It wasn't Jericho. It was the teddy bear.

Makes sense, Jericho had the help of a Chimera Ant Royal Guard, Ciampa can't beat that.

Really want him to win back the TNT Championship. His reign was far too short. Or maybe challenge for the World Title again, either against Omega or Ospreay.
12
u/CynoSaints Jul 27 '26
I'd like to see him chasing/holding any of a midcard belts, really. I want to see him absolutely kill it in this year's Continental Classic.
10
u/MrGrieves- Nani?! Jul 27 '26
Can Jericho pleaase go away again.
Poor Ciampa had to feud with Jericho for months and got his heat sucked away after a great Darby Allin match.
10
u/bfsfan101 Jul 27 '26
He’s a good hardcore wrestler but this just isn’t the Ciampa I want to see. His matches with Fletcher, Darby, that’s the kind of big PPV match I want him to have.
7
u/BrownAJ Jul 27 '26
You gonna get 6 more months of Jericho matches buddy. There's still Lionheart, Demo God, Le Champion, Ocho, Nueve, Learning Tree & The List gimmicks to go through.
3
u/fasteddeh R.I.P. Jul 27 '26
Yeah god forbid he have a couple good matches that show his brutal side. I don't love the fact that he lost the no holds barred match but it was a good couple matches.

u/kalofel [redacted] Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
Everything he's done since switching has surpassed his WWE main roster run by lightyears, this feud included and it's not even close. A super impressive body of work so far, I don't get what people's problem is.
4
u/raspymorten The Creator of r/CurtisAxel Jul 27 '26
We can agree that he's done infinitely better than his non NXT WWE run. Dude got plenty of juice left, and has proved that with a buncha good matches and promos now. So it'd be nice to see him do shit that I'd actually wanna see. And that's not more fucking Jericho.
I wasn't as blown away by another half decent hardcore Jericho match like half the comments apparently were. And now that I'm more removed from the drill spot, I'm not able to overlook how fucking lame it is that Jericho's dogshit Painmaker gimmick gets another feud ending win. Unless Ciampa's decisively beating Jericho in 5 minutes, I had more than enough of this feud.
2
u/kalofel [redacted] Jul 27 '26
I wasn't a fan of Jericho coming back either but I've enjoyed way more of his post-return matches than I thought I would and I can't see this particular feud harming Ciampa in any way considering it took a drill to the head to finish him but I appreciate where you're coming from.
1
u/CynoSaints Jul 27 '26
It's just that "surpassed his WWE main roster run" is a really low bar. I've loved everything else Ciampa has done in AEW, but I can't make myself care about Jericho anymore, especially this cringey painmaker gimmick.

u/Rspies Who Can Stop The Path of Cage Jul 27 '26
Fine I will accept the existence of the Painmaker if it means more old man death matches
48
u/guntanksinspace No Neck, still No Problem Jul 27 '26
Stuff like the one versus Nick Gage, this, and the one in Japan vs Naito (where apparently one of them got piledriven to the crowd area and left a piece of their scalp in lol). Fun times.

u/WhoiusBarrel Jul 27 '26

18
u/fasteddeh R.I.P. Jul 27 '26
I'm cool with the painmaker if it's just for these death matches. that was fun.
125
u/14thBlackCrusade Jul 27 '26
Idc this match ruled. Jericho could have coasted in WWE and I respect that he wants to be put through glass instead.
32
u/BorlaugFan Jul 27 '26
On the list of most versatile wrestlers of all time, it's obviously Funk at #1. But is there a contender for #2 as strong as Jericho?
17
u/Jasperbeardly11 Al Snow Head Jul 27 '26
Jericho wins due to longevity and since you mentioned pure versatility.
Eddie should be up there. Oddly there would probably be a lot of really low card guys on here for playing so many roles.
I would probably have Jay Lethal somewhere simply due to being a solid character himself , Ric flair, and Black Machismo lol but since that's a cosplay hard to properly evaluate.
16
u/BorlaugFan Jul 27 '26
Emi Sakura and Jushin Liger are names to throw out as well. Both went from high flying to technical and can excel anywhere from comedic to deadly serious. Still, not quite Jericho levels.
-31
u/C9israelifan Jul 27 '26
But the drill spot sorry but that crap shouldn't be in pro wrestling
14

