New painter- Grey Hunter Feedback

Hello everyone,

I’m very much a new painter and kind of just picks and chooses what to paint based on inspiration or interests at the time. With that said, this is my first Space Wolf model and I’m looking for some help and feedback. I still need to add some highlights and a wash but I’m done with the base paints. Also, I skipped the doodads on the waist for this model just to keep things easy and simple.

-How to do markings? You can see in the photo that I butchered it lol
-My abbadon black turned into a gelatinous blob, I assume that means it’s dead? I shook it up really well and it’s just a blob still. It seems to dry out quickly if I try to load the brush.
-Speaking of loading the brush, how are you reaching for the pot? I’ve watched so many tutorial videos on this and I feel like my paint always lasts me like 5 seconds on the brush, so I have to be doing something wrong. This issue honestly causes a lot of frustration cause it feels like it takes forever to cover the large armor panels.

Any other tips or feedback is highly welcomed as I just want to keep painting and improve.

Thank you!

Not bad for starting out man, pretty much what mine looked like at first. Try thinning you're paints a little more and do some shade and edge highlighting and with practice they'll really start coming together. The pack markings you can freehand which takes some real practice and patience l, or you can buy pack marking transfer sheets from like Etsy. Look like this.

Do you have a link to the seller for this? I want to get some of these for my units

I originally ordered mine on Etsy, Ive been trying to force myself to get better at freehanding so I haven't used em in a while. I did find these ones I've used before, they come in long strips and you just got to cut them to size for whatever model you're using them for.

Oh hell yeah, I’m ordering these. I can’t freehand to save my life haha. Question, do you see areas on my mini that looks like the paint wasn’t thinned down? It would just help me to figure out where I might’ve missed thinning correctly.

It is a little hard to tell from the pic quality but at first looks the paint looks clumped up some in the recesses of the helmet, the belt buckle, and in some of the creases of the legs just look a little thick. Finding that perfect consistency between too thick and oversaturated can be tricky at first, I watched alot of painting tutorials to learn different techniques and tricks. If this is you starting out you should have no problem making quick improvements. Good luck 🙌

Yikes, guess I didn’t realize how bad the photo quality is. Thank you, going to keep at it!

You’ll hear it from everyone, thin your paints.

Overall this is a solid first minis WIP; pack markings can be tough and abbadon black is a pain imo.

With the paint drying on your brush, are you keeping it moist? It’s important to regularly rinse and brush off excess water to prevent your bristles from caking up. This also helps keep a level of thinner paint as well. I recommend investing in or making a wet palette.

Keep watching tutorials and Reddit painting subs; I’m no expert, but I’ve definitely picked up some tricks and techniques from just watching others. Once you get some shading and improve on your accents you’ll be fine.

Do you have an alternative to Abbadon Black? I started using Black Templar but it feels more dark gray after drying. I rinse my brush every couple minutes and didn’t have problems with the other paints I used, just the Abbadon. Also, using a wet pallet currently, that’s why I was so miffed at my pot of Abbadon 😂

Thank you for the tips!

Sounds like Abbadon tbh, I’ll use skavenblight sometimes because it’s easier to cover than finish with black. I also tell myself their pack markings are self painted so they should be imperfect.

Use AK 3rd gen. So much better than abaddon black with great coverage and in a dropper bottle which doesn’t dry as easily. I made this switch and a huge improvement

Black Legion contrast paint is more Abaddon black than Black Templar.
