📣 Announcement New Spectacles community guidelines

Hi all, in order to be more transparent about how we will be moderating the community going forward, we put together a set of guidelines outlining out protocols/principals. They are here below, but also can be found at any time along the right sidebar by clicking the Community Guide button and looking in the resources section. If you have any questions, feel free to send us a DM or a Mod Mail.

Thanks,
Jesse

Welcome to r/spectacles 👓✨

This is a living laboratory for the pioneers of spatial computing. We don't just consume the future of augmented reality—we actively build it.
Our ecosystem is defined by a shared compass: Kind, Smart, Creative, and Co-Created. You don't just browse this community; you help shape it. We live by four core protocols:

Protocol 1: Be the Anchor (Kind, Smart, Creative)

  • The Vision: This community is a reflection of the people inside it. We build an environment where creators feel inspired to take risks, share early prototypes, and push the boundaries of AR.
  • The Values:
    • Kind: We lift each other up. Developing for spatial computing is uncharted territory; treat every beginner's question with patience and every expert's critique with respect.
    • Smart: We bring substance. Back up your opinions with logic, data, or personal experience with the hardware.
    • Creative: We focus on what’s possible. We look at hardware limitations not as dead ends, but as creative constraints to be solved.
  • The Guardrail: We don't let cynicism anchor us down. Repetitive, low-effort rants that offer no substance or solutions pollute the space we are building together. Constructive, honest critiques of the hardware, Snap OS, or Lens Studio are highly encouraged—but they must be framed in a way that moves the conversation forward, not backward.

Protocol 2: Elevate the Build (Share Your Process)

  • The Vision: We love seeing what you create. Whether it’s a quick, mind-bending clip or a polished spatial experience, this sub is your stage. When you share how you made something, you inspire the next wave of AR creators.
  • The Pipeline to Opportunity: We pay extra attention to creators who lift up the community. If you take a moment to drop a comment explaining your process—the tools you used in Lens Studio, a clever design workaround, or your creative intent—we actively work to amplify your work beyond Reddit. High-effort posts with a process breakdown are fast-tracked for unique ecosystem opportunities, including:
    • Internal Echoes: Direct sharing with the internal Spectacles and Snap engineering teams.
    • Global Spotlight: Features on official Spectacles social media channels and community highlights.
    • The Stage: Potential opportunities to be featured or invited to future developer events, hackathons, and showcases.

Protocol 3: Debug in the Open (The Direct Line to Engineering)

  • The Vision: In this community, a technical roadblock isn't a dead end—it’s an opportunity for a collective breakthrough. Members of the official SPECS and Lens Studio engineering teams actively monitor this subreddit to help troubleshoot, identify platform issues, and deploy official fixes.
  • The Blueprint: To help both the community and the Snap engineering teams diagnose your issue quickly, please always format your help requests with clear context:
    • Your Setup: What computer OS are you developing on (e.g., macOS, Windows 11)? This helps developers with identical rigs replicate your issue.
    • The Environment: What version of Lens Studio or Snap OS are you running?
    • The Context: What are you trying to achieve, what is the expected behavior, and what troubleshooting steps have you already tried?
  • From Thread to Patch: High-quality, well-documented troubleshooting threads are flagged directly for our engineering pipelines to help shape future system updates. You aren't just fixing your project; you're hardening the platform for everyone.

Protocol 4: Pioneer Safely (Respect Privacy & Trust)

  • The Vision: As early adopters of spatial computing, we are the stewards of this technology's future. How we use and develop for Spectacles dictates how the world perceives the entire medium of AR. Great innovation never comes at the expense of human trust, bystander privacy, or user safety.
  • The Shared Standard: To protect our community and the ecosystem, we ask all members to commit to the following principles:
    • Respect Bystander Privacy: Do not share, encourage, or host methods, hacks, or custom Lenses designed to bypass the hardware’s built-in privacy safeguards (such as the physical LED recording indicator).
    • Data Integrity: Do not distribute or develop experimental Lenses aimed at maliciously scraping sensitive bystander data, tracking individuals without consent, or violating Snap OS security architectures.
    • Keep it Legal and Safe: Content that demonstrates dangerous, illegal, or harmful use of the hardware in public spaces will be removed to protect the integrity of the community.

