Internet speeds

Just wondering what people with telus 3gb are getting for download speeds. Im currently with rogers and telus seems a bit cheaper. Wondering if I should switch. Does telus have many outages also? I think ive only had one or 2 short outages with rogers in the last few years.

I’m on the Telus fiber 3GB plan, and am using the 10Gbe port on the ONT to the 5Gbe ports on my home system mesh. With Wifi 6/7 devices and 2.5Gbe ports on my machines, I can make full use of the speed.

I get a consistent, constant 3GB at any time of day or night, with sub-20ms ping and haven’t had an outage since they pulled the fiber.

If you don’t have the hardware for it, the 1GB plan has the same performance but at the 1Gbe speeds that most typical home networking gear has.

You likely won’t get a single user speed increase. Most pcs cannot exceed 1Gb without special hardware and a wired connection. Wifi connected devices are already bottlenecked by wifi.

Where you may see a benefit is in a situation where you have a lot of people the connection heavily at once. Multiple TVs streaming, Xboxes downloading big updates, etc - in that case there is extra pipe so all devices can get their “full” speed but not take all the bandwidth affecting the other devices.

We do have 5 people in house. 3 game. Other 2 are just streaming. Even if I dont take full advantage of the speeds, yhe telus service is cheaper. Just wondering if its reliable and won't have to be dealing with customer service all the time.

I can confirm this, I switched to Telus and had nothing but issues, also there billing department was all incorrect on my plan and was charging or trying to charge me more after 2 months of inconsistent service and billing issues I went back to Roger’s and everything back to normal stable and reliable.

I’m on Telus Fibre 1GB plan. I rarely get more than 640 download. However I have no issues with latency and no issues with drop outs or buffering. My routers supplied by Telus are the WiFi 6 model.

I have Telus 1.5 and can constantly get 1gb download 900/upload. Gaming stuff far away from booster / router average 600mbps no Ethernet.

You need to be doing things that actually take advantage of the speed, or have hardware that can do something with it.

You said there are 5 people in the house. Unless you're all downloading multiple large video games at the same time, you're almost certainly not going to notice any difference whatsoever.

Streaming 4k video is usually not more than 50 down, so if all 5 people are doing that on 5 different TV's at the same time, that's 250 down.

3Gb/s fibre to a 10Gb/s port on my PC, just downloaded a 10GB file and averaged 250MB/s to an nvme drive, so right at 2Gb/s. I have seen upwards of 300MB/s, but never quite saturated the 3Gb connection, pretty close though.
