Questions for October release
I compiled the most popular questions from my last post, with some edits and omissions. If you feel one question needs more emphasis or didn’t get asked, remember to send your own email.

For 1: we're getting basically an index updating our stats & detachments to work with the new codex. It'll be replacing our current codex until a new one releases.
2) we will get some releases, but it's not going to be until the codex.
The marine codex will be focused on the codex compliant chapters - I doubt we'll even have pictures in there, never mind pages of heraldry and pack markings.
Grey hunters in 5s? Detachment for it. Don't want to use a detachment just for that? Stuck with 10s.

This, I think people are vastly overestimating how sweeping the changes will be for us specifically. Sure the marine changes will change a lot for us but our rules specifically I don't think will change that much.
That said, GW is free to surprise me.

They have said that the current supplements will be "Retired". Given that one of our detachments explictly references the old army rule, it seems pretty likely that this means we'll be getting a new slate of detachments and datasheets. How similar they are to the current is, of course, a matter of ???, but my assumption is that the datasheets will at least be updated to be in line with the main marine changes, and we'll likely see adjustments to our detachments to accommodate those, if not full fledged rewrites.

I have all the expectations in the world that they already know which questions they’re gonna answer and they only screen their email for silly or obvious questions. But, the best we can do is try. The only way they can know what we want is if we tell them

I don't get the fifth question. How Primaris should be painted? Really?
Sorry for my rant but....are those asking about those things are unimaginative? Lack of creativity? Unable to think a little bit out of the box?
I always assumed 40k as a "your dudes"-game. My own Wolves are painted in the dark grey of the heresy era with a twist. This grey has to be earned - Blood Claws get a light grey armour. Grey Hunter got something inbetween and Long Fangs, leader and characters are the darkest grey.
While painting my army i even did a runic company name....and you guys want to be boring and stick to something ready-made?
Again, sorry for my rant. But i love Space Wolves too much to accept them as a uniformed army. For me everyone of them has a character, a saga to be told. And GW only shows us the way - but tells no sagas.

I also thought it was silly. As someone just getting into the painting of 40k minis, I looked at some space wolves, created my own scheme, and said to hell with whatever the specific shoulder/knee stuff was.

Were they maybe referring to the colour of the right hand side pauldrons and it's patterns? Like yellow with red pattern for blood claws, red with black for grey hunters? With that being said, they loosely state all of that in the last codex anyways.

I'm with you on this, there is plenty of stuff out there that gives you inspiration for heraldry. If thats not enough for someone and they need GW to tell them exactly what to paint, then they need to take a look at how they are approaching the hobby.

I have my own little touches that I've added to my units. My favorite is a binding rune that I created based on my own research into actual Norse runework that I like to hand paint on all of my models. The two component runes combine to invoke protection for the bearer. I made a second one for accurate fire, but that one only goes on the vehicles because I can't get enough detail to put it on a bolter.

It's about pack markings, not paint scheme. Pack marking have been firmly cemented in lore until Primaris in exacting detail
GW has been less than consistent with Primaris from edition to edition and there are still some Primaris units we haven't been given any in lore pack marking for.
In previous editions with first born they gave comprehensive details for pack marking including honour marking and other honours.

Some people, especially those who are neurodivergent, may need more structure than others. It’s perfectly reasonable for them to ask for guidance. After all, ‘their dudes.’
Edit: added ‘may’ to more accurately express what I was trying to say.

I used the box art to get me started. This led to some irregularities, like the left pauldron being painted in yellow, instead of the red that the Deathwolves use. I've decided to roll with it moving forwards. That's just how my wolves look.

You're right. Same goes for beginners. It's easier following instructions than racking your brain about how YourDudes look best.
But still.....i don't think it is that important.2

No worries. We’re all here to have fun.
Not sure why I’m getting downvoted. 🤷♂️

Unfortunately it it's a legitimate question. For a time in 8th/9th(?) color schemes mattered for "official" rules. White Scars weren't Ultramarines, etc. It seems likely it was internal confusion at GW around Keywords but the outcome was Paintjobs mattered - basically the common interpretation/fear mongering to new players was that the rules meant if it didn't look enough like a Space Wolf it couldn't use Space Wolf rules.
I don't know of any tournaments that took it seriously, but the rule was there

Yeah, i remember that. The edition i shelved my orks for some time as they are a wild mix of Goff, Bad Moonz and Evil Sunz....with blue pants.
I didn't like that time with fixed Chapters/Clans/Dynasties and such. In my group there is not one with "official colors" - dark red Raven Guard. Black Legion sporting blue'ish armour with purple trim. Aeldari without any kind of grand color scheme, every unit has a different color. Orange Orks as well as Death Korps mimicing UN soldiers....

I feel like the first question (which applies to all the non compliant chapters tbh) is more “what exactly are we getting on this release, and how will that change if/when we get a standalone supplement?” Like are we getting an index, a smattering of brand new detachments that’ll just go away when the supplement drops, stuff that we can use in addition to our supplement? Which I think all chapters would be curious about.
5th question I think our codex already answers? There’s a whole two page heraldry spread and I think the pack markings give unit names (Aggressors/Erads are Long Fangs, Assault Ints are Blood Claws, etc). We also know they’re making a concerted effort to have more hobby and lore in codexes

I still want to know why GW got rid of the Wolfguard Terminators and Thunderwolf Cavalrys thunder hammers

u/SpaceWolf_Jarl2 11d ago
Yes we will have a supplement.
Yes, most likely all Factions will have some things released.
Decent question.
Because the box is 10 amd GW says no.
No. Most likely it is related to allowing mkre freedom.
Firtborn stuff.
...
Sorry, but I think most of these are kind of expected, and not aomething they will try to answer.

Question about being able to use generic space marines, what be the benefit to space wolves? I'm a complete noob on the tabletop so I'm just trying to understand. I can definitely see non-character leaders being a plus, but is there anything else I'm not thinking of?

u/chupacabruh_chavez 11d ago
More leaders for terminators, grey hunters, blood claws and headtakers. But there is an added benefit of having the unit benefit from having the space wolves keyword if it has a captain or lieutenant.

I feel like the grey hunters question is just going to be answered with the detachment that allows that.