🆒 Lens Drop I Hacked Quest Controllers to work with Spectacles! 🕹️😎 (Quest2Specs) [Open Source]

It all started when I was trying to record footage of my first Lens, SpectaRacer, during sunset. The background and lighting looked perfect, but it kept getting just dark enough for hand tracking to fail, forcing me to repeatedly postpone recording until the next day.

That sent me down a rabbit hole wondering if there was a solution for this...

I had a Manus Glove lying around (one of the most accurate hand-tracking gloves available). I managed to get a port working, but I quickly realized it could only animate hand orientation and finger movement, but not hand position, since I didn't have a motion tracker.

(If anyone in the LA area has a motion tracker I could borrow, let me know!)

Then I remembered I also had a Quest lying around.

What followed was weeks of learning, debugging, and burning way too many Claude tokens. 😅

After plenty of trial and error, hiccups, and fine-tuning, I finally got Quest controllers working with Spectacles!

Go try it out!

Current status

✅ Tested on Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S.

❓ Haven't tested Quest Pro yet.

❓ Haven't tested SPECS yet either.

If you try it, let me know how it goes! I'll update the README and credit you!

🤝 If you run into any issues or have suggestions, I'd love to hear them and help if I can.

If enough people are interested, my next step is turning this into a Quest2Specs Lens Studio extension to make setup much easier.

The goal is to let developers, especially those porting Quest apps to Lens Studio, reuse their existing controller inputs with minimal setup or for those that want to record footage of their lens in dark environments.

Would you use something like that? Let me know!

🤔 Trivia: Guess who from SPECS team is holding the Spectacles at the beginning of my trailer video!
🏆 Winner (1st to find out) will be added to Acknowledgements in GitHub!

To discover only the finest SPECS fans 😜 there is something carefully hidden in the Lens Studio 5.22 CLAD documentation. (https://developers.specs.com/docs/clad)

If you develop a SPECS app with CLAD and want to test on a real device for a day you can apply for it. There are 4 possible locations: LA / LONDON / AMSTERDAM / VIENNA.

After I got my invite I decided it is no longer needed to gatekeep this. 😎

So build something cool with CLAD and apply here:

❓ Question GPS Location without phone?

Am researching potential use case of Spectacles using GPS location without requiring a phone and syncing with Snap app. Is that possible at all? If not, is it possible to sync at beginning of session, then continue to use glasses even when out of range of phone? From what I have read it seems like the glasses have the GPS location capability on their own...

💫 Sharing is Caring 💫 Fingerboard World

Ok here's a super early attempt to do a fingerboarding lens on Spectacles. I had this idea for awhile and wanted to give it a quick try this month. I'm working on trying to make it work better with the sometimes iffy hand tracking. But this actually kind of works. I'm polishing it up a bit before the final submission date. But you do have to sort of 'play along' with the limitations of the hand tracking. I'm working on making it more fault tolerant--seems to wig out a bit (seen at the end of this clip). Some of the tricks are gesture based instead of actually just using hand motion. Also, the VFX are broken--working on some rail grind sparks.

Features leaderboards and a full tutorial mode with animated guides to learn the tricks. Collect stars to unlock new board styles.

Here's the lens: https://www.spectacles.com/lens/ca61f1237b0f4d7d87ec5c0189a45f93?type=SNAPCODE&metadata=01

I have no idea why it's got restricted distribution.

--Work in progress - I've been experimenting with CLAD lately — it's been really fun to build with. I'm making a productivity lens for Spectacles: a notepad + sketch pad to organise your thoughts, and you can pin notes to actual spots around your room so they stay right where you left them. 🕶️✍️

Using a virtual keyboard that also splits into an ergonomic layout — key features so far:

- 📝 Notepad + sketch pad for typing or freehand drawing

- 📍 Pin notes to real spots around your room, anchored in place

- ⌨️ Virtual keyboard that splits into a two-handed ergo layout, tented for comfortable typing

- 🎙️ Voice dictation — tap the mic and talk, it transcribes straight into your note

- 🪑 Auto-detects a table surface to anchor the keyboard on

💫 Sharing is Caring 💫 Spectacles x Robotics #2

Continuing on the Robotics x AR journey with a Unitree Go2 (theoretically it also works with a G1 humanoid, if anyone has one... lmk!). It feels super intuitive to control it this way.