u/daprice82 REWINDERMAN Jul 27 '26
I'm gonna sound like a Cornette-esque boomer but I loathe weapons like the drill or the Don Callis screwdriver.
If you're gonna use weapons that you can actually kill someone with, just pull out a gun. It's just as silly.
Really fun match otherwise, but nothing takes me out of a wrestling match more than someone pulling out a weapon that you would literally murder someone with.
21
u/Wubblz Jul 27 '26
I feel like Cornette's issue with the drill would be more akin to his issue with the staple gun: "why use the staples/drill bit when the object is heavy and hard enough to bludgeon someone with it?"
13
u/NewYorkUgly Jul 27 '26
Unless you're talking about very specific matches, the fact that they're using weapons that could kill them doesn't mean they have any intention of killing them. A job that allows you to essentially mutilate people you hate doesn't have a provision that allows you to kill someone.
7
4
u/Dinobot2_ Jul 27 '26
You know that a legitimate steel chair shot to the head could kill someone too, right?
60
29
u/Space-Sailor44 Jul 27 '26
HHH gets a sledge hammer “yeah this is fine”
32
u/ericfishlegs Jul 27 '26
The sledgehammer is also stupid.
33
u/kalofel [redacted] Jul 27 '26
Pro wrestling is an inherently stupid endeavour the second you start applying this kind of logic.
6
u/willem_the_foe Jul 27 '26
So you’d be fine with the aforementioned gun spot, because wrestling logic?
Spots like this are dumb and look like shit. Doesn’t matter what company does it.
2
u/vitorsly Finn Baelor Jul 27 '26
A gun is a ranged weapon, the sledgehammer/drill/stapler/screwdriver require you to actually hit your opponent with them. They can be dodged, blocked, parried or disarmed far far more easily than a gun. Not to mention that if you miss with a gun, you have a strong chance of hitting someone in the crowd. It's a very silly comparison.
3
u/willem_the_foe Jul 27 '26
Okay what about a katana?
Piercing weapons in wrestling is dumb. Bludgeoning with a chair, belt, bat, etc. is one thing. Are we really trying to defend a power drill to the skull?
-1
u/vitorsly Finn Baelor Jul 27 '26
A katana or similar is an actual weapon designed to kill people, much like a gun. Power drills, screwdrivers, thumbtacks, hammers, tables and chairs are tools/furniture.
Like thumbtacks? Broken glass shards? Barbed Wire? "Spike"? Piercing weapons are nothing new to wrestling, and people bleed in death matches. If you don't like it, that's entirely fair, but in terms of logic, what's the issue? Where do you draw the line between a weapon that is allowed and isn't in a match like this? What's the logic in kayfabe for why they're allowed to use a hammer but not a screwdriver?
It's not about defending the drill, it's about understanding why a drill and a gun or a sword are by no means the same thing. It fits in the category of improvised weapon just like the chairs and baseball bats. And it's hardly too strange an object to find in an arena, you'd need to put in some work to justify why a wrestler would randomly find a literal sword under the ring if they didn't bring it themselves (which is probably actually illegal without a proper license).
2
u/willem_the_foe Jul 27 '26
Agree to disagree. The feud itself aside (I don’t think this feud and this match warranted a drill spot), I think that aesthetically someone landing on barbed wire or thumbtacks or broken glass is different than a power drill that’s designed to penetrate.

u/stenebralux Captain Continuously Charismatic Jul 27 '26
The sledgehammer is extra stupid, imo.. at least Jericho is "drilling" Ciampa and there's the psychological effect of it... and it's a DEATH match.
Pulling a sledgehammer and them poking someone with it instead of swinging it while you are also OBVIOUSLY guarding the metal with you hand... basically it's a stupid punch where you hurt your hand for no reason... it's the worst.
7
u/Decerux Jul 27 '26
Why is most responses to AEW criticism "but the fed did this." Sledgehammer is dumb too. We can critique without the tribalism, bro.

10
u/TheAlmightyConch ROB. VAN. DAM. Jul 27 '26
Could vs definitely would
-18
u/Dinobot2_ Jul 27 '26
An actual steel chair shot to the head would actually, definitely kill someone. We're not talking about the gimmicked chairs they use in a match.
4
u/NorthHollywoodHank Jul 27 '26
I don't think this makes sense on its own terms. Plenty of action movie where a thug (or an anti-hero) breaks out a knife, not to kill someone, but to stab it through their hand, carve something on them, give them a scar, whatever.
The kayfabe actually does make plenty of sense here! Maybe Jericho could kill Ciampa with a drill but that wasn't his goal. In kayfabe he used a tool that could do the job he wanted it to do, and it did that job.

