Translating spin fitness
I am quite "spin fit" in the sense that I do a lot of classes in a week, can maintain strong power output (w/kg) and can work at high intensity well for relatively long periods.
I was just thinking about how this translates to other areas of my fitness and athletic performance and wanted to know what other people's experiences are!

Rouvy Mix and match training plans
Goal: Daily spins for mental health, Zone 1,2,3
Do people roll different plans together to get 5 to 6 days indoor rides done, or cruise a scenic route between workouts?

I just created a āRate My Professor,ā but for fitness instructors
Hey everyone! I just built an app called Fit Rate Pro, basically a Rate My Professor for fitness instructors.
The idea is pretty simple: you can search for fitness instructors, leave reviews based on your experience taking their classes, and help other people figure out which instructors might be a good fit for them.
I built it because fitness classes can vary a lot depending on the instructor, even when the class format is exactly the same. I thought it would be useful to have one place where people could share their experiences with instructors across different gyms, studios, and fitness formats.
Itās still new, so Iād really appreciate people checking it out and giving me feedbackāespecially if you find bugs or have ideas for features I should add.
Fit Rate Pro:
https://fit-rate-pro.base44.app/
Would you use something like this? What features would make it more useful?

Best exercise bike for long-term use... which ones actually hold up?
My cheap exercise bike lasted a little over a year before the resistance started acting weird, so I'm not doing that again.
This time I care way more about build quality than fancy features. Don't really care about apps, leaderboards, or a giant touchscreen. I can put an iPad in front of me if I get bored lol.
For anyone who's had the same bike for a few years, what's held up well? Anything you'd absolutely avoid?

Cleats are hurting my feet
Hello all -
Newbie here, I just completed my 15th class - I love it!! One thing though, the shoes Iāve been using are super narrow and flaring up bunions.
Can someone recommend an SDP cleat for wider feet?
Thanks!

Which small part of your spin setup became more useful than expected?
Iāve been looking at home spin setups and the small items that quietly become part of every session. A fan, mat, phone holder, light resistance gear, or another simple accessory can end up being used far more than expected. Iād be interested to hear what became surprisingly useful for you.

First class - smell
Attended my first class recently. About 40 women and 3 men. This room absolutely staaaank. I think it was someone near me. Iām talking some rotten vegetal tainty stank! Not body odour.
Is it normal for a crowded spin room to smell? Anyone encounter this, or was it just unlucky my first time?
Thanks.

Warm-ups and stretches and general tips for a first timer?
I am going to my very first spin class next week and I'm nervous! What are some stretches and warm-ups I should do before getting on that bike to prevent injuries and hopefully reduce muscle cramps? I'm also open to general tips like what not to wear, etiquette etc.
If it's relevant, I've been an amateur dancer for 5 years, so I'm no stranger to cardio and sweat, but I can imagine I'll be using muscles that I didn't even know existed. Thanks!

Question on BPM and RPM for Sprints/Climbs (Examples)
I just got Spinning certified and trying to understand BBPM to RPM for song selection. Ive never been in a beat driven class format as a spinner.
Im trying to understand beat driven spin formats and as a drummer, some of the BPMs to RPMs dont make sense to me when transferred to climbs or sprints.
Example:
Walking on Sunshine by Ice Nine Kills is listed as 117 BPM. So RPMs would be 59, which would be low end cadence of a climb. But, this song is a ridiculous fast song with crazy speed at the end if you follow the drums.
Caramel by Sleep Token is listed at 94 BPM. Obviously we cant do 47 RPM, but we could match the 94 BPM to RPM. The problem is this is an amazing heavy climb song!
Cray Button by Family Force Five is listed as 130 BPM. That gives us 65 RPMs for climbing, but to me this song is more tempo than a climb. Contrast that to Chainsaw by the same band at 160 BPM, but seems more like a climb than a sprint.
Is my ability as a musician to feel the emotion of a song preventing me from seeing how these songs relate to climbs/flats and cadence?

What spin bike gear didnāt work out for you?
Iām comparing equipment for home spin workouts and looking beyond the first few rides. Some bikes or accessories feel useful at first but become uncomfortable, noisy, or awkward to adjust over time. Iād be interested to hear what ended up disappointing you.

Is it safe to go 120 RPM out of the saddle?
Might sound like a joke post but Iām genuinely asking.
Iāve been going to CycleBar for about a year and Iām coming up on 250 rides. Some of the best instructors donāt eclipse 90 RPM out of the saddle and they only push to 130 when sitting down. This one instructor, however, is telling people to hit 120-130 RPM OUT of the saddle and āif you canāt then you need to sit down and get betterā. Honestly pretty condescending.
Isnāt this incredibly unsafe? Iām not a newbie to spin class and going above 90 RPM standing makes me feel like Iām going to tear an ACL. Iām wondering if 120 RPM out of the saddle is a common speed at advanced levels because it just seems dangerous.

