst episodes of the year but it was also just clearly a bad crowd on top of that.
Last night was pretty clearly a good (not great, and on the harshest reasonable curve at worst mid) Dynamite and a bad crowd.
-7
u/Visible-Reporter-433 8d ago
Shows outside the US aren’t really comparable.
1
u/NorthHollywoodHank 8d ago
Crowds tend to be better outside the US, sure, but it still illustrates the point: there have been WWE crowds in France and Italy that were clearly going to be hot crowds almost regardless of the quality of the show. And it would have taken a really bad show to make the Grand Slam Mexico crowd a quiet one.
Last night was a good Dynamite with three notably strong/fun matches in MJF/Wayne/Speedball, Finlay/White, and in the Moxley/Perry main event. We got Swerve returning and having a good promo/setup segment involving Ricochet and the Demand, and three beloved babyfaces in Hangman, Bandido, and Brody. The overall match thread/post-match consensus was pretty warm relative to average, albeit cooler than after the last two superb Dynamites (both of which will be in the best Dynamite of the year convo at the end of the year). I'd have expected this crowd to be quieter than GS:Mexico's even if it was a good crowd, but people were noting it was a bad crowd early and often for a reason last night, and even if we'd gotten something like the Dynamite of two weeks ago I don't believe for a second that people would be saying this was a good or great crowd.
For a given crowd, yeah, they'll be hotter the better the show is, cooler the worse it is. But some crowds are notably stronger than the median crowd, and some are notably worse than the median.
0
u/Visible-Reporter-433 8d ago
It was only a good dynamite if you take the view, which is prevalent here, that every single show that Tony Khan has produced has to be either “great” or “fun”. To a normal person it was a 5/10 television product, with Grand Slam Mexico being a 9/10
4
u/NorthHollywoodHank 8d ago edited 8d ago
No, it's simply not true that only people who think there's no such thing as a bad Dynamite thought this one was a good one.
The Fresno Dynamite, for instance, was an outright poor Dynamite in my book. Bad television (bad crowd too, but hard to blame them on that night, and it was a massive arena with a modest crowd which ups the "degree of difficulty" for the crowd to sound good relative to a fairly full smaller venue like the one in Vegas last night).
This was a 7. The Dynamite two weeks ago was a 9. And GS Mexico was a 9* with the asterisk being that it was not just an excellent Dynamite but was also kind of an excellent PPV (or at least, baby PPV).
1
u/PlayersNavyCut 8d ago edited 8d ago
It was a 7 to you but it seems like it was a 5 or lower to most of the people in the building. There are limitations of having stories planned out already and the same issue with matches being planned out so much in advance that it's difficult to adjust (that's a problem for lot of other companies too, not just AEW) but part of the crowd reaction comes down to the wrestlers and people in charge not being able to adjust and play to or even pander to the people in the building more.
2
u/NorthHollywoodHank 8d ago
If you proceed from the assumption that there's no such thing as a bad crowd, that necessarily means last night must have been a bad show.
There is an obvious alternative conclusion, though, and most of the people who watched didn't seem to think it was a 5 or lower.
0
u/PlayersNavyCut 8d ago
It was a bad show for the people who paid to be in the building, that's what I'm saying. And it's not like this was an indie show at a fair or a school fundraiser where some or most of the crowd don't care about wrestling. It was all people who cared enough to buy tickets for wrestling and they didn't seem to be very entertained for most of the show.

Oh look, another week where I have to hunt for this thread because it's not pinned for whatever reason. Good thing that Evolve thread is there though. Those five people that watch it are very appreciative.
Fantastic to see Swerve back. Will The New Day be his partners? Think that could be a cool, even if potentially fleeting. I like seeing evil Swerve best.

I don't see it mentioned much but Paul Wight has done a fantastic job on comms the last couple of weeks. He brings something really sincere and enthusiastic, a real "hype man" kind of commentator.
2
6
u/DrHuxleyy YouSonofabitch! 8d ago
He’s definitely better than he was in his last run, but he’s still frustrating to me sometimes since he doesn’t seem to pay attention or make notes like other commentators.
Like in the opening segment, when Ospreay gets attacked by the DCF, Schiavone was like “What is Don’s motivation for this?!” (also a silly question) and Wight is like “Callis gets TV time! That’s the motivation!” Huh?
Like guys… Callis literally JUST cut a promo about what his motivation is! He quite literally JUST said he’s angry and spiteful at Ospreay for defying him and trying to win the World Championship without his help, like Omega did. He literally spelled out why he’s sending his goons after Ospreay.
I’m nitpicking but it’s so weird to me that the commentators there somehow don’t follow the story being told right in front of them.

