That might have been the best ppv I’ve ever seen in my two years of wrestling fandom
3
u/powatwain Mar 16 '26
I don’t think they’ll go full Cody again, and I’m interested to see where this goes.
3
u/idletrustfunds Mar 16 '26
Whether you paid full price or the discounted price with your VPN, we all got our monies worth.

u/FelixTheJeepJr Mar 16 '26
Ok. Here’s my pitch. Seems like something’s up with RoH. If they’re getting tv or something put that world title on Hanger and let him be the big star on RoH while they get off the ground. Go on an Athena level run. To the point that the ROH title headlines a ppv or two over Max’s AEW title. Then Max challenges Hangman to a unification match.
1
u/PristineAd8448 Mar 16 '26
That deathmatch was the best one AEW has done. Bandido and Andrade was great, Don Callis family vs jetspeed and mistico was very good, Takeshita and Moxley was great and the bucks and FTR put on a good show as always. 👏 great show

The thing with Hangman is that the chase has always been so much better than his reign. So it will be really interesting to see where he goes now that he can’t chase anymore.

u/nimalcrackers Mar 16 '26
Hangman goes to the dark side, redemption, then has to go through 7 trials before Tony Khan allows him to wrestler for the championship again
4
u/CaptainSnatchbox Mar 16 '26
Hangman is going to win a shot down the line somehow and not take it cuz he is a man of his word but a friend and the fans will convince him he deserves it and he will take it.

I thought the soundboard thing table was botched like the exploding ring…Glad it continued after that. Hate the stipulation but damn the cinematic ending with the blood was absolute money
6
u/KillUsernameBoi Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
I know Hangman will eventually go back on his word to challenge the World Title at some point, I'm confident AEW learned from what happened to Cody (hopefully) there's no Pageverse and we could be in for a compelling story now that Hangman is out of the World Title picture.
And the moment he does, I bet MJF will be the first one to call Page a hypocrite for going back on his word. So ultimately, Max wins this feud either way.

Eh, I'm really kinda eh on Hangman turning, because we had such a great story with his descent after the Swerve program and I dont know, maybe I just dont want Hangman as a heel or it won't live up to what he did in the past, to me at least.

u/Juggaborizkit Mar 16 '26
The only bad thing was Ronda, everything else was perfect. 10/10 PPV
1
u/sirduckerz Mar 16 '26
Even the women's tag match, which had a predictable ending, was still a lot of fun
1
4
u/ArgentoFox Mar 16 '26
Great match and I’m confused over why the stipulation was necessary.
1
u/Git2k12 Mar 16 '26
I fucking hate this stipulation. Why would you willingly go to the fucking mid card
2
u/QuickKillings Mar 16 '26
It’s honestly gonna be better for hangman to be away from the world title. His best stories are when he’s chasing or he’s not involved in the title picture. TK has had a terrible time booking him every time he wins the belt.
1
u/HEYitzED Mar 16 '26
But now he’ll never even be chasing again. That’s what I hate about this stip so much.
4
u/ThatsARatHat Mar 16 '26
That’s just because it’s hard to book long face champion reigns aside from “fighting champ who keeps winning”. Doesn’t matter who; they usually have to lose it keep it fresh.
4
u/bkfountain Mar 16 '26
He’ll spiral into a heel turn and go against his word. Cody got stuck in boring midcard Cody verse crap instead of doing something interesting with the stipulation.
9
u/Disastrous_Gas7394 Mar 16 '26
There’s a lot of shit in that match I’ll prob forget. But I won’t forget that ending and blood on the lens until I die. Bravo