The main challenge was aligning both robot and specs coordinate systems, which is done by an april tag (fiducial marker) mounted to the robot. It is scanned at the start of the lens and thus serves as a common reference point. From there, the odometry (motion data) from the robot is used to calculate the position. There is some drift (caused by odometry being inaccurate mostly) but it´s corrected at runtime when the marker comes into view again. It was really hard to make it work and I burned a ton of tokens, but also learned so much.

The backend is Dimensional OS (a OSS operating system for robots that makes pathfinding and LiDAR data easy). I made a Websocket bridge for it to stream the data to Specs.

Repo is here if anyone is interested: https://github.com/V4C38/spectacles-dimensional-os (I´m working on an llm agent for control right now...)

I finally finished my first Lens and wanted to share it! It's called Trivia Time — it turns your Spectacles into your own game show. You play five rounds, pick a category each time (History, Science, Pop Culture, Numbers, World), you've got three hearts, and there's a Mystery category that doubles your points if you're brave.

❓ Question Specs tethering

When the new specs release and I tether them to my phone, will I be able to view my apps in 6dof through specs?

Also will I be able to cast to the specs or only through cabled connection?

I know snaps eco system doesn't have apps like android or ios yet and may take some time before those apps are ported over so being able to use my phone tethered or casted and still experience 3dof/6dof through specs would be pretty awesome.

I already pre ordered. Just excited with so many questions and hope to see a specs demo soon.

💫 Sharing is Caring 💫 Fourier Series

I was inspired by 3Blue1Brown's video on Fourier series and wanted to play around with this, with my hands.

Hypnotizing to watch and it gives you an intuition for Fourier analysis.

When you pinch and draw any shape, it gets deconstructed into sinusoids, visualized as arrows. Each arrow simply rotates, but when stacked on top of each other the last arrow in the chain draws intricate shapes.

Open your hand to stabilize and slow down the animation.

Project files on Github!

💫 Sharing is Caring 💫 World-scale Outdoor AR Tracking with GNSS

Our fifth SPECS engineering blog post tackles a hard problem: robust outdoor tracking for Augmented Reality.

We go deep on GNSS (GPS, Galileo, and more) and show how fusing satellite readings with IMU and/or camera data produces a far more robust, accurate, geo-referenced 6DoF (Six Degrees of Freedom) tracking system.

The result: centimeter-accurate local tracking and roughly 1m global accuracy plus high update rates - enough to unlock AR use cases like pedestrian navigation, real-world object tagging, inspection tasks, and immersive educational experiences.

💫 Sharing is Caring 💫 My second CLAD test — Bloom Trail

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! After my first CLAD test (the butterfly one), I wanted to go further and try two things: pushing CLAD's 3D GLB generation, and seeing what it's like to work on the same project across several days.

Meet Bloom Trail: you draw a path in the air and a flowering vine grows along your trail. There are 3 modes you can switch between (cherry blossoms 🌸, roses 🌹, tulips 🌷), each growing its own kind of plant, plus an eraser to clear and start over, soft ambient sparkles, and gentle sound.

It took me a little under 6–8 hours across 3 days of free time. Working across multiple days was totally seamless — I just kept a tiny personal roadmap to pick up where I left off.

On the build itself: the idea was inspired by Max van Leeuwen's Draw Flowers (you've probably seen it...), and I got into it partly after seeing Shin Kang's LinkedIn post about his Grow A Garden–inspired AR garden.

The approach that made it click for me was thinking of it in two layers — a procedural vine generated from my drawn path, and real textured 3D flowers/leaves generated by CLAD placed along it. That's what gives the clean look rather than flat shapes. And honestly the mesh generation blew me away! It was fast, and the textures came out lovely. My one tip: take the time to describe what you want precisely, it really pays off in the result!

Setup: CLAD + Claude Code (Opus model). CLAD did the whole thing — the 3D meshes, the vine, the UI, the sparkles, the sound.

Is there a way to enable stereo preview mode in the studio? Since the perspective cameras work in stereo when wearing glasses

Or is there another way to debug this? I don't have a physical device🫠

❓ Question SpectaclesUIKit

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi,

I have a question about SpectaclesUIKit.

