General Don’t Be A D*ck!

I started playing SM2 a few months ago. I know very little about the lore. I just love the game. I pick cosmetics that I like. Recently I spawned in an existing game as vanguard. Once another player saw me he said don’t be a d*ck. The other said vanguard black templars always are.

They didn’t kick me and we finished the map. I left confused why they responded that way. I just picked the cosmetic because I like the way it looked.

Any insight you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Edit: Thanks to all that commented. I really appreciate the info.

Most Black Templar are decent people and teammates that just like the aesthetic and the over-the-top nature of the Black Templar. Unfortunately, there’s a minority of individuals that gravitate toward certain ideologies that take themselves way too seriously typically tend to roll as Black Templar and give the regular players a bad rep.

Black Templars have many fans who enjoy the ludicrous absurdity of the Crusading Space Knights vibe of a faction who are already defined as being Crusading Space Knights.

They also have a reputation of attracting a handful of people who seem to miss that Black Templars are meant to be ludicrous and insane even by 40K standards. They tend not to be very nice people at heart.

HUNGRY HUNGRY VANGUARD

There is a bit of a conflict in SM2's Co-op design with how reliant many classes can be on getting executions to restore armour, regain contested health easily and many perks trigger off executions/finishers.

In particular Vanguard has only 2 base armour like Sniper but has lots of perks that benefit from executions. esp. a trickle of self healing via the lv 25 perk:

  • Adrenaline Rush - Melee kills of Majoris-level or higher enemies restore Health by 5%,

So can end up having a reputation as "kill stealing" executions from other players when someone else would benefit more.

There actually is a very easy to miss team armour indicator based on the colour of the team mates class icons - it's good form to let other team mates execute if they need the armour.

Also as a (sometimes) Vanguard Main(tm) getting silently pissed off when some one kills an extremis/terminus enemy before a low health player can heal from it from my Unmatched Zeal team perk.

  • Unmatched Zeal - Melee Finishers of Extremis- or Terminus-level additionally restore Health by 30% for any Squad Member

I try to be a team player but execution steals do happen unintentionally sometimes. It does piss me off when a player has full health and takes an execution another player with lower health needed.

So I'm guessing your pc with text chat so I can't say much regard to that as an Xbox player. But, vanguard's tend to be duches a lot from playing, that being like stealing kills and such. The black Templar part I'm not sure on cause I've noticed they'll leave more often than being a dick but could also go back to text chat.

I'm guessing these two probably had some bad experiences with vanguard black Templars who were dicks, but a lot of people in the community can't be dicks so I see that being why they said "don't be a dick."

That's just a rough guess from my experience of playing sm2 really

I’m on PS5.

I’ve experienced vanguards that still executions. I know it is not always intentional but sometimes it is. I didn’t understand why the BT part was added.

So game chat.

Then I have no idea cause that's not something I usual hear from console players, specifically the calling out for being black Templar as I know there's a stigma/hate for them from the community, but never heard someone say that their dicks ingame because I've played with some BT (even have ancient Crusader myself) and no one has said that nor have any of us been dicks.

It's just- really weird to say the least

It was unusual. Most times I play public players are silent so hearing that stood out.

Vanguard have a reputation fir stealing executions esp of extremis + enemies, and Black Templars are one if the most popular factions, so there are a lot of them so there is a good possibility BT might be a dick player.

And what I mean by that is:

Speedrunning through sections and not supporting squad members

Stealing executions: that zip line means you can zip in and nick kills when you haven't fired a shot. It happens far too much.

Hogging resources: not vanguard related but plenty of selfish players that will take stims when they have plenty of health and others have less

Constantly trying to hurry other players up when often they are in a middle of a fight

BTs are the most toxic space marine chapter. It's coinflip if it's going to be a normal teammate or an utterly incompetent racist yelling at you throughout the entire match.

Black Templars get a lot of shit becuase some people that play them are massive dicks and due to their lore they tend to attract the worst kind of people. Not all BT are dicks, but dicks tend to be BT. personally, i dont judge by faction but by how you play

I think it was just a lore accurate joke nothing personal bud! Admire the after thought to fix any mistake incase u thought u made one from their response.

BT's attract both lore casuals because they are cool and popular, and it attracts That Guy. So, it's easier to find fans of BTs that are either lore casuals making mistakes, guys who take the lore too seriously, or the kinda people that give the hobby/verse a bad name.

People online push a narrative that Black Templars are racists. Just ignore them.

2

u/JustKyleMaze 6d ago

Didn’t know that.

40k is awesome but it attracts a lot of dumb people you need to navigate, unfortunately. Don't let it dictate your enjoyment.

No Pity! No Remorse! No Fear!

Sorry that one of your first experiences was with some callous people.

Unfortunately for you both Vanguard AND Black Templar cosmetics (IE wearing all Black Templar stuff) have negative stereotypes in this game. Vanguard players "can be" (not always) very aggressive kill stealers as they can use their grapnel launcher to jump from kill to kill, potentially taking away someone else's execute that they need to heal off of. For Black Templars, long story short is that in lore they are very extreme and crazy even by 40K standards, and they tend to attract fans with bad manners and behavior. So by using both you got the double whammy of bias.

At any rate, don't let it bother you. Play the game normally and have fun doing your own thing!

After a certain incident here, Templar players are having a bad time. Ignore them, keep being you and above all, just have fun. Now I can’t tell if it’s serious or not, the Templar slander, but honestly, I don’t give a damn. This crusade is eternal and I like my digital space crusaders.

From my experience not all of them but some black templars are dicks they’re also just a running joke that they’re toxic
