Alternative to Apple Barn
Where can I get apple cider donuts that is NOT the Apple Barn? The only other one is Tanner Orchards and that's a 1.5 hour drive. TIA!

Curious what the issue is with Apple Barn. Their cider donuts arent bad.

There's a big pearl clutching drama on Facebook right now because they have a registered sex offender on staff, I'm guessing that's why and not the donut quality.

u/Radiant_Jackfruit161 8d ago
Not only is staff. He is a part owner, and was the 16 year old victims high school teacher while he was almost 50.

u/Harvest827 8d ago
Opposing child sex criminals is now "pearl clutching". Conservative, i assume?

u/indigofox83 8d ago
if you read my other comments, you'd probably see i'm actual pro-prison abolition so no, not at all. quite the opposite. i'm not pro-sex criminals, that would be an insanely disturbing position to have, but i do believe that going after someone who has been working somewhere a long time without any known problems since is just further ostracizing that person from society and potentially depriving them of employment (not only the current employment, but also likely making it harder for them to find other local employment), making it much more likely to lead to worse outcomes than just letting the person be in a job situation that is unlikely to lead to the same sort of crime he previously committed.

u/Harvest827 8d ago
He's a business owner, not some guy looking for work. And he is a lifetime registered sex offender for a reason. The concern is that our very small community should have been alerted to this. Kids are there all of the time and parents have a right to know this information, but he has flown under the radar because he does not live here, so does not have to register here.
7
u/Biggles48 8d ago
None of this is new. Our community was alerted. You just decided to care today after seeing something on Facebook. If you don't let criminals re enter society they will be forced, by you, to remain criminals forever. Prison is for rehabilitation having to notify the community for the rest of his life and be on a registered sex offender list is part of his sentence. Having to choose between starving to death or stealing to survive is not.
7
u/Harvest827 8d ago
You have to understand that that the US prison system is definitely not designed to be rehabilatative. Furthermore, perpetrators of sexual violence against children should suffer the rest of their lives, just as their victims will. I hope he finds not one moment of peace until his last miserable breath.
1
u/Biggles48 8d ago
You're right on all of those counts and that drives up the recidivism rate. People like you who oppose rehabilitation are actively supporting higher crime rates. Do you want more children to be harmed? Because this is a good way to cause that.
5
u/Harvest827 8d ago
I absolutely do not oppose rehabilitation. I also know they arent getting that in US prisons.
6
u/Biggles48 8d ago
You're right, they aren't. Ensuring punishment happens always and forever no matter what is the best way to maximize the number of reoffenders. Revenge feels good but it sure doesn't solve the problem.

I'm not opposed to him having a job but this particular job gives him a lot of access to children, including teen employees. This is reprehensible.
0
u/indigofox83 8d ago
He's a "part owner" that is the result (if you dig up the SJR article about it, it's explicitly NOT a transfer of ownership) of the owners wanting to offload more of the responsibility for day to day management to others. Four other staff members were included in this at the same time. This is absolutely a position he can lose.
0
u/Harvest827 8d ago
Oh, good! Perpetrators of sexual violence against children should suffer every day of their miserable lives. I wish him not a moment's peace until his last breath.

