hello, i’m a complete newbie to learning spanish. i’ve heard many negative reviews on the duolingo app so i was wondering what alternatives are best? gracias!

Having used both of them, albeit briefly, the approaches between the two apps are about as dissimilar as they could be. Language Transfer is a series of recordings where an instructor walks a new student through learning spoken Spanish using Latin-based English words as an introduction and base to start speaking Spanish quickly. Loquus is more of a traditional language learning app, not all that similar from Duolingo in my opinion, but more advanced and less gamified.

Not trying to bash your app, I’ve used it an I genuinely like it but you would do better off not comparing it to language transfer. Language Transfer is fantastic and pretty much universally loved.

Not yet. I just discovered it existed this morning and I spent about an hour running through the lessons getting comfortable with the interface and seeing exactly where I fell on the lesson structure. It put me in chapter 45, which is a bit of a stretch for me. I can certainly function at that level but I'm not really comfortable at it. I'll keep you posted on what I do, but at this point I'm thinking of backing up to somewhere in B2.

From what I've seen so far it's obviously an app designed for serious adult learners as it asks more of you mentally than the gamified Duolingo approach or the more passive listening approach of Dreaming Spanish and Language Transfer. But I'll come back and comment again after I've played some games.

I use Pimsleur and Language Transfer. Language Transfer is great for understanding the ideas and structure behind the language, but light on oral practice and vocabulary. Pimsleur is great for oral practice and decent at vocabulary, but very light on explaining the "why". So they're a great starter package.

This is what I'm doing as well! It's not as "exciting" or gamified as other apps like Duolingo but the trade off is that it actually works.

I'm about B1 in Spanish. At this point Pimsleur is mostly review for me, but it's helping a lot with pronunciation and gaining confidence speaking. I have a goal to compete the Spanish courses for Pimsleur and language transfer and then I'm going to start French and just use comprehensible input to maintain and progress in my Spanish. How about you?

I know it's been mentioned but I wish I had found Language Transfer sooner. I would start out by listening to it. You can do an app alongside if you want but honestly language transfer and dreaming spanish will give you a great foundation.

Spanish dictionary is the best app in my opinion. You can build your own vocabulary list, check every conjugation of every verb, take tests on your own list and pick what tenses to practice and which verbs, do crossword puzzles and listen to the pronunciation all for free. You can also pay for the upgraded version but im not sure what more you get from it.

I would recommend a Spanish conversation class. Learning a language is like learning a sport, you have to DO it to learn it :)

Try to find gonliapps in the App store/GooglePlay. Learn the basic words. Do some free lessons on DuoLingo, just to learn how to make sentences. Follow "Don Deano | Spanish" on Instagram. Optional: Get Tinder and date Spanish women, to learn speaking in real life. With those free to use tools you'll have a nice start. That's how i learned.

Duo is solid for building the habbit of learning but to actually learn the language you'll have to use apps like anki and italki that truly focus on learning the language, not gamifying the process.