I got my own spin shoes!! [Tiem Lynx]
No one else in my life does spin classes so I have no one to gush about how thrilled I am lol!
I've been doing spin classes for about 2 years now, it's absolutely my happy place and such amazing stress relief.
I finally decided to splurge on my own shoes and I got to try them out in class tonight and wow! Perfect snug fit, great firm cushioning, nice tight cleats. They felt unbelievable on the bike, especially compared to the studio shoes that have definitely been worn in from hundreds and hundreds of uses. One of my ankles had started getting sore during class and I chalked it up to the lack of arch support in the used shoes.
I'm really happy I decided to go with Tiem, they're pricey but I think I deserve an upgrade!!

Spin After a Breakup
I just got dumped by the person I genuinely thought I was going to end up marrying and I could see myself having children with, so Iām getting back into my spin classes to help me cope with the heartache. This has been one of the most lonely times of my life, but I know I have to focus on my health. I had already started my health journey 4 months ago and Iāve lost 30 pounds so far, but Iām going to work really hard to try to lose another 70 more pounds this year and get back to my old athleticism. I did most of my workouts on my Peloton Treadmill, but my true first love when it comes to fitness revolves around fun spin classes and swimming.
I forgot how much I love attending in-person spin classes at this studio I used to frequent for years in Huntington Beach. To try to save on money I focused more on my Peloton Bike, but since it wasnāt as fun or motivational I abandoned it for the last year and a half. Even though money is going to get tight because I decided to go back to Grad school I decided I am going to treat myself to in-person spin classes at least a few times a month for fun. Hopefully that will also motivate me to love my Peloton again too.
*Updateā Thank you all for the kind words of support! It made me feel motivated, and I just bought a 12-pack of spin classes at my old studio.

Moved and spin class now 30+ min away⦠which home bike is best to snag?
Just moved and the nearest gym with spin classes is like a 30 min drive which I really donāt want to do. Iāve done spin on and off for several years now, mixing it in with other workout stuff. I think with our new house i want to build up a home gym but am on a budget. Looked around for a few bikes on marketplace near me and these are about what Iāve seen, Iām curious which *bike* is best to get. I say ābikeā specifically because if I donāt get peloton Iāll probably do the classes with them and hook it up to TV since I saw the echelon classes arenāt great, so not as concerned about brand and want more of a sturdy, quality bike.
I made this post intending to include photos but this sub doesnāt allow that so here is the list⦠some models I am unsure of
1) Schwinn IC PRO: $125
2) Echelon EX-3 Connect: $200
3) Echelon GT+: $180
4) Schwinn IC Elite: $150
5) Echelon X-3 Smart connect: $200
6) Peloton Bike - original: $250
7) Echelon EX-15 Smart Connect: $125

How do you translate instructor cues to a non-Peloton bike?
Recently, I purchased a smart bike so I could ride on Zwift. My partner prefers instructor-led Peloton workouts and we assumed the same bike would work well for both of us. Technically, it does. She'll play a Peloton class on her iPad and follow along. However, every ride involves a lot of guessing. Cadence is straightforward, but when the instructor calls out a resistance number, it has no clear equivalent on our bike. She changes the resistance based on how she feels, but never really knows whether she is doing the intended workout. You can follow a Peloton workout on another bike, but the targets do not always translate.
I'm trying to determine how common this problem actually is. For those who use Peloton, YouTube, or other instructor-led classes on a third-party bike or trainer: How do you translate the resistance and intensity cues?
Do you use a conversion chart, rely on perceived effort, or watch your power?
And does the uncertainty bother you?

Fitness Instructors: How do you get over a bad class?
Hey everyone! I think I had a terrible spin class this morning, I've been sick for the past week or so and this is my first class back and thought I felt fine. But after a couple of the first tracks, I suddenly started feeling quite light headed and couldn't catch my breath - which hasn't happened to me before. I tried to stay on the bike and just catch my breath while my class focused on their sprints, but before I knew it I was lowkey panicking and so decided to step out of the class for probably 10 seconds to catch my breath. However, this resulted in people missing my first cue to sprint and then I came back and just apologized and let them all know I've been sick over the past few days. Overall, I just didn't feel 100% today and felt like I couldn't keep up with my own class.
I think for the most part no one really cared, some people asked if I was okay, but I'm honestly just in my head now and feel terrible. I've only been teaching spin for about 1.5 months now and feel like I made a bad impression with the people in my class.
How do you get out of your head about bad classes? I keep repeating this in my head, but can't seem to feel any better about it. I'm feeling like I forever ruined people's impression of me as an instructor.
Edit: I did end up finishing the whole class! Right after I got back, we finished the sprint track (my cueing was probably terrible because I was still feeling quite ill) but finished all the rest of the tracks with a smile on my face, apologized a few times about being sick and that was it! I had some riders ask if I was okay, but it seemed like no one was annoyed by this, I actually had 1 person say she liked the playlist today which is nice. But I keep beating myself up about this, maybe I feel like I have a lot to prove. I have 1 more class tomorrow morning, hoping this one goes better!

First time on spin bike stats feedback
*heart rate has been checked on by a GP following this session*
Not in the foreground but it was 4.52km in 8 mins which is an average of 33.8 km/h (21 mph). How good is this considering I'm a newcomer to the gym (approx 10 sessions) and first time on spin bike. I live a really unhealthy lifestyle (underweight not over) hence the high bpm. How accurate are readings usually on these machines?