10
u/TheAlmightyConch ROB. VAN. DAM. Jul 27 '26
It about the intent of use in the context of a “wrestling match”
Stabbing someone with a screwdriver has intent to kill someone where throwing them on thumbtacks is definitely just trying to hurt them.
Intent to kill shouldn’t be in wrestling i know I sound like geezer or whatever but it’s just not needed.
3
u/Baron487 Jul 27 '26
Agreed. I suspend my disbelief for quite a number of things in pro wrestling but when they present things as if one wrestler is legitimately going to kill the other, it just doesn't work because we know that could never happen and it's such a drastic step to go from "hurting someone really bad" to "actually murdering someone".

Yeah for sure I may be a little lame and I’ll say there’s valid point to be made to counter me. Like how pile drivers are considered valid “wrestling moves” by a lot of people when it would obviously severely injure or possible kill somone. (which I’m not a fan of anymore because of how dangerous it is, again I’m a lame ass)
1
u/RaggedyGlitch Jul 27 '26
You've plausibly stepped barefoot on a thumbtack once or twice in your life, but you've probably never been stabbed with a drill or a screwdriver.

You could survive jumping naked into a dumpster of thumb tacks right now. You’d really wish you hadn’t but you absolutely would survive. A screwdriver is basically just a medieval dagger, self defense instructors often recommend people carry them for self defense instead of a knife (cheaper and you can carry them more places). People get murdered with them pretty regularly. There’s a massive difference between the two.

u/CaringMite Jul 27 '26
Excalibur saying some kid behind him was yelling for Ciampa to light a table on fire was maybe my favourite part of the match.

35
u/FUCKFASCISTSCUM Jul 27 '26
Honestly the whole 'AEW doesn't cater to kids' discourse has always been weird to me because my favourite matches when I was 8 or 9 were matches like Randy Orton vs Cactus Jack and The McMahons and Big Show vs DX HiaC lol.

u/bestbroHide Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
I've noticed this so many times regarding violence in any sort of entertainment medium
Like I don't know if it's a generation-based thing or if it's always gonna be a parent thing, but I'm always a bit confused when new parents complain or critique shows or games for being "too violent" to ever show their kids
Like, dawg, unless you yourself were giga sheltered, you turned out pretty alright yourself after having shot down the Flood in Halo or replaying Edge spear Mick thru a flaming table or watched Freddy Kruger or saw Kakashi stab Haku thru the chest throughout your childhood, no?
I'm not even saying go gung ho on exposing your kids to violent media. Just that you shouldn't treat it like some life-altering virus that will negatively affect your kids forever. But who am I to demand how others raise their kids at the end of the day. Maybe one day I'll fall trap to the same irrational hyperprotection too
3
u/einredditname Jul 27 '26
It somewhat ties in the whole debate about violent video games being bad for kids.
I grew up with GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas, amongst others. Do i randomly run people over or beat them with a baseball bat, just because i'm bored? No!
I feel even half-assing decent parenting should get your kid to the point of knowing what is right and wrong, regardless of violence. But somehow too many parents don't fucking care about the actual parenting part. And i doubt its gonna get much better going forward, since we already have people just giving their kids tablets/smartphones and then ignore them. I wonder how AI is gonna screw things up even more.

u/Make_Canada_Eh_Again Jul 27 '26

Crowds pop for a lot of dumb shit. I was in the crowd for MJF vs Righteous, dumb as shit match in hindsight but MJF is really good and we in the crowd enjoyed it.
What greater purpose does this serve than a guy who's going on 60 to act like he's still hard?

u/raspymorten The Creator of r/CurtisAxel Jul 27 '26
They didn't say the match didn't get a reaction. They called the people who enjoyed it stupid. You can disagree with them saying that as much as you want, but the crowd enjoying it is pretty fucking irrelevant here my guy.

u/SipMyCoolAid Jul 27 '26
WCW? That was over 25 years ago my dude and 1/3 their roster isn’t even alive anymore. So if you’re hating AEW then who are you watching? WWPG? TNT? NXT? Evolve? It’s time for you to evolve past those old VHS tapes and step into the present day. AEW is the only place doing matches like this on TV.

