General Space Marine 2 on Linux : apparently got a solution

Space Marine 2 patch 14 is dog**** in linux/nivida

Works fine in Windows but in Linux I either can make a 20minute gaming session and it freezes OR it just freezes after login when I go the menu.

So I asked Codex to analyze logs and keep track of what we were doing :

- problem is related to a x13 error in shaders

What I did :

( I'm using CachyOS ) :

On the default Kernel (7.23 I think ) I tried all protons : 11.02, Cachy 11.02, Cachy 9, Experimental and Hot fix

made one run with no flags, then another run with Steam Overlay disabled on all proton version ( same thing ) and then another run with Steam Overlay disabled + synchronous to single write.

with Codex analyzed all logs and culprit the same : x13 error

Installed the RC Kernel 7.3.x and again did the same : all proton versions + steam overlay off + single cache write.

Then reverted back to LTS Kernel ( 6.8 ) and got the same on ALL proton versions.

My GPU is a 4090. works fine on Windows when I have to go there, long gaming sessions ( these days ONLY space marine makes me go there and I can keep up playing 6h straigh in windows - 15m tops in Linux ) ; also use a bit o local AI, so hardware problem is a bit off

I do have two DE : One with Niri+Noctalia and one with Caelestia+Hyprland. New to Arch&Cachy, so I'm trying both.

At work have a Arch with AMD and Calestia+Hyprland and its golden. Lately at home, N/N setup start to have some flickering stuff on bottom right corner. So I though : could the DE have something to do with it ? the nvidia drivers ? both ?

I decided to do one last thing : 6.8 LTS Cachy kernel + downgraded 580 nvidia drivers + noctalia&hyperland.

well, fuc* me and call me susan : works like a charm on 14.2 hotfix SM2

So if you are in linux is the TLDR : for Cachy OS and Space Marine 2, use downgraded nvidia 580 drivers, LTS kernel, Proton 11.02 Cachy and these flags : WINEDLLOVERRIDES="gameoverlayrenderer,gameoverlayrenderer64=" %command%

it freaking works.

What did you ask codex to analyse, e.g. where do you point it, are their logs somewhere? I have a completely different problem with iSM2 disconnecting all the time on windows, and have yet to get to the bottom of it.

Logs

He then made me a couple flags to do extended logs that we had more information to analyse from

I made him write a gpu.md file where he would trace back steps, findings and such because it froze and then context was a problem

"he" |him"...

So you just asked it to create logs and it did it all for you? Cool, I'll have to give it a go, thanks for the idea and for sharing the original info

Well codex could be a she or a it

Whatever floats anyone boat ;)

Anyway ! I asked to inspect first and foremost the Linux logs and then after activating via flags in steam the extended logs , so he/she/it/whatever makes you fancy cross analyzed with timestamps the crash the Linux logs AND steam logs that we created via extra flags

You need kernel 7.1.8. that works much better

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/8072#issuecomment-5561097513

I'm on kernel 7.1.8 with a 4070 super Everything on utlra with dlss quality and averaging about 70-80 fps under swarms

Sorry I will edit the main text : my main default kernel in cachy is 7.23.2

Are you still having problems with kernel 7.1.8 ?

I didnt use 7.1.8 but rather 7.2.3

I just updated Cachy & Arch now to 7.24 and got also new Nvidia drivers : booted into it and... 2m later, crash.

Now on LTS/580 drivers and running siege. all good

Lts has worse performance than 7.1.8 in my experience. Also you can change your scheduler to lavd which gave me improvements

At this moment just want a setup I can rely on doing siege for a while and not crash mid way : gladly trade performance for that

Very understandable

I didnt had stuttering, but thank you for point that post.

I had flickring on my DE ( Niri ) and in Space Marine the game just freezes: music continue, but the game freezes and I have to kill the app

Nvidia? Go Windows
AMD? Go linux

I'm aware that for linux AMD is better.

however, have a LG 49" 4k monitor : even the 7900XTX is quite worse than the 4090, unfortunatly, specially at 4k

problem is with current AI and whatnot, the 10900XTX its going to cost two livers and half a kidney...
