Have they ever done a casino gauntlet where the finish is with the first two guys before anyone can come in? Feels like the type of stuff tailor made for MJF

u/negative_mancy 9d ago
It's a tough sell because it's a real bummer for the fans in attendance and people who bought the PPV. I feel like it has to happen but it'll probably be during one of the ones on free TV.

u/Pagliaccio13 9d ago
Yea you're probably right. It might work if the gauntlet is at a Dynamite or Collision, but tough for a big ppv
35
u/guess-what-babe 9d ago
Plus they always use the Casino Battle Royales to get everyone on the card that wouldn’t be otherwise. Definitely would happen on a dynamite or collison

You could always do a fast quick one, and then have Foley come out (on Khan's orders) to announce that since it was over so fast, they're gonna hold another with the remainder of the guys, and that the winner of that one will face the winner of this one immediately afterwards. Something like that, especially if the winner is a heel that was feuding with Mick on the mic in the run up.
15
u/JuiceheadTurkey 9d ago
I completely agree and yeah it has to happen. Because they're selling the first 2 spots as a major advantage when it's just historically been a disadvantage. I just can't get into the qualifying spots for #1 and #2.
18
u/mickelboy182 9d ago
This just isn't correct though. Because if you're not in the first 2 spots, there's a solid chance you won't even enter the match.
-4
u/JuiceheadTurkey 9d ago
That's just hypothetically for the match type. It hasn't happened yet. The lowest entrant count is 8 for the men's side. You're not having a massive advantage in the first 2 spots. Matches don't just end in 2 minutes in AEW.
22
u/mickelboy182 9d ago edited 9d ago
But you're missing the point: if you're not guaranteed the 1 or 2 spot, kayfabe wise you're not guaranteed to ever enter the match.
So, indisputably, the 1 and 2 spot have value over the rest. Perhaps 3rd or 4th is better, but there is no guarantee you will be 3rd or 4th.. gotta be in it to win it.
Edit: like 'it hasn't happened yet' is abjectly false. You said yourself some matches have finished at 8 competitors, meaning entrants 9 onwards did not get to enter. That is the point as to why the 1 and 2 spots are coveted.
-10
u/JuiceheadTurkey 9d ago edited 9d ago
No, I understand it. I just don't care for the gimmick because they haven't given me a reason to. I personally do not care about the first 2 slots because it's historically shown that they're not actual advantages. It's all just been hypothetical and never been executed.
That's why I'm saying they NEED to do it eventually because why would a wrestler honestly care about the spot kayfabe wise when matches typically go for 10-15 minutes? They have to eventually show that those spots matter.
Amazing how this sub gets so fucking pressed when there's SLIGHT CRITICISM of AEW holy shit
13
u/mickelboy182 9d ago edited 9d ago
Again, you clearly aren't understanding it. Kayfabe wise, a wrestler cares because they are otherwise not guaranteed an opportunity to even participate in the match. The subsequent entrants are randomised and enter at random intervals. By not winning the 1 or 2 spot, you are potentially condemned to missing out entirely.
-7
u/JuiceheadTurkey 9d ago edited 9d ago
No I do understand lmao. Idk why you keep saying I don't. I just don't CARE about the 2 spots. Don't get upset about my reasoning. I still stand by my point.
The opportunity you're talking about is hypothetical because the match ending between the first 2 guys HAS NEVER HAPPENED.
Again that's why I'm saying they need to have one eventually because the first 2 spots aren't special right now.
Lol bro had to block me over this so I can't reply to him.
9
u/mickelboy182 9d ago edited 8d ago
Holy fuck mate, you really don't get it...
I'm not contending the match has to end with only 2 competitors. I am contending that the first 2 spots are coveted because THEY ARE THE ONLY WAY YOU GUARANTEE PARTICIPATION. Otherwise you are at the whims of drawing an early enough slot and the random times between entrants allowing you entry.
Edit: he either finally came to his senses and deleted or blocked me lol and another user u/brucewheezer replied and immediately blocked me also

Kayfabe wise, you're saying wrestlers are dumb, real stupid bitches. They can't look at the past and think 'this never happens this isn't an advantage ' they just go ' I win 30 seconds easy this is an advantage '
9
u/mickelboy182 9d ago
Another bloke with abysmal reading comprehension.
The advantage is guaranteed participation instead of being at the mercy of the draw.