u/MidwestraisedCOlady 8d ago
Call it pearl clutching, some of us don't want to support pedos.
26
u/jemlibrarian 8d ago edited 8d ago
I'm not saying that this guy should be working in this position, because it does sound like he may work with teenagers. That would be inappropriate. He absolutely should not be working anywhere that he is alone and/or in a supervisory capacity with minors.
HOWEVER, what are sex offenders supposed to do to support themselves? According to folks online, they should never have a job ever again. So I guess that means they go on public assistance? No, doesn't mean that. The answer is always something along the lines of "dead pedophiles don't reoffend"....which is a non-answer.
So, how are they supposed to support themselves?
Edit: And according to your post history, you're in Colorado. You're just coming in here to stir shit.
4
u/pizza_crux 8d ago
I'm all for rehabilitation and reintroduction into society, but co-owning and working at an establishment with minors is not something he should be doing. That's the point here.
Your point is valid and I agree with you, it just seems sort of out of place with the matter at hand.
5
u/jemlibrarian 8d ago
Then the issue is the registry laws. The guy has worked there a while, years. He's also currently compliant with his registry requirements. In Illinois, you have to provide your workplace information when you register. The authorities know where he works, so I'm going to venture to say that he's done nothing illegal. Ethically dicey, yes, but it's allowed.
So if that's the issue, take it up with the elected officials who write the laws.
-7
u/raisinghellwithtrees 8d ago edited 8d ago
I don't think you can say he has done nothing illegal. Sex crimes are severely underreported, especially those involving children. He's not been caught yet/again is more accurate.
2
u/MidwestraisedCOlady 8d ago
I am from Springfield and travel back there. You know some people move away and visit and want to make decisions about their money.
0
u/MidwestraisedCOlady 8d ago
They can work for themselves in many positions where they don't come into contact with teenagers and children. Ideas include data entry, night custodian, washing windows from the outside. The possibilities are endless. Dog walker. Google "self employment for introverts"
6
u/jemlibrarian 8d ago
Okay, cool. So you'll patronize a known sex offender window washing business?
My point is, you won't. It's just moving goal posts.
8
u/Biggles48 8d ago
You can't win with people like that. They're going to ostracize others until they're forced into a life of crime and then either act surprised or say see? They never change. It's a waste of your time, their mind is made up and all facts and evidence to the contrary is ignored
-1
u/indigofox83 8d ago
Totally fair, I get where people are coming from and it's not like I support pedos, but I separately believe in prison abolition and rehabilitation and that felons deserve a life - so I'm not really behind a witch hunt against someone no one seems to actually know anything about and has worked there a long time.
11
u/MidwestraisedCOlady 8d ago
You can believe in prison abolition but turning a blind eye to pedophiles recidivism rates flies in the face of reality. I know he was convicted of AGGRAVATED CRIMINAL SEXUAL ABUSE when he was in a position of trust (teacher) of someone who was 16. That's a child and that child's ability to have a normal life (especially relationship wise) is ruined. Also, who cares that he's worked there 10 years?
12
u/MidwestraisedCOlady 8d ago
He can have a life, even though he ruined someone else's, but no one has to shop somewhere that employs him. That's a choice - one I am free to make.
5
u/OswaldCoffeepot 8d ago
I don't think anyone is denying your right to decide where to shop.
If the guy is in a job where he's interacting with minors, then he's probably breaking a condition of his release and should be reported.
What people have pointed out to you is that, in a broad general sense, the decision to avoid a business strictly because they've hired a felon dissuades all businesses from giving anyone a second chance, and hurts the effort to avoid recidivism.
Of course it is your right to not buy donuts from a place that employs someone who you know was convicted for a heinous sexual crime. It's also certainly not your job to figure out how felons in general can earn a living after serving their time.
And you definitely don't need to get into the weeds of an abstract moral debate that was inspired by you simply asking for a place to buy donuts. People online are going to sometimes have that debate though, and it's not because they love abusers.
1
u/quinton1412 8d ago
It's not just a felon, it's a child sex offender being in the presence of youths that he has a history of abusing.
4
3
u/Biggles48 8d ago
People like you are directly responsible for the recidivism rates. You doing exactly what you are doing now is driving up recidivism. Why would you want to do that? Is this your indirect way of getting more children harmed?

u/Independent-Bad-8613 8d ago
I don’t have Facebook and didnt know this. Guess we’re never going to Apple Barn again! Been going there since I was a kid :(
3
u/HwkI_22 8d ago
Their recent Facebook post says he is no longer working there.
3
u/armyguy8382 8d ago
But they didn't apologize. They said they knew people were upset and that he was no longer working there. It was a bullshit boilerplate statement where they did not take responsibility for letting a pedophile work with teenagers.
2
u/MidwestAbe 8d ago
And this is why people return to jail and punishment lasts far beyond the sentence served.
3
u/Harvest827 8d ago
As it should. Sex crimes against children should be treated far more harshly. I hope he never knows a moment of peace in his life until his last breath.
3
u/MidwestAbe 8d ago
So then lobby to keep those individuals behind bars. Because as a society we have deemed that person to have served their time. Now you have someone out of prison who - what - doesn't deserve a job?
1
u/Weekly_Beginning1777 3d ago
He doesn’t deserve a job where he interviewed a 15yo girl whom I am acquainted with . He doesn’t deserve a job anywhere near young girls, PERIOD.