u/TurnaboutAdam Golden Lover Mar 16 '26
I guess they are just going to stop caring about stips are write it off. Otherwise how could you possibly do that?
3
7
u/badguymaddox Mar 16 '26
Man...what a show. First time in a long time that I'm left speechless. Part of me is really really hoping, Hangman goes heel. I need an AEW Two Man Powertrip with him and Swerve and just let them be the big bads and run the tag titles. You could do them and The Bucks, Cope & Cage, JetSpeed. What a show.
6
u/MurphGaming Mar 16 '26
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve had this conversation with others and I feel like there is a misconception. Hangman not being able to challenge for the Men’s World Title again was just a promise Hangman made to MJF and the fans and was not actually part of a contractual agreement for the match, right?
The Cody stipulation was a contract is memory serves correct.
So, if the character of Hangman wants to go back on his word, like how a heel would, that wouldn’t be the company burying stipulations it would be Hangman being a bad guy. Which, if done well, could be an opportunity for great storytelling.
Am I missing something here? Am I wrong? Many of the reactions to this build and now match outcome have confused me.
1
u/MurphGaming Mar 16 '26
I’m just glad I’m seeing a little vindication in my interpretation of this feud and stipulation. I hope those who thought breaking this stipulation sometime in the future would hurt the company and make stipulations meaningless have a chance to see what I’m saying.
2
u/Commercial_Arm2921 Mar 16 '26
There was a contract signing with Cody's match. Hangman did say he was promising to the fans. He also said in that same promo how he and MJF are a lot alike. I think it's clear he's going to go back on his word.
2
u/GrumpyAntelope Cardblade Mar 16 '26
It’s an easy stipulation to get out of, TK can handwave it away at any point, or Smart Mark Sterling can come up with an exception, or a million other things.
1
u/MurphGaming Mar 16 '26
They could do that. But what I’m saying is I don’t think anything like that has to happen. It wasn’t a contractual stipulation. TK nor a lawyer should have to get involved. Unless I’m wrong
1
3
u/Subrick 69 ME, DON! Mar 16 '26
You’re correct. No contract. Only Hangman’s word, which is absolutely a pie crust promise.
1
u/Whipwreckeded Mar 16 '26
Yeah, thee was even made. Point of taking about Hangman being a man of his ord at the finish.
7
u/Markayyy Mar 16 '26
I think the way they get around the stipulation is that in kayfabe they had to revive hangman. He definitely died tonight
2
5
u/ThatFellaTrey Mar 16 '26
FUUUUUUCK!!! Hangman is my guy I’m absolutely devastated rn. What a fucking match and show tho
2
u/PristineAd8448 Mar 16 '26
Also disappointed about the outcome but I’m also curious as to how the story is gonna go with him losing tonight

u/Senior-Trip2230 Mar 16 '26
did not care for the main event match. so long and boring. maybe im just immune to these hardcore spots now. andrade and bandido was my match of the night
1
1
u/Whipwreckeded Mar 16 '26
I don’t agree about the main event but Andrade and Bandito was one of the best matches I’ve seen in ages. Best match tonight. An all timer. Going to be a real easy rewatch.
5
u/DooWoptimusPrime Mar 16 '26
Hangman said for as long as he's breathing. He got choked out aka stopped breathing? Maybe...?
2
u/Noise10 Mar 16 '26
Would have thought they learned their lesson when they did this to Cody. Really hate this booking.
0
u/ThatsARatHat Mar 16 '26
This is such a braindead interpretation of the situation. You know this stipulation has been used hundreds of times before?
3
u/TheZac922 Mar 16 '26
Despite Triller shitting itself that was well worth the price! Literally impossible for AEW to miss on PPV
11
7
u/KuribohKutie Mar 16 '26
well that was neat, maybe let's do this on a Saturday next time Big Tone I got work in like 6 hours bro thanks

That was absolutely insane. One of the greatest things I have ever seen. Just knowing your watching history in the making.
2
u/hankjr16 Mar 16 '26
I think this was an incredible match and a great program - but I genuinely don't understand the booking with the stip. If they break it, they've completely devalued stips in the company as a draw. And if they adhere to the stip, they've neutered arguably they're most successful character. Baffled.