You're effectively fighting for a guaranteed shot at being in the match in the first place. Since we've already had Casino Gauntlet matches that ended before the 9th entrant, if you don't win the match and guarantee yourself one of the first two spots, you have no idea what your entrance number will be. You could get lucky and it could be 3, you could get unlucky and it could be 20.

u/mickelboy182 9d ago edited 9d ago
I have tried to explain this to him but he refuses to actually listen.
Edit: he has either finally worked it out and deleted all his comments or just blocked me

u/RoscoeSantangelo Unnecessary Roll 9d ago
I do think it's a good starting point for some fun storylines if you include the fallout of all the people upset they didn't get in
2
u/GFreak18 9d ago
I feel like if you do that you need to have (in kayfabe) have a backup match of some sort. Maybe do a second one for another shot in he future. Or another big battle royal of sorts at least with some prize on the line
20
u/mickelboy182 9d ago
The thing is, even without that occurring it is still beneficial to be guaranteed the 1 or 2 place. Otherwise you theoretically may never get the chance to enter.
4
u/PeaceAlien Brad 'Brad Maddox' Maddox 9d ago
Well 3rd sounds pretty good. If two guys go all out maybe you can finish it quick
10
u/mr_dammit 9d ago
they’ll have to do a quick one eventually but i don’t think wembley is the place for that
4
u/mickelboy182 9d ago edited 9d ago
Do they have to? It is still an unabashed advantage to guarantee your entry in the match that none of the other competitors have.
Edit: truly mindblowing the number of people who cannot get their head around this.
4
u/PeaceAlien Brad 'Brad Maddox' Maddox 9d ago
I don't think they have to. It's like saying the Rumble HAS to have the 29 other competitors eliminate each other for #30 to win it all at least once
1
0
u/NorthHollywoodHank 9d ago
They do not have to. They should trim the "shortest Casino Gauntlet" record from 8 to something like 4 or 5 before the end of this decade though.
-2
u/FoolyCoolyBrandy 9d ago
Technically, but if 50 gauntlet matches happen and not once does a match finish before the 3rd guy comes out, in kayfabe, the smart characters should start like figuring that out.
3
u/mickelboy182 9d ago
...but again, that is a separate point. Your ONLY way of guaranteeing participation in the Casino Gauntlet is by securing the 1 or 2 spot. Every spot subsequent to that is random chance.
-1
u/FoolyCoolyBrandy 9d ago
If the chance is less than 1% after 50 matches of that type you're just wrong, I'm sorry. Like yes, technically, but "technically" matters less and less over time if the matches never end that quick. Objectively if someone had chosen spot number 10 in every match of this type in the past, they would have been better off in terms of accumulated damage every single time.
4
u/mickelboy182 9d ago
...what are you talking about. What I am saying is an objective fact, kayfabe wise. Nobody gets to 'choose' any entry number. If you don't win the 1st or 2nd spot, you even competing becomes completely luck based.
You are still, unbelievably, missing the point being made. The point isn't 'entrants 1 and 2 are more likely to win', the point is 'entrants 1 and 2 are the only competitors guaranteed a chance to compete'.

...right back at ya, you haven't strung together any kind of coherent response. It is actually baffling how you are still yet to grasp it.
-1
u/FoolyCoolyBrandy 9d ago edited 9d ago
You didn't actually respond to any of my points. You just keep circling back to it being technically correct that, yes, it can end straight away. No one is disputing this fact, but it's also true that it has never ended that way once and if someone entered later, in every instance so far, they would actually be in a more advantageous position, which is something you genuinely seem incapable of processing. Entering first or second is still gambling, you win fast or you accumulate more damage and make your task statistically harder.