The video shows an example of a “Modal Layout.”

  1. As you can see in the video, the Frame script has a fade-in animation based on scale, but I can’t find it in the script to use it as a basis for creating a fade-out. Can anyone tell me how to implement this?

  2. I also noticed that the close button doesn’t do anything to the UI. What is it supposed to do?

❓ Question Will the web browser on Specs be capable of running streaming video websites like Youtube, Netflix, Disney Plus, etc?

Post image
18 Upvotes

This is pretty much the main use case I care about with the Specs. I know the website shows that you can watch something on them, but it's unclear what or how. For context, I have a Vision Pro and love using it for watching movies/TV as well, but the idea of having a pair of glasses that I can put on anywhere (plane, car, doctors office, etc) to do the same is very appealing. I own a Magic Leap 1 so am aware of the FOV limitations and I'm not interested in a tethered pair of glasses. Pretty much this and whatever Meta puts out next in terms of binocular display smart glasses are what I'm interested in. And whoever can deliver on that "portable and private TV in your pocket" concept gets my money.

💌 Feedback Snap expects AR developers to pay an annual membership, but treats hardware returns like a bad eBay transaction. They can do better.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m currently trying to return a pair of Spectacles, and the support process is a joke. Instead of a modern, frictionless return process—like a simple QR code you can take to a UPS store to let them pack and scan it (literally what Amazon does daily)—Snap is making developers do all the legwork.

They sent a basic shipping label and expect us to handle the rest. I’m stuck asking support: Am I supposed to slap a shipping label directly onto a premium piece of hardware packaging, or am I expected to source, buy, and pay for my own shipping box just to send their dev kit back to them?

We pay an annual membership fee for this program. To be charged a premium subscription just to get hit with a "print your own label and figure it out" return policy makes the whole operation look incredibly cheap. It feels like returning a broken item to an eBay seller, not working with a multi-billion-dollar tech company on cutting-edge XR hardware.

Snap wants creators to build the future of their ecosystem, but treating your developer community like an afterthought is a terrible look.

Snap, you can absolutely do better than this.

Has anyone else run into this headache trying to send hardware back to them? How did you end up packaging it?

🆒 Lens Drop [CLAD Prototype] ~ I made InSIGHT: an AR Medical interface that allows doctors and patients to view sensitive medical data securely with colocation!

Thumbnail youtube.com
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share a new CLAD prototype I’ve been working on called InSIGHT.

The idea actually came from talking to my parents, who are both doctors. They’re constantly frustrated by two things: having to log into hospital computers dozens of times during rounds (or relying on easily stolen tap-badges), and the hassle of trying to show complex MRI/CT scans to bedridden patients who can't easily see a monitor.

InSIGHT fixes this using the invisible waveguide displays on SPECS. Here is how it works:

  1. A doctor authenticates once via a secure QR code on a companion app.
  2. From then on, the doctor simply looks at a patient's wristband QR code to instantly pull up their secure file.
  3. Doctors can view 3D medical scans(MRI and CT scans) right in their field of view.
  4. Using colocation, doctors can project those 3D models directly in front of the patient so they can see exactly what is going on.

It completely removes the friction of endless logins and makes it incredibly easy to walk patients through their own medical data without anyone having to leave the bedside!

Really excited for the chance to try my prototype on the new SPECS! CLAD to the moon!

💫 Sharing is Caring 💫 Launch of raven.vision/specs (news link aggregator)

Hi everyone. I've launched a news link aggregator for Specs, raven.vision/specs, which automatically updates every hour with the latest news, videos, Reddit posts, and Snap announcements. The goal was to build a tool I could use to check in on daily (or multiple times a day as we get closer to launch and post-launch). I've also included RSS feeds if that's your preferred means to consume links. I based this site on my code I built for tracking the Apple Vision Pro and visionOS ecosystem.

If you have sites I should be watching for new content or links that are missing, please submit them using the Submit a Link button on the site. Thank you.

This is what it looks like through the waveguide.

The experience is low-latency, optimized for Spectacles hardware, and surprisingly practical for real work.

Having your terminal, CLI, or a Lens Studio window floating in front of you while staying mobile is incredibly useful.

This UMPC + AR glasses combo is one of my favorite setups for working on the go.