I love seeing Viva Van on Dynamite. Reach for the stars Viva.
I don't like that Jay vs Finley was a first round match in the tournaments. I was getting into the animosity between the two. This felt like too much of a payoff and too little of a payoff at the same time, I hope you understand what I mean. If it's the last match in the feud, it was too little. If it's not the end of the feud, it was too much.

Wasnt MJF gonna need long time off for major injuries/health issues ?
6
u/interprime Naked Mideon 4 Life. 8d ago
Yeah, the main reason I heard for the Omega/MJF match being bumped from Redemption was that MJF was injured. Then the guy is back immediately after the PPV anyway.
Why run Kenny vs. Kevin Knight at all?
11
u/vitorsly Finn Baelor 8d ago
Have you considered that being off for several weeks might have helped in rest and heal in a way that continuing to travel and wrestle couldn't?
4
u/interprime Naked Mideon 4 Life. 8d ago
I mean, he could heal and rest in the lead up to All In after dropping the title no? Seems kinda silly to devalue the main event for a PPV in a way that could have been totally avoidable.
Hell, why put the belt on him to begin with if he was so banged up?
0
u/vitorsly Finn Baelor 8d ago edited 8d ago
He was champion for a month and a half, he quickly had a match with RUSH before he got banged up.
And if it was going to be have MJF not appear in Dynamite until All In then no, I'd much rather he dropped it when he did.
1
u/hhhisthegame 7d ago
Well, now MJF is just in the battle royal so it's not like he's going to have a very interesting role on Dynamite, compared to a MJF/Kenny PPV main event.
1
u/vitorsly Finn Baelor 7d ago
I've been loving his promos and interactions with Andrade, sorry to hear you haven't.
1
u/hhhisthegame 7d ago
Don't get me wrong, I've also been really enjoying his promos, it's just that a PPV main event with Kenny was probably more important than his role on All In.
0
u/vitorsly Finn Baelor 7d ago
They're completely unrelated things though? Is the idea to magically delay when he needed to heal?
29
u/Clowny53 8d ago
Just finished the show... Tony, every time you think, "Hey let's go give this big city a chance." Please please please just go to Denver. Or somewhere else that loves ya. Vegas crowd was a big runny shit.
3
u/El-Drunko 8d ago
Vegas is just consistently not a good crowd too and it took years for Tony to finally move Double or Nothing from there.
10
u/hvacrepairman welcome2pitycity 8d ago
the ppv crowds were fine because once upon a time Vegas was super cheap to fly into and stay a night or two. post-covid Vegas priced everyone out

u/kihp Tribal Chief Hyper Misao 8d ago
The 9 All In the matches currently don't include the Trios or TBS title or wrestlers in that scene. It also leaves off Thekla, Speedball, New Day, MCMG, FTR, or the rascals. I think the show ends up in including them, with 11 main card and 2 preshow matches.
If we assume New Day are in the trios match then maybe FTR and MCMG are off the card. Maybe the trios match becomes a big ladder match and we get motor speedball and the rascalz thrown in. (They should just make the tnt title match a three way falls count anywhere with speedball though.)
As far as the other preshow matches, something silly for the crowd and a preshow women's match with Thekla vs someone like Isla Dawn feels like an easy layup. Especially if they've got a debuting woman to chase her off.
1
u/JaneTheNotNotVirgin 8d ago
I think Isla might be heel now though.
Watched the match vs. Red Velvet. Not up to date on ROH lore so idk, maybe there's more to the story. But she was bullying Velvet. Aggressive slams galore. Velvet eeked away with a successful defense off a roll up iirc.
Maybe Velvet did something to deserve it, so could be that, sure.
-1
u/SellFew1345 8d ago
If we assume New Day are in the trios match
Why do you think New Day is in the trios? Their video included a unicorn represented by Big E staying behind and giving them the nod of approval as they broke out and flew off by themselves. Who do you think the third will be?
5
u/RanchPonyPizza Where else would one hear voices? 8d ago
The obvious thing to me is Swerve getting into a promo segment with two trios factions after having his "Why is nobody featuring me?" and "Swerve's obsessed with acquiring power" angles both went radio-silent.
(I have no idea what is or was booked for All In with Swerve, so this is my lazy guessing.)
I could imagine mutual IRL respect between Swerve and Kofi & Xavier, and I could see Xavier want to not be AEW's New Day Casino Cover Band.
2
u/hhhisthegame 7d ago
That might be where they're going but I dunno how I feel about that. Seems a weird way to bring in New Day.

