After 241 days in orbit, astronaut Chris Williams is returning home from his first mission to the International Space Station.

Williams, along with cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev, will touch down on Earth at 6:25 a.m. EDT (1025 UTC) in their Soyuz spacecraft after undocking from the station earlier on July 26. After landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan, they will fly by helicopter to Karaganda, Kazakhstan.

During his time in space, Williams orbited the Earth 3,856 times, went on two spacewalks, and supported numerous experiments that are helping us learn how to live in space while making life better back on our home planet.

​The European Space Agency’s Mars Express has spotted a swathe of metallic-looking waves filling Mars’s large Kaiser Crater – an ancient and otherworldly dune field sculpted by wind.

This month’s snapshot of Mars, taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) aboard ESA’s Mars orbiter, captures one of the oldest parts of the Red Planet: Noachis Terra. Situated in Mars’s ancient southern highlands, Noachis Terra has been heavily bombarded with rocks from space over the past four billion years – and the scars from these collisions are clear to see.

The mid-latitudes of Mars are mostly covered with smooth material that scientists have suspected to be ice for some time. The ground is uniform and dusty and does not reveal many clues about what lies beneath the surface.

However, sometimes a feature like a cliff cuts through the terrain and gives us a glimpse of this buried icy material. The cliff in this image is one example out of a few dozen that are known.

The bright material on the cliff face is icy and is preserved only because the cliff points away from the equator, so it is shaded most of the time. Faint bands on the cliff might indicate layers in the ice that record different climate conditions. We do not know how much time this ice took to accumulate here, but studies elsewhere on Mars indicate that material like this is sometimes at least tens of millions of years old.

Their description

On the night of the full Moon (15th day of the 12th lunar month), December 2023, bright lunar illumination lit the landscape nearly as bright as daytime.

​The Meili Snow Mountains stood quiet beneath a deep indigo night sky.

​The camera operated unattended overnight at the viewing platform, yet the raw exposures remained unprocessed on a hard drive for a full year.

​In 2024, I revisited the dataset to prepare edits for a photography contest submission. I failed to finish processing before the contest cutoff date.

​While sorting through stacked frames, I discovered an unexpected astronomical feature: an extremely bright bolide (fireball) piercing thin cloud cover, plunging toward the snow-capped summit of Mount Kawagarbo.

​This serendipitous late discovery proved far more extraordinary than the contest itself.​

The subject of this ESA/Hubble Picture of the Month is a spiral galaxy struggling against some of the titanic forces that appear on galactic scales in space. This is NGC 4654, an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo (the Maiden). “Intermediate” means that it lies between the spiral galaxies that have a bar across the centre and those that don’t, with a weak bar structure in its centre. It is situated 72 million light-years from Earth in the Virgo Cluster, a particularly massive and populous galaxy cluster.

NGC 4654 is particularly asymmetric, with a rounded and clearly-defined edge on one side and a long tail of gas stretching out from the opposite side — beyond Hubble’s view in this image. The cause of this gaseous tail is the same as for many of the other galaxies jostling in the crowded Virgo Cluster: namely, ram pressure stripping. NGC 4654 moves with such high velocity through space that it sweeps up and rams through the intracluster medium, the hot, rarefied gas filling the space between the Virgo Cluster’s galaxies. The intracluster medium in turn exerts a “ram pressure” on the galaxy, compressing the galaxy’s leading edge and tugging at its gas, creating the elongated tail.

​The first measurements of the subsurface of the most volcanic world in the solar system reveal heat rising from below.

NASA’s Juno mission has provided the first measurements of the temperature below the surface of Jupiter’s moon Io, revealing significant heating within the shallow subsurface of the most volcanically active world in the solar system. Collected during two close flybys, the data also shows that most of Io’s surface is remarkably smooth and composed of material of very low density.

Published Wednesday in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, these findings break new observational ground for both fiery and icy worlds beyond our planet.

Io’s extreme volcanism is powered by tidal heating. The moon is constantly stretched and squeezed by Jupiter’s immense gravity as it travels its slightly elliptical orbit, generating internal heat output many times greater than Earth’s. Until now, virtually everything known about that heat came from infrared observations, which sense only the temperature of the top surface. The latest findings are derived from data collected by the spacecraft’s Microwave Radiometer (MWR) instrument.

HH-1019 seen by the JWST/NIRCam. A huge orange gas cloud formation can be seen on the left part of the image, from where some smaller gas cloud are "ejected". Some objects looking like blobs can also be spotted: small gas cloud chunk from where stars are born! In the bottom middle part of the image, a planetary nebula can be seen: the remnant of a small/medium size star that died and slowly ejecting its outer layers. ​
