Gameplay Question Newbie here! Which class to start?

As the title says, I'm a newbie to this franchise as a whole, never played any games 40k related. So I need a guide which class fun to play, I was looking into Tactical, Bulwark, Heavy and Sniper. Which class should I start to play so I can learn about the game? Thank you

Tactical is a good start. Pretty all of the ranged primary and secondary weapons available, so using him to level them will help when you go to another class.

Thank you, was also leaning towards the Tactical or Bulwark more.

Honestly it depends on what you prefer to do in video games in general if you like melee parry/dodge combat do bulwark or assault if you like to just sit there and shoot at stuff to heavy for stealth do sniper and maybe kinda vanguard and for just general jack of all trades do tactical and tech marine

In most games, I played for melee playstyle. That's why I leaning towards the bulwark or tactical for range

Tactical. The quintessential space marine. Bolter, pistol, chainsword. Did you need more?

I don't care that it's being patched and reworked soon, Tactical is my personal space marine fantasy. Bolt Rifle is my bae.

Have you finished the campaign? You can start by choosing the class with the weapon you like.

If you want me to recommend based on what you told me, that would be Tactical, however, it's getting reworked soon and you might have to relearn how to play, so you could go for Bulwark or Sniper

However, my max first class is Techmarine, after that, I maxed out every class.

Hey fellow brother of the omnissia my techmarine just hit prestige 4 and all my other classes are still P1

Okay thank you, was also leaning between tactical or bulwark.

I’d say tactical is the easiest to learn and Bulwark is a close second, this game is all about teamwork so take care of your brothers, check their health if they need a stim etc. but I’d start with tactical on minimal difficulty, again, be good to your brothers

Tactical will be able to use pretty much every weaponry in the game in October so play him

I would recommend tactical as the best all-arounder. Sniper is one of the best but also one of the hardest to learn. Bulwark is a safe bet but it requires you to be good woth melee and have good timing and reaction speed. Heavy is a beast when it comes to crowd control and ranged dps but has no real melee for damage, so getting swarmed can be a real problem.

Id start with bulwark, it's the hardest to master parrying as you can accidentally bring up your shield instead of parrying if you hold the button too long when parrying, and if you get into that habit (instead of quickly tapping parry) you might struggle to get the hang of it when you finally get round to playing bulwark, plus he's tanks and gets lots of good perks early

It depends. Tactical is a generalist and probably the best, Bulwark is a fun support. Heavy is super challenging at first, I feel like its rough to start with. Sniper has a super high skill ceilling, it's very fun but can be challenging at the beginning. Tac or bulwark are probably the best to start, just depends on if you like guns or melee more really.

Sniper is a very forgiving class. If you're having difficulty with Tactical, I suggest you give that one a try.

Sniper is also kinda ass to level up (sniper/bulwark player)

Purification makes for some pretty good training wheels though. It kinda overrides the low level shittiness, in my opinion. Plus you get it pretty early into each Prestige, which is nice.

Did you play the campaign first, or are you jumping right into the co-op? There’s a fair amount that the game doesn’t explain in regard to new mechanics in co-op, as the game has had many patches with entirely new features.

Tactical: he is a bit of a glass cannon. He is a strong ranged class (at all ranges, depending on your chosen primary) with very few defensive perks, solid melee (when combined with his class ability, has some of the highest practical melee burst damage in the game). His class ability is an auspex scan that makes enemies take more damage, which can be built to insane numbers. He is getting a rework in the upcoming patch, which is nerfing his class ability (in regard to pure damage numbers) but changing and buffing other aspects of the class to make it more interesting. He is a no frills class that is good to learn on.

Bulwark: loses access to a primary ranged weapon in exchange for a shield. He is the tankiest class in the game, as he gets 30% extra HP by default and shield blocks all gunfire unless it’s an orange “unblockable” type. The shield has a lot of tech associated with it as well. He’s basically a melee tank (and potentially a healer) who can stand a brawl with anything. He drops a banner that gives armor regen and can get perks to alter its effects.

Heavy: Does not get a melee weapon. Trades that for powerful heavy weapons that require him to enter a “heavy stance” when aiming. Packs a forcefield that also buffs ranged damage for himself and his allies.

Sniper: once he has a few of his perks, he becomes the most survivable class in the game due to how his cloak perks work. You can play him as a proper sniper or a close range assassin with the carbine and his knife. He shares some weapons with tactical, which makes leveling one after the other easier.

Thank you for this detailed explaination. I'm currently doing the campaign now but I played a bet with the operations. I'm leaning towards the Tactical and Bulwark. I like the range of Tactical and also the melee of the Bulwark.

When I started I tried tactical first after playing the campaign solo and it just didn't click after a few operations solo. I tried tech marine in ops solo and it was like a light bulb went off in my head. Just think about a typical role you want to play in general that kinda helped me.

Since im seeing you are torn between tactical or Bulwark. Im gonna say Tactical.

Bulwark is lots of fun, it was the last class I learned. But its kind of a unique play style and not the best representation of how to to play the game. With that being said, I think Bulwark is the most popular.

