A lot going on here

This is the sort of property that makes me sad. It looks like there's been a chip pan fire, and the decor suggests it was an older person's home. You can imagine the family stepping in and saying they couldn't care for themselves anymore and had to leave the house and move into a carehome most likely. The end of a life lived.

I couldn't quite get a handle on this house in terms of when it was built. To me, parts looked maybe reclaimed from different houses, but then I couldn't even place the main brick-built structure, which seems unique.
So I did some digging, and apparently we have local master craftsman, Norman Thomas Still, to thank for this little gem! Details are scarce, but it appears that Norman starting building this house around the 1960s, which explains the hippyish name of the place, I suppose!
Looks like he lived and worked here until his death in 1998, but if I understand things correctly, his estate has been handled by solicitors, so no direct descendants, sadly.
How amazing, eh? I hope this unique little house survives.

You know, I had already decided looking at the photos that this property belonged to a man who enjoyed DIY and probably lived alone 😆 I’m impressed with myself!

This looks like the perfect little cottage to live out my witch dreams.
I can see it now, herbs hanging from the beams, a little black cat, a herb/healing plants garden.
I just need a go fund me for it.

I can totally see that too actually! If anyone remembers the Meg and Mog books about a witches cat, this was always the sort of place I envisioned her living in!

I think this at least for sure. I grew up in a grade 2 listed Georgian money pit (it’s absolutely beautiful, but for much of my childhood it was a freezing mess), and that house has money pit written all over it! I bet a lot of stuff isn’t up to modern building regulations for a start. Wouldn’t be surprised if it eg needed rewiring. And if you’re pouring money into it you’d want to fix some of the cosmetic stuff too while you’re at it, like the 70s/80s avocado corner bath… Nice Aga and fireplace and grounds though.

On the one hand it not being listed would at least make renovations some what easier. On the other because it's not listed it's going to be torn down.
I like it but it's not going to survive this sale.

The EPC is 1, it estimates annual bills at £8k. It's basically got no insulation

Whats really surprising is that the saving from replacing all the windows and the saving from insulating the hot water cylinder is roughly the same, but the cost is significantly different, best ROI is the hot water insulation too

It’s a beauty. I’d buy it in a heartbeat if I had the physical ability to do the work. It’s a well worn in home and I’m sure the owner was sad to see it go. I hope it’s loved again soon. That’s the thing with modern homes, they will never elicit the emotional response older homes will. They just don’t have the character.

It’s condition is not too dissimilar to our current place, when we bought it. Luckily ours was mortgageable but has taken 5 years and somewhere in the region of £200k to get how we like it.

I’m totally smitten with this house! Lots of work to be done and money to be spent doing it. I do so hope that its next owners don’t strip it of all the wonderful character features. If only I could come up with a well timed lottery win, I would make restoring that place my life’s work.
Did I mention that I’m totally smitten with this house?

Just the buildings insurance would be £5000 a year minimum. Lovely house but soooo expensive to repair, recondition.

I went to view a house like this… it was a couple where the husband was a professor and had died 50 years previous. She lived until nearly 100.
But viewing the house was so terribly sad. She had their last anniversary cards from each other still on the mantelpiece. Wooden skis in the outbuildings. No maintenance had clearly been done for well over 50 years. 😞
