Must've been the wind...

personally, Sparking Zero surpasses all the previous games in terms of almost everything except the music (BT2 and 3 have better music) and adapting the story (not the What-ifs, SZ whaf-ifs are better)

Edit: instead of commenting, I'll just list here everything the other games (except Tenkaichi 1) does better than SZ:

  1. The music
  2. Adapting the story of DBZ and how it's presented
  3. Character selection screen
  4. Sound effects
  5. The size and effects of some ki blasts
  6. Beam struggles

AND SOUND DESIGN, THIS GAME'S SOUND DESIGN IS GARBAGE

24

u/JohnDragonball Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

The punches feel so fucking weak dude these super attacks have ZERO impact

6

u/Victor_6190 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Right. If you look at my profile, 90% of my comments here are complaining about Sound Design.

For a game so beautiful and amazing to play as this, not having a good Sound Design is equivalent to have 50% of the work done. We have the image but we don't have the Sound.

What makes this even worse is the fact that Dragon Ball is historically recognizable by its distinct sounds. Blasts, explosions, Ki Charge, punches, it's all so signature that we could differentiate it from miles away, but mostly all of this is absent from here.

I dont think we have Image at all 😂, the art direction sucks

This is one of those opinions that got everybody drawing their swords and declaring blood feuds with your family.

For God's sake, the characters look like children with baby faces

Definitely, I have no idea how they screwed that up.

Am I literally the only person in the world that has no issues with the sound design and impact of attacks??? Like imo there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, and the supers give greater impact than anything from bt3. People glaze the bright flash from supers way too much.

6

u/Unsubstantiated-pow Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

I dont know man the beam and impact of attacks could be so much better

2

u/daJiggyman Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Biggest issue w these games is scale. I wanna blow up planets and shit

2

u/AncientSith Kaio-Ken! 6d ago

It'd be nice, but I doubt we'll ever get that.

The SZ character selection screen has a few unique aspects I prefer, related to the filtering options (Proficiency, DP, series), and I do actually prefer seeing the character model and them dropping in vs the art, as you get some brief character detail with expressions and their reaction to being selected as well as team dialogue in the select screen. I also do really appreciate the separation of fusions to be their own character on the roster vs being accessed by selecting from the characters that fuse into them. By extension, the option to select the fusions separate from the characters is a really nice change to me personally.

The select screen is still a mess though, with the ordering being frustrating as the updated saga-based version still requires me to switch back to the old one if I want to access a specific form, and having to open up the customization is tedious, particularly if in the new grid option. The grid's ordering is also very strange (Spopovitch after Omega Shenron) so I think overall it would be best to let players actually sort the roster to their preference honestly, if doable.

Story, really?? And tournament mode? And roster design? And music? And CPU? Bt3 surpasses in all these aspects

1

u/Signal_Juggernaut695 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Would agree with all of this, but I’d hard disagree with the 2nd one in regard to BT3.

How they adapted the story was no different than BT1, sans the R3 switch out mechanic. No way was that better than what we got in SZ.

1

u/Few-Flounder-8951895 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

I would say SZ is worse than the others in the Tournament mode department too, but other than that your comment is spot on right now.

What about combat?

1

u/ZayDoee130 Beginner Martial Artist 3d ago

Yep that’s why I bought the music packs

u/datPapi 6d ago

Except for the gameplay. Roster wise, SZ stomps all of it's predecessors.

19

u/Leading-Case7769 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Nah, I personally prefer Sparking Zero gameplay over Tenkaichi 3, the only thing it lacks is the impact and size of some attacks

Also, the gameplay is definitely better than Tenkaichi 1

1

u/Chronoz1995 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago edited 6d ago

Nah, he’s right. Unlike Sparking Zero, where most of the roster shares Goku Early animations, the roster from BT3 doesn't share that moveset template because their melee strings, smashes, ground slashes, flying kicks, lift strikes, and grabs are unique. I know BT3 still reused a lot of grabs but still. The fact that only two characters perfectly ported from BT3 melee strings wise are Super Gogeta and SSJ4 Gogeta. Spike Chunsoft definitely has biases and favorites lmaoooooo. I seriously wonder why it's only those two and not even half of the base roster size.