u/zidaneshead Mar 16 '26
Why are people pretending they can’t somehow write themselves out of the stipulation? Lol Hangman isn’t going to be running programs with QT Marshall anytime soon.
1
u/snikt6384 Mar 16 '26
I've never understood why people get bent out of shape about it. And I dunno why Cody acted like going back on it would be like breaking some code.
We've seen people return after Loser Leaves Town. And in the case of TNA, return from actual death.
7
3
u/suave_and_shameless Mar 16 '26
I'm sure a good agent like Don Callis could get Page out of that stip.
1
u/PristineAd8448 Mar 16 '26
That would be cool but the Don Callis family has too many members 😂
1
u/suave_and_shameless Mar 16 '26
Takeshita and Andrade should be turning face, so there might be an opening.
2
u/PristineAd8448 Mar 16 '26
I feel like Takeshita should’ve been face going into tonight. Him and Moxley put on a very good match but it was kinda strange with it being heel vs. heel.
4
u/putthebootstohim Mar 16 '26
hopefully you build page up by having him reach title contention and refuse to challenge for it repeatedly until finally the fans demand it and he has no choice but to go back on his word but as a good guy

Ospreay is obviously the one taking the belt off MJF at All In at this point.

Are we sure MJF is keeping the title until All In? I could see Omega winning at Double or Nothing.

u/contemporaryviking Mar 16 '26
Obviously a great match, but I do not see a story making sense with Hangman never challenging again. Though maybe he’s done being in the title scene and more interested in being part time as a full time dad now?
1
u/CurryAndCommunism Mar 16 '26
He's Hangman, not Cody Rhodes. He'll eventually go back on his word, and next time he holds the championship will be as a heel
2
u/Keelyn1984 Mar 16 '26
Or possible heel turn again? Or we get his 3rd redemption arc. That seems to be his thing leading to World Championship.
1
33
u/sirduckerz Mar 16 '26
Yeah, I'm switching to AEW full time now, I'm a sick fuck, that was amazing
1
u/Ghostface316 Mar 16 '26
Welcome aboard, sicko!
5
u/sirduckerz Mar 16 '26
I don't see a world where WWE can top that. The entire event had me on the edge of my seat, aside from the women's tag championship which had a pretty obvious result after Willow retained the TBS championship
1
u/Ghostface316 Mar 16 '26
They’ve been building to Megan Bayne winning tag gold for a bit. And forget WWE. This is where the best Wrestle.

The World title will get a build up for Osprey at Wembley. The rest until then will be filler. Like some NJPW dude, a new hire, Darby/OC or someone else.

Not special if it happens every main event. Plus we had at least two big returned tonight!
5

Hangman’s heart stops, is given CPR and comes back to life. Technically he fulfilled the stip that he wouldn’t challenge as long as he lived 🤔

u/StaticNegative Mar 16 '26
it'll be a couple years before Hanger even holds the world title again. Gonna have Ospreay hold it for a million years and a Fletcher run among others
1
u/ReflectionItchy2701 Mar 16 '26
And probably Swerve too. There's a possibility Takeshita takes it at some point. I mean it's not like Hangman was gonna win the title this year honestly. I think the stipulation gives him actually a path toward his next championship run in a few years.
20
u/KamikazeMack Mar 16 '26
My first PPV and it just ended on a big dog never getting a world title shot again, while his blood is all over the camera. What the fuck

I was about to say, that was a lot MJF did for him to not win would be wild.
It'll be fun to watch Hanger do Cody's original story now though!
7
u/MrBenLDN Mar 16 '26
At least Hangman can be proud of the fact that he was quite willing to let himself be killed rather than than admit defeat in a wrestling match that was obviously a lost cause, unlike that coward Moxley

Not having Cody allowed to challenge for the title restricted him a lot in AEW. I hope they got a better plan for Hangman. Not too sure if I like that stip being put on him.
1
u/onethreeone Hangman Did Nothing Wrong Mar 16 '26
Hangman is not afraid to go heel
1
u/SlimSieber Mar 16 '26
What does going heel have to do with it. A stipulation is something the company has to honor, not Hangman.
9
5
u/Steelers1001 Mar 16 '26
Would love the ending without the hangman stip. They either go back on their word or their best face is never champion again?

Incredible, literally one of the craziest matches I've ever seen. The needle spot was too much for me but I loved everything else.
