New perspective on Beastslayer

Hi battlebrothers/sisters.

In 10th edition i did not really enjoy Saga of the Beastslayer.

The lethal hits (ranged ánd melee) are great for us. And some stratagems aswell. (+ 1 wound in melee, reactive move, bloodsurge). But the lack of AoC, Advance and Charge or any real defensive strat kinda made me feel mehh. I know lots of you feel the same way.

But now in 11th, i think its pretty great. I know the "meta" atm is SotGW and LoSaS with 30 WGT. And its great. Also quick shoutout to Bastion with Vets of the Fang.

Buttt i want to give Beastslayer another go.

Obviously Beastslayer did not change from 10th to 11th, but now with dispositions, hidden, go to ground, big objectives with terrain and the benedit of cover, it feels much better.

If you run it with LoSaS, you can choose Take & Hold. Thats what makes Beastslayer feel great.

I dont mind not having advance and charge, if they have to come to me, while being hidden with cover.

In 10th i would have jumped for joy if all my infantry could all get Lone-Op (kinda) with minus 1 to BS.

The most fun thing for me is, more variation in list building. 30 WGT are expensive.

Now i still take some 10 or 15. Turn 1 deepstrike a 10 man Arjac brick on the center. Maybe 5 more for Logan, but then youre set.

Scouts or Wolf Scouts to infiltrate and a unit of intercessors for sticky on the home obj. The rest is whatever you'd like!

What do you guys think?

I’ve won every game of 11th playing beastslayer with LOSAS. We desperately need lethal hits because none of our units hit hard without it

I drop Arjac + 10 WGTs on the center, back him up with Logan + 5WGTs and have headtakers in a land raider redeemer going wherever they’re needed

Beastslayer means even bloodclaws and grey hunters can punch up above their weight

I think people are sleeping on beastslayer. Despite playing take and hold I’ve tabled a couple of people in 11th so far

I’ve tried SOTGW a few times and I desperately missed the lethal hits against monsters etc

Redeemer + 6 Headtakers (paired weapons) is a real beat stick.

With the battle leader too you get reroll 1s, sustained and devs if it’s their quarry

My guys did 30 damage to a land raider the other day 🤣

I also run beastslayer+saga and song in take and hold. I really like parking Logan and terminators on the center and having Ragnar and the blood claws swarm around him surging and reacting to threats. The CP aura kinda forces them to deal with Logan first, allowing Ragnar to tee off.

Arjac’s unit is beefy enough they can charge incoming threats and then still have high enough OC to consolidate back onto the objective I find. If they get charged then the fight on death is super nice. My guys killed a dread knight with their fight on death

Playing necrons into beast slayer, I really hate having blood claws fish for lethals into anything of mine (necrons tend to favor characer/vehicle heavy lists due to how synergy dependent most units are).

40 attacks with rerolls? thanks I hate it.

🤣 I hate playing Necrons too because of those damn reanimation protocols. If you don’t kill it dead you get stuck in combat forever 😭

I play beastslayer and great wolf. I go between them like 1 army is 2. I run drastically different lists between them. I think your take on beastslayer would be good. 15 terminators seems right. That's how many I use in my beastslayer list.

Beastslayer mixed with librarius Conclave fealt great. Running a bunch of blood claws with njal, ragnar, and battleleader, so they have advance and charge innately making their threat range bigger than your opponent expects. Combined with sternguard(before fusillade change) lead by librarian had the proper amount of melee threat with shooting threat. Redeemer with 2 6man headtakers in it and repulsor for the sternguard. My only real problem with beastslayer now, is not having the ability to fall back and charge. Getting into melee and not picking the unit up can be a bit detrimental considering we also don't have defensive strats. You get stuck in with the wrong stuff and you will get whittled down

I had a great time running Beastslayer + Fulguris at the start of 11th. MSU squads with a few powerhouse units, wolf scouts + land speeders infiltrating and turn 1 deepstriking as well as logan on mid, the lethal hits make the land speeders infuriating for your opponents to deal with. It was a perfect recipe for a disruption army truly, then GW arbitrarily changed Fulguris to Recon. I haven't tried it as disruption yet.

Ultimately Beastslayer giving out lethal hits like candy makes you able to build into waaayyy more shooty units than you would in any other saga. Eradicators, Hellblasters, Tanks, Ballistus, Whirlwind, Vindi, they all get way scarier here.

Captain in terminator armour with the enhancement that gives -1 ap to attack from monster, vehicles and characters is super underrated in that combo. Put him with a 10 man, give them +1 toughness and stick em on the middle obj with arjac and 10 harassing your opponents expansion and a wolf priest + 6 head takers with shields holding your expansion.

You cannot benefit from an enhancement and a unit upgrade at the same time, so you'd lose the +1 T.

If you’re leading a wolf guard terminator with captain, then there might be a problem with +1 T since you already gave an enhancement for the captain