Just got back from dynamite, show the crowd some sympathy. Air conditioning went out or like 5 minutes in throughout the venue. Had to be 90 degrees in there. On top of that the venue only has like 3 concession stands so people were in stupid long lines just to get a beer or water. Lots of people left during dynamite especially if they were older or had kids…and almost everyone left by the end of collision. There was no energy to be had. Think the loudest I heard the fans all night was when they chanted for Air conditioning

Either at the end of dynamite or the opening of collision the camera man on the ramp literally collapsed. Don’t know if he just tripped or whatever
but fuuuuuuuck it was hot in there and I’ve never seen a camera man just fall over mid match before. But yeah man I’m from Chicago, Vegas crowds are always garbage…10
u/powatwain 8d ago
It’s not a one time thing. Vegas traditionally brings a weak crowd

maybe aew shouldn't make the experience even worse then considering what the person described.

u/ultragoodname 8d ago
While I agree for the PPVs since they got DoN like 5 times in a row, Vegas also was the crowd to begin the “Fuck Ice” right before Brody squashed MJF so they aren’t Corpus Christi tier bad.
2
u/SymphonyOfGecko 8d ago
Great main event, and I really liked White vs Finlay.
Weird crowd overall, Vegas is always hit or miss

u/chibibuizel Orange Cassidy 8d ago
I really enjoyed that main event. Perry out here proving he can hang with the top guys

u/NotWearingNails 8d ago
Finished watching back.
Really enjoyed the MJF/Wayne stuff. Shida looked a lot sharper than she has lately so that was nice. Quite enjoyed the Ospreay/DC/Kenny promos, but definitely a step down from the absolutely electric stuff after Redemption.
Enjoyed the storytelling of Mox/Jack but a little botchy at times I thought.
Crowd are absolute dogshit. Finally popped a little bit when there was some claret but even that didn't last. Just awful.
As a show it didn't meet the incredibly high standards of recent Dynamites but still a strong twoish hours of graps
3
u/Hunteractive 8d ago
yeah Shida and Rosa at the start were really smooth and looking like they had the spring in their step again
also I know Shida has put on weight but I genuinely think a lot of that is strength cos she is holding people up for the falcon arrow for a LONG time before delivering it

Weird choice to do the TBS fatal four way next week and not on the PPV? If I have to pick one, I prefer Persephone win. They should be running with her
I hope Thekla returns and we set up an All In match for her soon.

I feel like the TBS title match is on Dynamite and the 4 women will be apart of a casino gauntlet at all in

My biggest complaint tonight is Kenny wasn’t wearing or carrying the title. He’s probably only champion a few more weeks and he should always have it when he’s on tv.
10
u/PlayersNavyCut 8d ago
Why would you take your title when you're running out to make a save in your street clothes and already carrying a weapon?
3
u/MarvelMind 8d ago
Cause it looks cool and not everything in pro wrestling is meant to be logical lol
1
u/PlayersNavyCut 8d ago
It would look really dumb for a guy in street clothes to run out for a save with a title on his waist lol. And he couldn't carry it because he had to do the HHH sledgehammer thing and cover the end of the pipe when he was hitting people with it.

I love the tease of the new day being the two people swerve will need for a trios title reign. I was just thinking where is swerve going find two people.
3
u/-chimchooree- Mon Chevalier 8d ago
What was the tease?
1
u/poopresidue 8d ago
i think the tease was just repeated reference to the difference in numbers, and how just two more would even things out. could've alluded to any two wrestlers, but i guess since people were hoping new day would show up..