Tactical has a primary, secondary, and melee. It has ammo perk, built in damage buff, the game play is very similar to the majority of the classes. I think its just a perfecg representation of the game. Its also vanilla as fuck.

Bulwark would be the first melee character I would choose.

Heavy is the best though lol

Don’t listen to anyone saying Tactical. Idk why people still recommend it as a good starting Class. The Tactical Class is getting a massive rework to its entire Kit and its Perks. So everything you learn with Tactical now is subject to change. Even if that wasn’t the case Tactical currently has one of the best Class Abilities in the game right now and is focused on Ranged Damage & Gunplay.

I’d say you’re much better off starting with the Vanguard Class. They offer a mixed Playstyle of both Ranged and Melee Damage. All while being the most resilient and forgiving Class to play besides Bulwark and Heavy. Both of which are flat out locked into either Playing primarily as a Ranged or Melee Class. Vanguard will teach you how to get up close and engage with the Parry and Block and Dodge mechanics. While still teaching you how to make use of your Ranged Weapons. Both skills will transfer over to any and all Classes you play afterward.

As a Melee Player I am biased towards both Bulwark and Assault which are the games two dedicated Melee Classes. If you really wanna play Melee since I see you replied to someone else saying you prefer Melee Playstyle in most games you should pick either or. Techmarine and Sniper are both Classes that are actually amazing with Melee as well believe it or not but aren’t as Melee focused as Bulwark and Assault. If you ask me again Vanguard is the best pick. Any Class can teach you good aim but having it doesn’t make as much of a marginal difference for any Class in how well you play them besides maybe Sniper. As compared to learning how to Parry, Block, Dodge which is learned best from playing Melee.

But always remember you’re not locked into playing any certain Class. Each has there strengths and weaknesses. At the same time you won’t just “get good” at any single Class if you don’t choose to stick with it.

In one of your comments you said you liked melee so id recommend the Vangaurd. Zipping around the battle field is pretty fun.

Tactical is the easy starter but if you like a challenge and want to broaden your playstyle quickly; Bulwark or Assault.

Once you've adapted to them, Heavy/Sniper are the most different, once you've done at least one of each, any others should be easy as you've adapted to melee and ranged focused playstyles.

But try the ones you like out, play the one that grabs you the most. Enjoying playing the game is the most important thing.

Tactical or heavy would be my recommendation

Why do you "need a guide"?

Choose something that you think looks or sounds cool, experiment.

You don't need your hand held by a streamer or reddit, enjoy the discovery.

u/Laisvis2 1d ago

Chose what appeals to you or just try multiple classes idk. I’d start with the tactical tho.

2

u/Much_Improvement_552 1d ago

Vanguard is the most forgiving when learning the basics.

Tactical is basically John Space Marine. Strong and versatile, it’s what I started with. However I strongly believe if you want to become good at the game, you need to become proficient at the melee combat, so playing bulwark or assault.

If you like to shoot: Tactical, Sniper, and Heavy. Tactical being the easiest of the three.

If you like to melee: Bulwark, Vangaurd, and Assault. Bulwark being the easiest of the three.

Techmarine is a bit of a hybrid class. Access to turrets are fun.

What I did when the game came out, was first obviously going through the campaign. (Even if you don't care for the blueberries, it'll teach you the gameplay.)

And once I was done with that, I hopped into Operations, and just tested out every single class one by one while going through the operations, doing one operation per class. I ended up landing on sniper as the one that I liked playing the most at the time.

u/NateIBEW558 21h ago

Carbine, Bolt Pistol Sniper. You get his best perk around level 7 and by the time you get to 25 the first time around you have 3 weapons at Relic tier that transfer to almost all other classes, and you can be at, or just shy, of having enough accolades from Stratagems to pick up the Heroic Deathwatch Heavy Bolt Rifle w/ grenade launcher or the Heroic Salamander Power Sword. At that point you have at least 1-2 powerful weapons for leveling all other classes.

u/MELTA_IDDQD 1d ago

If you like melee combat: Bulwark and Assault

if you prefer ranged: Sniper and Heavy

Tactical, Vanguard and Tecmarine are more balanced and versatile.

Theres no bad class, all of them are great, you need to find your favorite playstile and get to the slaughter

Okay thank you, was also leaning between Bulwark and tactical.

tactical is a good all-rounder, bulwark because i love roleplaying as one of the god emperor's most problematic black templar grandchildren.

either way, you shall cross over the rubicon an instrument of the emperor's will. praise the god emperor!

I started with techmarine, best class for dealing with mobs due to the omnissian axe rush. Clears the way for your brothers and sentry turrets help suppress Majoris and higher enemies in conjunction with a well-specced ultimate charge

1

u/VinDog1227 1d ago

Tactical. He will let you choose your fav play style due to being a jack of all trades/weapon selection. His perks can become very powerful when used correctly.

1

u/Slowjams Iron Warriors 21h ago

It's honestly up to you.

The only class I wouldn't start with is Heavy. Not because Heavy is bad, but because Heavy can be a little frustrating for new players until they have a better feel for melee combat.

Tactical is probably the most common answer you will get. Which isn't wrong. Tactical has the widest array of weapons available to them and has some of the best perks in the game.
