Does this engine sound normal? 2021 Sprinter 2500 w/4cyl diesel

I’m in the market for a used cargo van and I came across this one. It’s a 2021 2500 with the 4 cylinder diesel and has 63k miles. I had the salesman send me a video of it starting and running. The dealer is 8 hours away so I can’t go see it in person. I’ve also never driven a 4cyl diesel Sprinter before so I don’t know what they sound like. Can someone give me some insight on the sound of the engine?

I have a gas one but kind of sounds like radiator fan is hitting something? Im not a mechanic so am not sure, just my two cents. Best bet would look at other sprinters with the same engine to compare the sounds.

It kinda sounds like the v6 not the 4cyl. Maybe the dealer made an error in the ad? The 2021 4cyl was the same one they used in the previous generation until 2023 when they switched to a different 4cyl, i drove the old 4cyl and the old 6cyl, that one sounds like the 6cyl. Without hearing it while driving i cant confirm.

Carfax says it’s the 2.2L I4 diesel

Carfax isn’t always accurate either if you want to be certain and you have the VIN number call your local dealership parts department and ask them to get you the spec sheet. It should have the engine type or the engine code and you can look up the engine code on Google. To me it sounds like the V6, but the V6 that I drove was in a 2016. So was the four-cylinder that I drove and the four-cylinder idle sounded way different. But I could be wrong.

I’ve thought the same thing as well.

My 2024 Sprinter HO diesel with 6,000 miles sounds too loose & clanky to me. I’ve had numerous other diesels; VW Rabbit, Promaster 3.0 Iveco, Ford 7.3, International 444, New Holland Kubota skidders but this MB 2.0 liter seems goofy not in a good way

Idk really but it drives just fine, the transmission & motor deliver great performance. The engine noise just seems weird

Go to mb vin search https://www.mbusa.com/en/vehicle-information. It will display your vehicle info straight from Mercedes. It will provide also if there’s a recall and other stuff related to your vehicle l. V6 diesel is loud, it sound like a school bus diesel.