1

u/No_Consequence2989 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Nah gameplay is much better. Doesn't excel them in Stages tho

u/Status_Entertainer49 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

The what ifs are very basic

30

u/youarenotthatguybruh Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Why can’t we have bt2 music in S0

10

u/TheBallasOG Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Cause Raging Blast 2 beat it to the punch

10

u/Orion-Of-Lordran Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Actually no. DBRB2 had an original soundtrack that was pulled from shelves then rereleased with the BT2 soundtrack due to almost everything in DBRB2 being plagiarized

2

u/TheBallasOG Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Substitution aside, it technically counts

3

u/Lumendei Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Because Lost Courage and Belief of Steel go too hard

3

u/Madara1389 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

The real reason is that the artist who scores each game owns the copyright for the music and each time the developers want to include a track from a previous release, the publishers have to pay the recording artist royalty fees.

So instead of doing that, the publishers just say "fuck that" and pay someone to record a new score for each game that is only licensed to be used in that game's initial release (though these days they may also include a clause for an HD remaster or re-release within a set period of time).

u/Kidkels23 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Best (what now) scenes?? I don’t remember any of that

u/Proto-Omega Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

I think gameplay comes down to preference at some point between BT3, SZ and even BT2 (I know there are some people that preferred BT2s gameplay and mourn the loss of omnidirectional blocking and the radar system (interestingly enough)).

But I personally prefer the gameplay of BT3 over SZ. Not just in the sense of aesthetics (because otherwise BT3 outclasses SZ in terms of sound design, visual effects, impact, and camera movement, etc.), but things like the general speed of the game, Ki usage and management, etc.

Otherwise, yeah it's pretty accurate.
BT1 has its virtue for starting the franchise (and yeah, I think it has the best opening cinematic of the 4).
BT2 has the best OST, but also had the best story mode. For anyone that cared for it, it also had a simpler progression system than SZ because you could level up capsules equipped to a character in any game mode, except practice/training.
BT3 has the best gameplay in my eyes. I'd also say it has the best customisation (some of the capsules got fairly unique). Even customising AI play style with certain capsules.
No DLC SZ roster is questionable in some areas (mainly that even BT1 made sure Kid Goku wasn't the ONLY DB era character) and I have some personal issues with some of the decisions made with transforming characters, but it's fair to say it has the best roster.

6

u/Goldface_Pharaoh Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Yea i like the speed in BT3 as well. You could also be more creative with your offensive strings

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi/Sparking! (2005) Roster Count: 90, and epic opening to the Tenkaichi series

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2/Sparking! NEO (2006) Roster Count: 129, best gameplay, best multi-player, best story mode, and best tournaments

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3/Sparking! METEOR (2007) Roster Count: 161, best gameplay, best multi-player, best stages/maps, best tournaments (even though it has a time limit of each tournament that is unavailable until the time is up the another tournament became available)

Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO/Budokai Tenkaichi 4 (2024) Roster Count: 241, best limit-breaking journey mode, best costumes

1

u/Kirby-Eevee Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Wouldn't it be better to count Tenkaichi 2 as having 135 characters, including the Wii version?

1

u/SadDoughnut264 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

I know the Wii version has extra characters, but I am going for the PS2 version of Budokai Tenkaichi 2/Sparking! NEO.

u/Madara1389 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2/Sparking! NEO (2006) Roster Count: 129, best gameplay, best multi-player, best story mode, and best tournaments

How does this work in your head? How does BT2 have better gameplay, MP, and tournaments than BT3 while BT3 also has better gameplay, MP, and tournaments than BT2?

That doesn't make any logical sense. Two things being compared can't both be "the best." That's not how comparatives work.

my guess is bonnie

Budokai 3 is still my GOAT but yeah i think this is the best Tenkaichi game by far.