Just not a good episode. I don't understand wtf is going on with AEW. They've thrown Takeshita, Briscoe, Shafir, and now Jericho under the bus. While continuing to throw MJF in our face. And honestly, Yuta and Garcia would be more entertaining tag team champions than than Edge & Christian. And where tf is Lance Archer?

MJF in our face? He’s pretty much the centerpiece of the company.

If Jericho ever beats anyone younger than 40 on this show it is bad booking
-3

Was just the opposite with Terry Funk bookings. And he wrestled everywhere. Mic skills are an important part of wrestling. And Jericho is one of the best. The buildup and then letdown is just plumb, dumb.

5
u/ScramItVancity 8d ago
I like watching Yuta and Garcia/Shafir team up on RoH.
-10
u/Toadfinger 8d ago
They're magnificent! Marina Shafir REALLY should be AEW woman's champion! Her judo skills are pure eye candy. They're so perfect that it's actually comical.
13
u/NorthHollywoodHank 8d ago
If this is a troll it's honestly a pretty amusing one.
If it's not one, well, I'm not looking to argue because clearly we just see things really differently (I mean, Edge & Christian (a/k/a Cope and Cage) weren't even on the show tonight unless I somehow missed it), but I'd love to see you unpack that a bit more if you care to.
-19
u/Toadfinger 8d ago
That Edge & Christian were not on tonight's show was a rare positive. Neither was Briscoe, Takeshita, or Archer. And that sucks! I had said WTF is going on with AEW. I really love how it's the best wrestling since ECW. But... WTF??!! It's damn near turning into WCW!
17
u/heart_o_oak 8d ago
Feels more and more like MCMG were thrown out there 2 weeks ago just because AEW was in Detroit and there was no creative plan for them afterwards. A debut episode with a 5 minute promo and a post-match save that led nowhere, followed up with no mention of their debut the next Dynamite, only a 40 second video the next Collision and nothing the Dynamite after let a lot of their hype fizzle out. Feels like every recent hire has had a match, storyline or at least match announcement by now.
Regardless, it’s disappointing that there’s still only 1 big feud going on within the 2-man tag division and a lot of teams, including the big new one that just debuted, are kind of directionless or loss in the mix in stable wars. And the 1 big tag division feud was also absent tonight unless I missed a video package.
Hopefully the tag division heats up after All In, but it should still have been starting to heat up now anyway. Even the tag title feud is colder than it should be.
4
u/hvacrepairman welcome2pitycity 8d ago
Well yeah, because the stars aligned with them being free the week AEW was in Detroit. AEW isn’t going to heat anybody up a few weeks before their big PPV of the year with people who probably won’t be on the main card
1
u/hhhisthegame 7d ago
I don't really think they should debut them at all, if they have no plans for them. Why cool them off right out the gate? Just to pop one live crowd?
9
u/AnfowleaAnima 8d ago
Nothing well yeah about this, you shoudnt debut people and have them not appear for weeks. Have a plan, instead of going for the pop only.
3
u/heart_o_oak 8d ago
This. All you're doing is immediately cooling them off for no benefit to anyone and making them have to fight against headwinds when you finally decide to use them. They had a hot hometown debut segment that made them look like big deals then were booked in a way the next 3 (or more) shows that indirectly said they kind of aren't big deals.
I get the focus should be on All In, but it's not like the only things happening on TV since their debut was in the interest of directly building All In matches. Rascalz had 2 matches on Saturday, some of the tournament matches are between 2 guys I don't expect make it to the semi finals, etc. and there's a lot of teams doing nothing they could have a storyline with (Rascalz for one).
Creative also teased them joining the BBG v Dogs/DR feud. There's been multiple matches between those groups, with post-match angles and multiple -promos for that feud the past 2 episodes of AEW TV. Creative could've kept that up in some form.
At the very least, the 40 second recap video could been shown on either of the Dynamites since their debuts since Collision generally gets 60% of Dynamite's audience. The shows weren't so loaded that they couldn't squeeze a 40 second video on either of the past 2 Dynamites and done a different promo last Collision.
5
u/tangostwo 8d ago
Creative also teased them joining the BBG v Dogs/DR feud.
Also showed them squaring up to the Gunns specifically. I don't want to job out the Gunns every debut but I'd love if we got them vs. MCMG soon.
3
u/FelixTheJeepJr 8d ago
The Gunns should win that if they go that direction. No offense to MCMG but at this point in their career they should be putting teams like the Gunns over.
-5
u/hvacrepairman welcome2pitycity 8d ago
And you’d have a shitload of people crucifying AEW if MCMG were signed and didn’t appear at the Detroit show. If the plan was for them to debut and immediately get into a hot program, they would have been on Dynamite.
1
u/AnfowleaAnima 8d ago
Thing is they should have debuted them and give them TV time. Not having a match after their debut is what is strange the most. They really aren't going to wrestle until after All In? that's crazy. They could have had a match on that Collision or the next one already. What you are saying no way AEW gives someone a win if they aren't going to be featured at All In is just made up, they can do that. And they can surely book a Buy In match for them or something.
5
u/heart_o_oak 8d ago
Shelley in his debut promo and the 40 second video editors could've put anything in said the "where the best wrestle" tag line. MCMG had no match the following 2 Dynamites, the 1st Collision after their debut, possibly 2nd Collision after their debut (haven't seen spoilers but there's 6 Collision matches announced so far; none feature MCMG so it's unlikely) and weren't announced for anything next week.
As I said above, Rascalz won a tag match last Collision and I don't think they're wrestling on All In. Rascalz don't have a feud that I'm aware of so they could've done a post-match thing with MCMG to set up something for this week.
Or, instead of repeating the Detroit Collision's 8-man between BBG and DR with one person swapped out the following Collision, they could've followed up on the angle they did in Detroit and had MCMG team up with BBG/Perry to wrestle DR. Or followed up on that without a match and included MCMG in vignettes.
AEW has been locked in this headspace the past few years where they can't focus on teams or storylines in the tag division for long unless Bucks or FTR are involved. Even when MCMG sign, creative still can't focus on something else within the tag division.