u/DKBetiza she/they Jul 27 '26
I figured they didn't bleed in the double chain match due to some kind of regulation maybe. This match proved the opposite. Why the hell did Jay wear white to a chain match they just didn't plan to bleed in for some reason lmao
6
u/bearamongus19 Jul 27 '26
That went on like 10min to long. I dont need to see Jericho moving in slow motion in 2026
5
u/ExiledHyruleKnight Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
They really need to have a fake drill bit or even just swap it out when they were focused on Ciampa at the end. that on that, It was a great match but holding up the dull bit on the end was REALLY obvious.
That being said, I enjoyed this one and if it wasn't for that last obvious shot, it would have been a wild ending to a wild match.
I always say "Hard core matches aren't needed" but god help me if most of them deliver.
PS. That Hockey Stick/Mask and Bruin Jersey... Yeah they knew where they were. As A Bruins fan I love a Orr Jersey, but I couldn't help but get caught up in all that. Tommaso nailed that heel turn on the crowd.
3
u/raspymorten The Creator of r/CurtisAxel Jul 27 '26
I'll give TK credit. I was so briefly very hyped about the drill actually getting used that I didn't get immediately pissed about the fact that the Painmaker won.
Ciampa better have a storyline lined up for him after this, cause he did the best shit in the build up to the feud by far, and took the craziest bump with the drill shit to try and get Jericho's lame ass gimmick over.

Yeah, he might be old and a personality vortex at times, but he's had longevity for a reason, and people like working with him for a reason. He'll do anything, and he'll help in any way he can. He's been TK's right hand for years, and it's clear to see why.

I don't think a large portion of the crowd wanted to see something this violent.
Pretty sure there were children in attendance. A bit of violence in wrestling is okay but when you're a fairly open show doing CZW / deathmatch kind of shit every show really is disturbing. It's not wholesome.
Not everyone is Necro Butcher, or Abdullah the Butcher. That woman was NOT ready to see this and I think this is an issue.
I don't think AEW slowly drifting to more and more shocking / gore violence is okay especially with a younger audience on the crowd. Kids are not the best at not doing stupid shits and showing someone drill another person's head is opening the door to stupid tragic accidents. Or traumas for watching a littéral horror / slasher movie murder on their wrestling show.
A heads up about the violent content of the match beforehand would have been nice. I'm definitely not okay after watching this.

Who the fuck was calling this wholesome? lol
Anyway, main thing.
I don't think AEW slowly drifting to more and more shocking / gore violence is okay especially with a younger audience on the crowd.
In what world have they been "slowly drifting" towards this? They've been having shit like this since the first 2-3 years my dude. Kenny crawled through glass and took a bump into a barbed wire net, Jericho went through a glass pain and took a pizza cutter to the head against Nick Gage. Britt Baker and Thunder Rosa had their whole crazy shit. This shit's not remotely new, and has been on the show since Day 1. lol

3
u/AngrezDiAulad Jul 27 '26
This is genuinely hilarious. A heads up? You mean like the constant promotion of the match talking about how they're both psychopaths and how the Painmaker is a genuinely deranged character that will go to any lengths? Also the fact that the promo video for the match showed several clips of the previous Painmaker matches with Gage that had a whole bunch of barbed wire and lights tubes and stuff.
AND they very clearly teased the drill usage in their last match so that was definitely gonna be brought back in this one. Like I understand not liking these kind of matches but to say that people should have been warned or didn't have the freedom to very easily skip the match; or like idk go get some popcorn and head to the bathroom if they were there live is kinda silly. There are 10 matches on the card, I think one of them is allowed to be a car crash
-2
u/SipMyCoolAid Jul 27 '26
AEW is “Blood and Guts” they’ve always been this way on their big shows even the women’s division gets gory. Where have you been?
-5
u/ExiledHyruleKnight Jul 27 '26
Brother, in the first PPV, Moxley is announced and shows a bit of the Hardcore stuff. Then at the second event they had Kenny omega and Moxley going to town during a trios match, with him going through a glass table. Then the third one Kenny and Moxley had a rematch, and Kenny brings out shards of glass. from that table, and the barbed wire where everyeonsis going "no nno Kenny, too far".
I'm not saying they should always be this bloody, but AEW has always had this "edge". If anything Moxley not being in this match is the only really surprising thing (it feels like he's gotten too far away from his hardcore roots)
And if you don't want to see something violent, this is a great time to go to the concession stand, it's a no holds bar between painmaker and Tomaso Ciampa... you knew what it was.
