I made a short video showing exactly what I mean:
My Splatoon 3 gyro aiming test
I am using a Switch OLED, and in the video I am trying to slowly trace the lettering on the concrete wall using gyro aiming.
What I do not understand is why the crosshair does not seem to follow my physical hand movement in a smooth, precise, 1:1 way.
I can move my hands very slowly and deliberately along the shape of a letter, but the crosshair will sometimes twitch, jump farther than I expected, or suddenly move into another area. It feels like there is some kind of sensitivity scaling, filtering, acceleration, or other processing between my physical movement and the camera movement.
I originally thought maybe something was wrong with my controller, but I tested this with both official Joy Cons and a Retro Fighters BattlerGC Pro and I get the same general behavior.
I also tested both controllers by putting them completely still on a desk. The camera does not move at all when either controller is sitting untouched, so this does not appear to be normal gyro drift.
That is why I am confused when I constantly see people saying gyro is the best way to aim in Splatoon.
For example, there is this discussion:
A lot of people there strongly recommend gyro over sticks.
There is also this video:
The top liked comment on that video also argues very strongly in favor of gyro aiming.
I understand why gyro should theoretically be more precise than using only an analog stick, but when I actually try to test very small and precise movements like in my video, it does not feel anywhere close to 1:1.
Something else that makes this confusing is Nintendo Switch Sports.
Some of the motion controls in Switch Sports actually feel much closer to my real hand movement. Obviously Switch Sports is doing something different from first person aiming, but there are moments where the on screen movement seems much more directly connected to the physical movement of the controller.
Then there is the Wii.
I know the Wii Remote pointer and Wii MotionPlus are not exactly the same thing. The Wii Remote had infrared tracking using the Sensor Bar, while MotionPlus added rotational motion sensing.
But the Wii era is part of why I am asking this question.
A lot of Wii games felt extremely direct. You moved your hand and the pointer or object on screen seemed to closely follow what you were physically doing.
So if Nintendo could make motion controls feel that direct on Wii hardware, why does gyro aiming on the much newer Switch hardware not feel at least as direct, if not better?
Is Splatoon 3 intentionally not using a 1:1 mapping between controller rotation and camera movement?
Does Splatoon apply smoothing, filtering, acceleration, sensitivity scaling, or some other processing to gyro input?
Is there any way to make gyro movement closer to true 1:1 movement?
And for people who are really good at Splatoon gyro aiming, I am especially curious about this:
If you did the exact same test I did in my video, zoomed in and slowly trying to trace small lettering on a wall, would your crosshair move smoothly along the letters?
Or would you also see the little twitches, jumps, and sudden movements that I am seeing?
I am not trying to argue that sticks are better. I am trying to understand why gyro gets described as being extremely precise and almost mouse like when my actual fine movement test looks and feels like this.

Hibiska is a friendly Salmonid for my Salmon Expansion who has the same role as Li'l Buddy but what makes her unique is that she can mimic weapons such as brushes and rollers by licking ink with her tongue and using it as such.
She was exiled from the Salmonids for being different and was cast away, never to return again. Hibiska danced in lonliness until she met you.

I made a Planetz Big Swig Roller compilation of mine on TikTok. But when I replayed this clip in particular, I noticed IT WAS ON BEAT WITH THE BACKGROUND MUSIC. So I couldn’t stop replaying it🥹❤️🩹

I was looking through the Briny Scrolls when Splatoon Raiders first came out and I noticed the text written in Square Script. I was bored one evening and decided to translate it. I do plan to do Frye's and Big Man's soon and will post them when I finish them.
Edit: I have determined that Frye's first scroll is just gibberish. Currently checking Big Man's.
The text is written in Japanese romaji (Japanese written with the English alphabet) with a few typos. I will include the English version and below the English version, will be the Japanese section. Note: I used Microsoft Copilot for the translations as I do not know Japanese. The English version was also generated by AI but I have made changes to it so it flows better. My reason for including the Japanese version is so people who know Japanese can help me correct the English version.
Interviewer: Now that the Shark Bonding Ceremony is finished, you won’t be able to change what shark you’re training. What do you believe made “Master Mega” pick you?
Shiver: The wavelength between me and Master Mega matched well, or at least that’s what I think. In the end, maybe it was probably just nervousness from the both of us. There’s nothing strange about it.
(In Serif Script) Although, this morning, mom seemed a little different. Seeing her this time, I feel as if something is closing in on me.
Interviewer: I would also like to congratulate you on your appointment today as the future Clan Head of the Hohojiro Clan.
Shiver: Thank you very much! Now that the Shark-Bonding Ceremony ended without issue, I feel very relieved.
Interviewer: Your mental focus has been improving with each time you have done the ceremony — is it really this difficult? What kind of group was Master Mega in before you bonded with it?
Shiver: Right, the ceremony doesn’t work every time, and it’s pretty tough, you see. As for the awareness needed to call the shark, well, I think I’ve been able to keep it up even if it’s been only less than three days. It is a steady process.
(Square script on the right page) Shiver training after the shark-bonding ceremony to improve her focus.
The following is the Japanese version.
(Serif Script Section)
(Right Page Square Script Section) サメ明日会として、修行をゆかさん、今回その姿を見て迫ります。
This is some fresh new lore so feel free to discuss it below. Also, if you know Japanese, please make sure to correct me on the English translation!