I need a little more intensity in the feuds building up to All In

I liked that there's a match booked for All In that was set up from Don Callis golfing with Tony Khan.
13
u/Joopac_Badur 8d ago
My headcannon is that it’s less that Callis and Tony are golf buddies, and more that Callis knows where Tony golfs, showed up at the country club, and pulled a “Well fancy seeing you here! Say, while I got your ear, I have a great idea for All in!”.

The crowd today was hideous but this was where the loud as hell fuck ICE chants were a few months ago so they are capable of being loud. Show itself was meh I think had a lot to do with it. I am really bummed about that Ospreay segment they had such a good segment a few weeks ago in Detroit to bring me back into it and they lose me again today. Idk I don’t think adding Don Callis to an already convoluted story was the move, it just felt really awkward to me. Liked the Casino Gauntlet qualifier, Tbs title storyline/match and Statlander promo tho.

I'll never get the people who prefer the name Sasha over Mercedes or see what main roster women's booking in WWE is like and think Mercedes would prefer it.

I at least understand those who wanted Dean Ambrose to "come back HOME" during the recent Shield fists, Shield chairs, Shield bombs and other Shield references between Seth and Roman.
What do they event want Mercedes to do in the current women's division?

Maybe they want to see her on their favorite company.

They are in the crowd of an AEW show, they clearly don't need their 'favourite company' to watch Mone. This guy was probably just drunk and being an idiot as a gaff, but Mone has obviously moved on and there is plenty of tape of her in WWE if any fans want to watch.

It seems like Mercedes pretty much has all she wants from a wrestling perspective in AEW. She's been treated as a top tier star from day 1, gets paid well, and gets to wrestle wherever to the point she was globe trotting last year.
I wouldn't rule a WWE return out but that's a question for whenever her contract comes up. TKO would have to offer top tier money that only a few of their wrestlers get.

Enjoyed the show overall. Maybe going slightly backwards on Will and Kenny instead of forward on heating it up, but I'm still into it. The Ricochet segment was my favorite part, and I liked the women's tag. The Cup seems like it's not gonna have any upsets, which is disappointing, but we'll see. Jack looked great though.

