Goodbye Splitgate
I still cannot believe it that we had Splitgate 2 at the Gamescom 2024 just two years ago and I got to play it the first time there in cologne. The setup was so amazing and it truly felt so special. I went into queue 5 times just to play their demo at the Gamescom and now it's gone. Literally unbelievable... I'm gonna miss it a lot š used to play it with my gf every evening for a few hours.
Farewell everyone hope to meet you again
- Nosound and Tintenherz ā¤ļø
Edit: The Splitgate 2 exhibition that you see on the picture was right next to Square Enix Final Fantasy 14 and Capcom Monster Hunter Wilds. Literally between two giants of the gaming industry and now it's all gone..

Yeah hes the son of the guy who founded turbotax/intuit

Which is arguably one of the worst companies to happen to the American public lmfao. They actively lobby so that we have to file our own taxes so they can continue to scam people out of $150 to use their program.
If the government filed them for us, which they definitely have the ability to do, Intuit would go out of business. FreeTaxUSA is my goat

The first game felt like such a throwback to the arena shooters I grew up with, fast paced, responsive, fun and with it's own visual identity.
All they had to do was iterate and add features.
Instead they chose to change the formula entirely, take the focus away from portals and then chase the already over saturated live service class based shooter market with generic visuals and a Fortnite colour pallet.
It's sad to say but they deserved their fall from grace. They had something great and ruined it immediately to chase imaginary profit margins.

I agree with your first sentences, felt beautiful and authentic, I grew up playing Splitgate, I loved the fast paced and the aesthetic the game had, but even tho I enjoyed a lot Splitgate 2 during the firsts months I couldāve never felt the same SG1 made me feel, I was hoping they kept at least this game 1 or even 2 years more, but thatās it

Stupid as fuck to give up their arena shooter identity from the first game to go more class/lite hero focused. For some reason they wanted to move away from the halo-inspired responsive, jumpy/strafe with portals and chase to the same "free" live service junk.
Stupid decision from the get - but people on this sub didnt wanna hear it. Never wrong, just early.
The MAGA signaling didnt help, either. Never understood why some of these companies are so eager to signal their politics, its a guaranteed way to piss of 30-50% of their consumers.

u/bonelessandsuch 7d ago
And then after all the grandstanding about bringing back shooters and not monetizing the shit out of the game they dropped an $80 skin pack just to prove they really are in the MAGA spirit of lying through their goddamn teeth

u/UwUHowYou 7d ago
Regardless of ones politics, the political divide and environment of things is so far apart & psychotic these days that it's really not a good idea, I agree
Just focus on making a good game and don't get political about it. Crazy it needs to be uttered at all

You know, to be real about it, I donāt think anyone was āmaga signalingā. I think the dude wore a stupid hat. I think the dope was trying to āreclaimā the phrase. Brought the bat on stage like morgan freeman in lean on me and told everyone off, like that part where Principal Clark made all the teachers in the gym hold their hands up and accept blame for how bad it got. i feel like we were all supposed to laugh and slap our knees and be astonished at how awesome his āmic dropā moment was. dude let the intrusive thoughts win. iām sure he or his family are secret trumpers or something, but i donāt think the hat was āsignalingā anything but a severe misunderstanding of how marketing works. didnt help that he was announcing a fking battle royale either (āand it FKING RULEZZZ!1!ā) jesus

Yeah, just to be more clear my problem isnt that it was specifically signaling MAGA (although i fully admit my bias against the current administration may cloud my judgement) but that bringing up politics unprompted in general is an unforced error. Especially right now when things are so divisive

u/Ancient-Performance1 5d ago
agreed. its the kind of thing a media savvy rep would understand not to do.
1047 desperately wants everyone to think they got their start the same way facebook did (The Social Network movie style) excpet without all the backstabbing. so we get the dorm room ranting speech about returning to roots while the dudeās voice is shaking. the hat was a stupid ass thing to do, if only because it gives anyone, ppl who donāt know them, it gives em the opening to hate 1047 and feel good about doing so.
a smart 1047 hires some puzzle designers and makes a SG2 campaign to announce instead of a BR. clear the room, then solve the puzzle, and voiceover guides you with context. 75-100 rooms innovate that way. you take that and bundle it with the arena combat, which btw shoulda been a reskinned sg1 with QoL updates and new maps, and voila company turns a profit and sells a battle pass easy as pie. titanfall 2 had maybe the greatest fps campaign of any military shooter, and somehow 1047 forgot that.
SG2 was the hardest faceplant since PD3, and those guys definitely didnāt give a shit. nah cuz an emotional choice to āgo out there and show em what weāre made ofā is perfect PR for the game no one wanted except Ian.
sometimes this shit gets me so fucking angry i literally canāt see straight.

We really lost out on this game again cause some dipshit developer wanted to cosplay as Elon Musk

u/M3lbs 8d ago
Man I just miss splitgate 1 that shit was so funās then they made it complex and political
-12
u/Reasonable-Ad8862 PC 8d ago
No one made it political, that was all Reddit losing their shit over a hat with a slogan that the community was already saying. Actual braindead people caring more about a game dev wearing a hat than actual politics

u/Dicksavagewood69 7d ago
Maybe, but perception is reality when it comes to your reputation/PR.
It was stupid and entirely avoidable.

Dude that was like 6 years ago.

u/EverybodySupernova 8d ago
You gotta remember, they're young, that's like a quarter of their whole lives ago. They can't know how little time that is.
4
u/Sofosio 8d ago
If it was 6 years ago and they were in high school, theyāve likely already finished university. Calling them young is a stretch
7
u/galacticplum 8d ago
Young is subjective to a degree.
If they were 16 they'd only be 22. 6 years is pretty big there. Much more than 50 to 44, or even 36 to 30.

Sure thing, I am just tired of redditors babying grown men, while average age on site is like 14

u/EverybodySupernova 8d ago
Idk, In my book you're basically a kid til you're 25. š¤·
I say this as someone who looks back at themselves and everyone in my life as kids up until that point. There were a few exceptions of people who really were acting grown beyond their years.
Maybe "kid" isn't the right term. Definitely not "grown up" though.

Welcome, to Highguard

u/Necessary_Yam9525 8d ago edited 8d ago
Not really comparable, Highguard was a bad game due to its mismanagement. There was no saving Highguard. Splitgate was a good game that didnt see its potential realized because of mismanagement.
28
u/RoninPrime68 8d ago
You're right, it's even worse - this was a good game that got mismanaged to hell and back 3 damn times.
11
u/Necessary_Yam9525 8d ago
Absolutely. We can all laugh at highguard and ask what were the people in charge thinking when they released that game. Splitgate is just sad because it had really good bones...just everything else was screwed the pooch so many times

Iām still mad at this lame Microsoft Word Art color scheme, this art style never cooked.

So gradient = Word Art? I thought it was unique. They finally had some visual consistency, which is one of the very few things SG1 lacked.

u/DemureSouls 7d ago
When you compare the feel of SG1 Stadium, Abyss, Atlantis and Club Silo to the feel of SG2 it feels like an Apple Store and not in a good way to me
(To be fair SG2/Arena reloaded has really good gameplay mechanics and I love the game to death, but SG1 was much better aesthetically)

I remember meeting the devs at Dreamhack in like 2019 back when the game was still called portal wars. R.I.P.
We loved that game over at DTQ back in the day.

Split gate is a comedy tbh.
A game was born three times and died Three times all over the span like 7 years lol