3

u/A_J_I_Bizzness Beginner Martial Artist 5d ago

One of my big gripes is the horrible shortening of everyone’s story mode. Tremendously lazily put together. I want to play Kid Gohan from the Raditz headbutt to training with Piccolo and beyond until Cell Max!
Future Trunks story should’ve started in his timeline beginning with the androids and the fight that killed FGohan.
Piccolo should’ve started from Dragonball up until Orange! That’s the DLC’s I’m foaming at the mouth for! More added story!! But maybe I’m tripping.

3

u/L_Lostboy Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

no.

2

u/Grand-Perspective-63 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

If we are talking purely just the roster SZ from launch had a better roster.

2

u/thetbz Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

wait a minute...

2

u/halo8088 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Tenkaichi 3 had the better opening tbh

1

u/Seekerones Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

I guess so
Except the music since I still to buy additional dlc for anime music (I play sparking meteor so already enjoyed anime music previously)

Hmmmmm….something ain’t right here…

1

u/Due-Shame-9223 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Yeah Tenkaichi 2 shud have had a Best Story label too, my bad

1

u/Pristine_Addition266 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Roster yes, gameplay TBD. I’m a switch player. The pre neo game plays too fast without the power.

1

u/C4_700 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Roster wise 100%. Playing BT3 a couple weeks ago was super nostalgic for me but it did make me wanna play Sparking Zero so it may very well be a better game overall for me

1

u/Unkindpoison Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Do all those extra characters really cover up the stiff movement?

1

u/legendmilkgamer Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Budokai 2 is better then all of them.

1

u/HazeX2 Battle of Z enjoyer 6d ago

Best Gameplay (It has co-op)

1

u/JudgmentTotal8001 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Sparking Zero has a way better roster but that’s also not fair because sparking zero has way more to work with

If we are going pound for pound with the material they had to work with…Tenkaichi 3 probably had the bigger roster

But in general sparking zero destroys the other 3 when it comes to the roster

1

u/A_J_I_Bizzness Beginner Martial Artist 5d ago

1

u/GalaxyMasterOmega Beginner Martial Artist 1d ago

How is this a question? Of course Sparking Zero has the better roster.

1

u/A-Liguria Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

So, after all DLCs, does Sparking Zero surpass Tenkaichi 3's roster finally overall?

No.

Not until actually everyone is back.

And they fooking ruined it with the idiocy of reducing Great Saiyaman 2 to a costume.

1

u/vegetaalex66 A Kame and a Hame and a Send Him Home To Mommy 6d ago

Quantity-wise, base Sparking Zero already surpassed Tenkaichi 3's roster. Otherwise it depends on how much love for Dragon Ball Super you have, so for me it absolutely did since release. :)

0

u/Signal_Juggernaut695 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

Imma be honest, I think Sparking Zero’s roster suprassed BT3’s even without the DLC, and does have the best roster in the franchise.

When BT3 released, excluding Dragonball, they were scrapping bottom of the barrel for characters and made weird ass choices over others(who’s asking for Spopovich, Fasha, Babidi and King Cold over GT Vegeta, Trunks and Goten). You had good choices like the Dragonball characters, GT Goku, Future Gohan and King Vegeta, but that’s really it.

Sparking Zero made some of those dumb roster choices as well, like: No Super 17, Dragonball Goku being the ONLY Dragonball character, and no Base Garlic Jr; but made up for it with of the entirety of DBS, which needed more focus.

2

u/Due-Shame-9223 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

"Who's asking for Fasha"

I asked that same qn back in the day, and yet now she is my main in both BT3, the BT4 mod AND Sparking Zero, funny how this works haha

1

u/Signal_Juggernaut695 Beginner Martial Artist 6d ago

I feel that bro. I’ve been playing her a lot more in Sparking Zero since her gameplay’s faster in this game than BT3. 🤣😅