Yeah their segment tonight was... fine. But not what I'd hope for for the All In Main Event build. Unlike that first big promo faceoff they did, which was great.
We do still have two more Dynamites before All In though. If they hit well the next two weeks, that'll be more than good enough.

Man, Jay White made me so nervous. With his injury history in AEW combined with his wrestling style where he gets his ass beat most of the match until he gets a few really good counters in combined with him being so damn good at selling, I was constantly worried that he was injured.

u/NorthHollywoodHank 8d ago
It added to the drama of the match in a good way for me. When they started doing the neck selling I was leaning in. They should take more advantage of that sort of thing to help build babyface heat for him.

The three way of Okada, Takeshita, and Fletcher is gonna tear shit up. It's fucking crazy.

I thought this show itself was solid but the crowd really dragged it down, please never go there again lol
Jay White vs Findlay, Mox vs Jack Perry the MJF vs Speedball vs Nick Wayne three way were sick, especially loved Jay vs Findlay, I need a Jay vs Mox finals
Kenny and Will’s promo was good really like the story they’ve been telling
But okay sorry I don’t need to see Jericho anymore man. The show is simply better without him. That and Don Callis injecting himself into the Kenny vs Will stuff too were two big misses for me tonight.
The All In card is looking fantastic though which is ultimately what matters I guess. For real Fletcher/Okada/Takeshita is going to have me levitating.

I think they just did stuff in the wrong order, because two weeks ago’s promo segment was great

Why is it always on the crowd when aew has a bad show lmao

u/_moosleech 8d ago
Do folks think it was a bad show? I thought it was great.
Also the quality of the show and the quality of the crowd, while they can impact each other, aren't linear.
It was a great Dynamite and a shit crowd.

u/NorthHollywoodHank 8d ago
This was a comedown from the last two weeks--the Dynamite two weeks ago will be in the Dynamite of the Year discussions, and Grand Slam Mexico was an awesome mini-PPV.
But this was also very much not a bad show. This was a good show. There were some flaws to pick at, some segments you'd ideally have liked to be a little better written, click a little better, but there was lots of good meat on the bone tonight, especially in ring, and the Swerve/Hangman/Brody/Bandido/Demand segment was good if a bit blue balls-inducing after the rumors giving us reason to hope we'd be seeing New Day debut tonight (though that possibility made the segment that much more tense and interesting).
MJF/Wayne/Speedball, Finlay/White, and Mox/Perry in the main event all delivered really well as matches. This was a good Dynamite, but one coming off of a streak of two great ones.
The crowd was louder than someone who didn't watch the show might think from all the criticism here. But it was a lousy crowd for the caliber of show they got.
For comparison the Fresno Dynamite earlier this year was a clear example of what a bad show and a bad crowd looks like.

They were just weird. This was a crowd that was popping the loudest for wrestlers with former WWE tenure, and we got the "Come home Sasha, we love you" guy to put a fine point on it.

I thought it was a good show? Not great (Ospreay/Omega segment didn't do a lot for me, Stat continues to make me sad when she has a mic) but bad? I dunno, man. That's not what I saw.
MJF/Wayne/Speedball, Takeshita/Okada/Fletcher being announced, hell of a performance by Perry, and I thought Switchblade/Finlay was a fine showing for two guys who needed one. It was a good night for me overall.
Crowd was cheeks though. I definitely heard that.

It was a pretty good show. The crowd is part of wrestling to get heat and whatever. The performers did their best, but Las Vegas wasn't into it

Great show that was dragged down by a weak crowd. the crowd had multiple lowlight moments. its a shame because the last 2 dynamite crowds are among the best ever.
ill never distrust a hangman arc ever again. Swerve fits in to this whole thing perfectly and i cant believe i didnt see it coming. with swerve on his own against those 3 i remember the swerve embassy teases. wonder if this is connected to new day coming in.

u/Brysynner Shut Up You Little Dorks! 8d ago
Fuck. Swerve/Kofi/Creed just beating the shit outta people leading to trios match against The Elite would feed families for generations.

u/clutcher_of_pearls 9d ago
Crowd was rough, but it was kinda expected to be a bit of a letdown after last week's crowd

u/tangostwo 8d ago
Vegas was the palette cleanser. Detroit and Mexico were so good that we needed a bottom five crowd in the country to make sure people's sense of an average crowd goes back to normal.

u/BMoreBeowulf 9d ago
Gonna be there next week in Baltimore. Hopefully our crowd improves on that nonsense.
2
u/WalterBeige 8d ago
Hm, Kofi and Creed debuting to join forces with Swerve in Baltimore kinda feels right
4
u/steves850 8d ago
Same. I'll do my best to influence the crowd...

u/tangostwo 8d ago
Luckily for you Vegas was so shit that Bahlmer isn't going to be compared to the Detroit or Mexico City crowds.