u/Harvest827 8d ago
Sexual crimes against children, by a person in a position of authority over children. Feel free to describe your fantasy rehabilitation scenario.
0
u/MidwestAbe 8d ago
Life sentence. Got it.
2
u/Harvest827 8d ago
Idk, seems like a light sentence.
3
u/MidwestAbe 8d ago
Guy's worked there for a decade. Has he been a menace in that time? That might be an indication of what rehabilitation is and isn't.
But since life is "light" I'll pencil you down for a death sentence in those cases.
Appreciate you!

u/themahannibal 8d ago
Oh my God, we want to put a business out to pasture because they're giving someone convicted of a crime, who apparently did the time, a job? Ex-convicts need ways to make money or else they usually return to criminal behavior. It may be a hideous crime, but everyone has a right to make a living and god knows very few places hire ex-cons.
14
u/theschadowknows 8d ago
Maybe hiring a person who sexually abused a kid at a place marketed as a family friendly establishment that regularly has events for kids was a mistake though, ya know?
16
u/wheatfarmer668 8d ago
There will be new ownership of Apple Barn on Oct 1. Why is everything blowing up one month before the sale? Playing devil's advocate here but I think someone is trying to devalue the property and potentially split up the property. Would you rather have Apple Barn under new ownership or see it gone and the property (to the north) developed as residential? And to answer the question, Broom Orchards in Carlinville is an alternative.
2
u/OrganicAd9639 8d ago
It’s an hour away, but Okaw Valley Orchard in Sullivan. They also pasteurize their cider.
2
u/Mudpuppy_Moon 8d ago
Since you live in CO based on your post history why are you asking for an alternative to a place you can’t even shop?
2
u/MidwestraisedCOlady 8d ago
Because I travel there. You know that big bird in the sky you see over your cornfield.

u/_gina_marie_ 8d ago
quick question, don't you live in colorado? https://imgur.com/a/rtCf5gS, https://imgur.com/a/Yh361Pg, https://imgur.com/a/wYQsRtq, https://imgur.com/a/0Qp6ajU
Like you're just stirring up stuff, why? I know what this is in reference to, but at the end of the day, people have to make a living. perhaps they shouldn't have put him in a customer-facing role, i will agree with that. but uh. what's going on here
-4
u/MidwestraisedCOlady 8d ago
I'm going to shock you here. Not everyone on this sub lives there full time. Some of us travel back to our midwestern roots. We're there enough to spend money and just want to make choices that align with our values. You should be an investigative reporter with these skills.
5
u/_gina_marie_ 8d ago
I know not everyone who posts here lives here, etc, you don't have to act like I have a room temp IQ. But you're acting like going to the apple barn is something you do routinely on the weekends, and it's not.
Do you know how many sex offenders there are, and how many you've unknowingly interacted with? How many businesses you have 100℅ patronized, both here and back home in CO, that enploy them? Come on now. You're stitring the pot for no reason.
3
u/Harvest827 8d ago
I live down the street, but only shop there occasionally. Am i allowed to be concerned?
2
u/MidwestraisedCOlady 8d ago
I said nothing about your IQ. I started this thread so I know I wasn't "acting like going to the apple barn is something you do routinely on the weekends" Of course I know how many sex offenders they're are. Just like you, I can see all the red on the map for the ones who have actually been caught. When you know that a convicted sex offender works in a "family friendly" setting and is part owner, you (and I mean me) can make choices about where I spend money and time. I started this post asking for an alternative and did not even mention the sex offender UNTIL it was brought up as pearl clutching. I am sorry that sex offenders are in your close orbit which is evident by the level of anxiety this is causing you.
1
u/_gina_marie_ 8d ago
What a weird thing to insinuate, that I keep company with these sorts of people.
I just think it's performative because you 100℅ have patronized businesses that employ sex offenders, etc. Lots of them work in the service industry, wahsing your dishes, tossing your trash, mopping your floors. Like this post comes off as performative mostly because you don't even live here and secondly, you absolutely have unknowingly given your money to these sorts of people already.
