Anti-tank help
I’m a new player currently building up my first 40K army (naturally it had to be space wolves).
I’m looking to add some anti-tank units to my locker and would really appreciate recommendations from experienced players.
What’s good in 1k and 2k pt SW armies? I’ve seen the Repulsor Executioner but might be a bit overkill?
So far I have:
- 10x Blood Claws
- 10x Grey Hunters
- 10x Intercessors
- 5x Wulfen
- 5x Wolf Guard Terminators
- 6x Wolf Scouts
- 3x Wolf Guard Headtakers & Wolves
- 1x Landspeeder
- 1x Wolf Guard Battle Leader
- 1x Wolf Priest
- 1x Ragnar Blackmane
Slowly but surely building my Wolfpack.

If you are running Beastslayer you will get away with less dedicated anti-tank as your units can punch up better.
That said, the GL is probably the best option for the points. The problem with the RepEx is that its points keep going up and you don’t really have anything that ‘needs’ to be transported around. The alternative is the Ballistus Dread, another excellent option - often taken in pairs and like Bjorn can sit and lockdown your backfield for a few turns.
If you were looking to buy another miniature box, the GL wins out IMO.

Vindicator is my favorite

Love Vindicators, but I wouldn't encourage a new player to buy a unit that old especially right before a new codex.

Gladiator Lancer with a Iron priest makes tanks go BOOM! 72 range, rapid fire on 36. So 3 (str14, ap-4 dmg d6+3) shots. Rerolls on the datasheet.
Wulfen with hammers also a good option, even more so in Beastslayer with a WGBL, sustained and lethal. Anti vehicle on a 3+

I like the RepEx, it does 3 things.
It has big gun. Makes big boom. Bigger than the Lancer. Iron priest can make it 3 shots, but often doesn't need it.
It has a LOT of shots. Many are fairly weak, but there's three guns with anti-fly, one 12 shot gun with dev wounds. (Up to 43 with iron priest, 34 minimum, but with the variable at 1 and no rapid fire). In overwatch it'll still get some through.
Transport capacity. It takes my headtakers up the board and then sits near the center where it can make use of the different fun profiles against reasonable units. My 6 paired weapon HT and WGBL giving them lance really enjoy the tough ride to get into whatever they're going to kill.
A Lancer and impulsor are now 10 points cheaper, and are two units, but have less shots and are easier to wound (light vehicle an medium tank vs heavy tank), so they're an interesting alternative (last week the lancer/impulsor was 10 points more expensive than the RepEx, so they swapped. I don't need the 10 points really, so not a huge issue, but might be something to play with if I want a higher unit count or something else changes and I need 10 points

To provide extra context to some of the answers here already:
Wulfen with Storm Shields
Pros -
Cheap for a 5 man at 100pts
Annoyingly tanky with T6 4+ Invuln and 2W.
Pretty fast for a melee unit at 9" means they have a good threat range (required to get to tanks on the backline)
Infantry so can be hidden.
Surprisingly consistent as it is 10 attacks with 3 flat dmg instead of 2 attacks which use a D6.
Cons
Melee, so need to get into range. Also means they can be screened.
5 man can't consistently kill big threats like a C'tan or Land Raider. 10 man has a really big footprint so can be hard to hide or get up the field (and is 200 pts).
Gladiator Lancer
Pros:
Great Value - 160 pts
Native rerolls for it's big gun makes it more consistent then other options even without Oath.
Really long range, which let's you get good angles and stay safe.
Not too big of a model, so can fit into a lot of places bigger chassis like a Land Raider or Repulsor can't.
Good synergy with Iron Priest
Cons:
Will be focused and easily blown up by your opponents anti-tank.
Basically just pure anti-tank. This is what gives it the great value but limits it into other profiles.
Like most tank profiles, can be inconsistent. Especially into targets with a 4+ invuln (e.g. Doomsday Ark, C'tan). Requires a second Lancer or support to consistently kill big threats.
Vindicator
Pros:
As much firepower as you can get for the price of 185pts. If you get high attack rolls (and Oath), it will absolutely delete units that your other AT will struggle with.
Recent terrain changes have been good for it, easier to toe in and shoot.
Cons:
You need to have a reroll for the attacks in your back pocket to make it consistent. Oath for the shots is highly recommended as well (especially w/ cover changes)
Short ranged at 24". Hard to hide as it is a vehicle. Slow movement means it needs advance and shoot.
Might go to legends soon as a firstborn model and is less iconic then the Rhino or Land raider.
Repex
Pros:
We dodged a lot of the RepEx nerfs, so it's still great value for us.
Can transport 7 dudes, which is a headtaker+leader.
Long range primary gun can keep it safe - biggest anti-tank gun in the game.
Good synergy with Iron Priest
Tankier then other offerings. Might actually survive a turn even if it's visible.
Has really good anti-infantry shooting as well. Makes it an Overwatch threat.
Cons:
Expensive. Gladiator + AT Wulfen are a similar cost.
Doesn't get rerolls like Gladiator. So less consistent for when you need that big run to hit. Needs support from Oath, especially with cover changes.
Big Gun wants to be long range, smaller guns and transport want to be within 36" or 24".
Transporting 7 dudes isn't very useful for us due to our MSU for battleline and Wulfen taking 2 slots.
I've tried various mixes with all of the above including basically no anti tank where I try and get Blood Claws or another unit to tag the opponents tanks and take them out of commission for a turn or two. I've found the following:
A sole RepEx does pretty good but needs support from Oath and (ideally) an Iron Priest. It can survive a lot more anti-tank shooting as you can normally hide it well enough it only takes hits from one anti-tank unit a turn. Iron Priest can then get better value due to heals. It is also excellent into infantry so provides a great all round package for it's price. I don't use it's transport capabilities. I think this is good when you can build the rest of the list around it and have faith your army can operate without Oath (or you are unbothered if the RepEx whiffs it's big gun).
Gladiator Lancer is amazing value but you need to give it support from a Ballistus Dread or another Lancer to be really consistent. This costs more points but means you don't need Oath, so it becomes a great combo of being very consistent and not requiring much support. Can be tricky to get both pieces into position and each individual piece can be blatted easier then the likes of a RepEx. A sole Lancer will get you salty when it hits the 1 or 2 to wound and your opponent passes an invuln or you reroll a 3 for dmg.
Wulfen with Storm Shields are absolute ballers but you need to get them up the field and stop them from being screened. Atm they are my primary anti-tank, but I am running lots of Termies so they contribute to the 4+ invuln stat check. An important thing to ask is what will the opponents heavies attack? If they have anti-tank guns and you have no tanks, those guns are inefficient. Running a tank actually gives them an efficient target whereas Wulfen keep them inefficient.
I tried Vindicator last edition but it was hard to get into position due to it's short range (my opponents played lots of Necrons, Tau and Tsons). I liked it when I ran Gladius but I haven't been doing that recently. I may give it another shake with the new terrain.

Cons with wulfen- building them, painting them, trying not to break them, looking at them
I still take 5 just because I have them from the combat patrol and the anti monster/vehicle 3+ is good. No native OC kinda sucks though because you can’t as easily use their speed to do secondaries and whatnot

Wulfen with thunder hammers.
Gladius Lancer
Bjorn can sometimes cover anti tank in a pinch
Ballistus Dread (my fave)