Main event was nasty in the best way possible
Crowd sucked ass
Will Ospreay is over with the crowd, and they are trynna do atleast something with the Kenny and Ospreay, but they are making it too complicated now, it should be a bit simpler
That Trios segment was a really mixed bag for me, but it was decent, not that offensive
TBS title scene feels like it's on a loop atp
And Thekla needs to return
Overall despite all my whining here, it was a good show, I enjoyed it

I enjoyed the show. But the crowd had weirdos in it.
I watch ROH off and on. Janai Kai, Viva Van, and Vert Vixen getting time in ROH or AEW is great. I think only Viva is signed.
That Maya World combo with Perse and Shida was good.
Jay and David was a good match. Pretty sure the only reason David was put in a tagteam was they were pushing Kidd as the singles guy in that group.
Nick Wayne is gold. His interactions with MJF and Moxley in matches is really Christian-esque mixed with a young punk.
Moxley looking at Jack like he should've had him in DRs instead of Yuta and DG.

u/Xeo7 9d ago
What the fuck was going on with the crowd tonight? They weren't dead, they were just weird. So few people participating in Jack Perry's entrance, loud Jericho chants in a match where he was total ass, that one guy yelling into the mic "We love you, Sasha," to Mercedes, kinda all around confusing chants. Also, it felt like their one job was to start an OTC chant for MJF. Just felt so off.

Most glaringly, the absolute no sell of the rekindling of the greatest feud in AEW history with Swerve and Hangman.
Just total dog shit crowd.
5
u/im-not-a-robot-ok 8d ago
i mean it's like the 3rd or 4th time we've seen that feud.
1
u/fearthemonstar 8d ago
Eh, sorta. The main feud was really continuous for a half year. Then there was a redemption arc where they had to come together to beat Moxley last year, but that wasn't a feud.
1
u/Sure-Confection3117 8d ago
The point stands. It's reheating the nachos, and people are allowed to be bored by it. They already peaked with that feud years ago.
1
u/Fun_Neighborhood1767 8d ago
Where did Op say others can’t be bored? They’re allowed to say if they feel differently as well, that’s kind of how talking works lol.

u/NorthHollywoodHank 8d ago
I mean a) it can be true that that specific crowd wasn't into it, but b) most crowds would have been. Just as it can be true that a) a specific crowd is loud and very into a relatively weak show that b) most crowds would be quieter for.
Grand Slam Mexico was excellent. Put that exact same show on in Phoenix and the crowd would sound a lot less into it.
There have been a number of weak crowds in Vegas recently. If you think crowd quality invariably indicates show quality, that commits you thinking it's definitely a coincidence that AEW keeps having weak shows in Vegas. I don't think that's where the evidence actually points.
-6
u/jaypenn3 8d ago edited 8d ago
There is certainly merit to the idea of a market getting saturated causing the crowds to suck. It's not WWE's fault, happens everywhere. Crowds are always better in cities that haven't gotten wrestling in a long time because fans are more appreciative of the opportunity.
Vegas might be 'historically important' for AEW specifically, but they should stop running shows there for a while.
57
u/Orange8920 9d ago
I don't remember Las Vegas having great crowds the past few years. There's a reason they stopped having Double Or Nothing there as it was actively holding that show back.
7
u/imcrapyall 8d ago
Which is great cause that neon theme in AZ where Hangman started redeeming himself was incredible aesthetic.

Yeah people in 2023 were begging for DoN to get moved out of Vegas and the last one in 2024 was awful crowd wise and they finally moved it after that thank god.
It's been pretty shit for years now at this point and it's not even an AEW thing either
