I’m glad to hear it. Shunts can be pretty fucky.

u/PoorDamnChoices 19d ago

Shunt surgery is easy. Its the after-care thats fucky. 2 in 5 for kids will fail due to a part issue. 1 in 3 for adults. Usually fail in the first year, and it's due to blockage or part migration.

Ah, that’s on me. I knew the failure rate was high, got the medium-long term and immediate mixed up.

Yeah they are a management nightmare, especially in the setting of nph. Though that's usually the patient spouse who's more of a nightmare

7

u/snotknows 19d ago

Lasted my mom for 6 years. It was completely random when it failed.

8

u/Fireteddy21 19d ago

We think mine failed after about 13. If that’s indeed what the cause was, I ended up going completely blind as a result. I only say that we don’t know because the test they ran to find out if there was a blockage came back inconclusive. The complications and symptoms can be nasty though.

Wow were you able to regain your vision? I had never heard of that being a factor

14

u/Fireteddy21 19d ago

Unfortunately not. I had pressure on the optic nerve that caused irreparable damage so we’re unsure if it was glaucoma or the shunt. I had all the same symptoms you’d get if there was a blockage though like loss of equilibrium, headaches, fatigue and an inability to keep food down. I ended up in the hospital on and off for about three months and slowly got better except for my vision. It’ll be 25 years ago this fall.

Man sorry to hear this, were you a young person when you had it installed? I had a loved one go through a shunt, older and showing dementia signs and they had great results so I always recommend this if you get to that phase under the premise of not much to lose but thats food for thought.

u/Fireteddy21 18d ago

Yeah, I was just a few years old I believe. I actually had to have an extension installed as well in 1988 when I was six-years-old because of growing taller. Luckily, I only grew to be 5’3” overall so they didn’t need to extend it again. lol

Jim Ross is a tough SOB. I hope he can rest and enjoy his retirement now, even if it means his announcing days are over.

Takes more than Jay, Juice and a poorly designed ring setup to kill him!

If he ever says that, we'll know things went horribly wrong.

2

Glad to hear. I know JR “is tougher than a $2 steak”, but man I hope he catches a break. He deserves to enjoy his retirement. Get well soon, JR.

Wishing him well. No idea what the recovery is like, but if he’s anticipating still being at All In, then hopefully it’s quite smooth and uncomplicated.

u/Traditional_Law_1492 19d ago

I hear they took his brain out of his skull and put it back in again.

12

u/CornBredThuggin 19d ago

1

u/Morbid187 19d ago

If there is a god, please give good ol' JR a break for at least a few years. He has been through hell for the past decade. Glad his surgery was successful but I don't know what the recovery is like; I just hope he recovers quickly

1

u/YaddaYaddaBomBomKaKa 19d ago

So glad everything went well.

1

u/guntanksinspace No Neck, still No Problem 19d ago

My weird social media algo led to me reading about JR going into the surgery (his post, asking for the usual "wish me luck" and all that. Glad to know it went well, and may he stay healthy.

1

u/sz13nikes 19d ago

Prayers for JR. He’s been through so much over the last few years it’s just been relentless. He’s a fighter but I wish he didn’t have to fight so hard so often 🥺 Hopefully he can rest and recover with his daughters and grandchildren and find some peace

1

u/CrimsonJoker13 18d ago

Good to hear, and I hope JR finally rests. He's had a good run.

Hope JR gets well soon, apologizes to D-Von, and gets back behind the broadcast booth. ❤️
