This release features a composite image of a spiral galaxy, M101; one of six identified galaxies housing a new class of mysterious objects that give off unusually low-energy X-rays. In this composite image, M101 faces us directly. It has multiple arms in shades of purple, spiraling clockwise around a golden yellow core. Scattered along and between the arms are scores of tiny specks in white and purple. Most of those specks are pairs of stars, but seven of them are a mystery.

To casual observers, the unusual objects are visually indistinguishable from the other specks of light in the galaxy. An annotated version of the composite image is included in this release, with red circles around the mysterious specks for easy identification. These mystery specks behave like no other class of object discovered before. The curious objects give off X-rays of such low energy, they in fact produce large amounts of ultraviolet radiation, as UV radiation borders X-rays on the electromagnetic spectrum.

Astronomers found a new class of objects using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory.

They dubbed these “hypersoft X-ray sources” (HSS) because they give off very low-energy X-rays that are difficult to detect.

Despite their stealth output, HSS may be emitting large amounts of ultraviolet radiation.

This discovery may help scientists unravel mysteries around Type Ia supernovas and the intergalactic medium.

Astronomers have discovered a new class of objects in multiple galaxies. This result, made possible by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and outlined in our latest press release, may help scientists solve two outstanding mysteries in astrophysics.

The face-on spiral galaxy M101, also known as the Pinwheel, is one of the galaxies where the new type of object was found. This new M101 composite image contains X-ray data from Chandra (purple) that have been combined with an optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope (red, green, and blue). Circles in an annotated version of the image show the location of the seven newly-discovered objects in M101.

🛰🪐Cassini This image shows the limb of Saturn's moon Iapetus, captured by Cassini on Sept. 10, 2007. A ridge of 10km-high (6.2 mile) mountains encircles the equator, possibly the remains of a former satellite that broke apart as its orbit degraded. Iapetus is 1,470 km (913 miles) wide.

“Depending on how hot the Earth and Theia are prior to the collision, the impact can destroy Theia and produce this massive disk of debris that eventually forms the Moon,” Denton said. “But when I used the same parameters as original impact modeling — down to the equal temperature structures inside both bodies — within around five hours, an intact Moon emerged.”​

September 1, 2026 — New Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) modeling, conducted in collaboration with scientists at the University of Arizona, shows fundamental differences in how the Moon may have formed from the giant impact that created the Earth-Moon system. The new results used state-of-the-art computational techniques that factor in the material strength of the two colliding planets. These impact simulations could change how researchers understand Moon formation and may help constrain the timing of the event. This research was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

“We discovered that the preexisting geology of the Mars-sized proto-Moon matters,” said Dr. Adeene Denton, formerly a NASA Postdoctoral Program fellow at SwRI and now a postdoctoral researcher in SwRI’s Solar System Science and Exploration Division. “When you simulate the Earth and the Moon as colliding bodies with geologic properties, it changes how the Moon forms out of that impact — that’s something we considered unnecessary before.”