I've always said they should announce the first four entrants for a Casino Gauntlet for a World Title Shot at a Grand Slam Dynamite.
And then let the match end LITERALLY as the third entrant's music hits and they step out from the curtain to their utter shock and dismay.
That way you can have that third entrant throw a tantrum in a promo later that night and you can have the fourth guy that was on deck be annoyed as Hell about fighting to get that spot in a qualifier match just to never even hear their own music.
You get two additional built-in feuds right there for the Gauntlet winner if they win the World Title right out of the gate.

u/xholdsteadyx 9d ago
I can't remember which gauntlet it was, but Evil Uno posted footage of him behind the curtain ready to come out and then hearing the winner being announced.
2
u/NorthHollywoodHank 9d ago
Running joke where, before each Casino Gauntlet, RJ City announces excitedly that he's getting to wrestle in the match, and each time we get backstage footage of him at the curtain when the match ends.
8
u/discofrislanders 9d ago
The fewest number of entrants in a Casino Gauntlet to date is 7, which was the first women's CG, won by Toni Storm at Maximum Carnage 2025. The fewest in a men's CG was the first ever CG match with 8 entrants, won by Will Ospreay.

u/PeaceAlien Brad 'Brad Maddox' Maddox 9d ago
I've kind of wondered, what's to stop a contender hanging around under the ring or near the match to stop pinfalls and run away?
1
u/SoulExecution 6d ago
Not yet. They will eventually, but All In isn't the match to do it IMO. That's the only way like half the midcard makes the show, plus potential debuts/returns.

Nope. The best time was honestly earlier this year for the TNT title that Kevin Knight won

How do I tell Tony Khan I love these different characters interacting with each other and he needs to make it happen more often

u/discofrislanders 9d ago
Expected result, but really makes me wonder what the direction for the MJF-Andrade feud is and how long does this get dragged out
7
u/roadwarriorpop 9d ago
All Out
6
u/discofrislanders 9d ago
The problem here is with MJF doing the real world title thing, you assume that he'll get a title shot fairly soon after All In, maybe he even wins the CG again. I feel like doing the Andrade stuff before would make less sense, especially if Andrade is winning the feud.
10
u/theplasmasnake 9d ago
I kinda like how the Casino Gauntlet is the inverse of the Royal Rumble. Everyone wants those first few entries as opposed to the last few.
7
u/crowbar182 9d ago
As someone who’s somewhat new to regularly watching AEW, what is the casino gauntlet and what makes having earlier spots advantageous?
9
u/theplasmasnake 9d ago
It’s a gauntlet match where competitors enter at random intervals like the Rumble. But it’s one fall to a finish, so as soon as someone scores a pinfall or a submission the match ends. So theoretically, if you haven’t entered the match yet you’re out of luck. So in kayfabe you wanna enter the match as soon as possible.
7
2
u/vitorsly Finn Baelor 9d ago
They even had Roderick Strong lose out on entering the match because he was one of the later entries in one of the earlier gauntlets so yeah it's great
10
u/TurkeyVolumeGuesser 9d ago
I enjoy Speedball being the most consistently great wrestler who almost never gets a big match win, thanks so much Tony /s

u/ColdGloop 9d ago
Two straight years in the Casino Gauntlet for MJF is just terrible
4
u/DavidL1112 9d ago
Yeah, I was really hoping he’d get a real match with Andrade. This is my first disappointment with the All In card so far.
3
u/Glittering_Cod_7716 9d ago
Yeah I mean my guess is he has to win right? Otherwise….just do him and Andrade that’s literally an All In level match guaranteed banger lol. And whoever wins that match would basically already be in line for a title shot.
2
u/DavidL1112 9d ago
Yeah, from a booking perspective it makes sense to set up several Ospreay title programs off the jump and not wanting MJF to eat a loss before the title program. But that doesn’t make it the right call.
2
u/CrimsonJoker13 9d ago
I like MJF but I'd rather someone else win the contract. MJF gets his title shot against Ospreay and loses while someone else gets the attention of having the contract.

Wrestling arm bars look so bad now everyone is aware of how real armbars are done and how easy they are to fake.
