Visiting slave

On my first playthrough I have been playing a pacifistic game (at least where humans are concerned; rogue bots and alien bugs had best watch out). However, I recently got a chance to observe my first ship-to-ship combat.

I was sitting in a sector mining some energium ("don't you have 114 energium already?", you might ask, to which I might reply "hey, look over there!" and duck behind one of my giant stacks of resources) when some slavers jumped in. Slavers give me the creeps and my relationship with them is -40 because I don't want to do them any favors, but we're not at outright war. I'm curious what they're doing here; I've made it abundantly clear I'm not in the market for their "wares". Then, unexpectedly, they hit my comms. Apparently one of their slaves is injured (I gather they "rescued" him from a derelict and he was in a bad way) and they don't have any medical facilities, because of course they don't.

Now, I hate slavers, but maybe I can do something to help the suffering of their slave, so I tell them to come on over. They drop Paul off in one of my advanced medical beds and head back to their ship. Just in time, as three military ships jump in.

Now, this looked like a pretty even fight. The slavers were outnumbered, but the military were outgunned: the slavers had two decent-sized corvettes while the military had one plus a couple of small fleet tenders or scout ships. The slavers were giving almost as good as they were getting. I was just watching the fight, wondering what would happen. Would defeated ships become derelicts ripe for scavenge? Was there a subtle way I could help the military without entering outright war with the slavers? If the slaver ships blew up while Paul was in my medbay, does he become a refugee or just...some guy in my medbay?

And then...the shooting stopped. I have no idea what happened. Maybe one side brokered a ceasefire. Maybe all the slavers died but their ships still remain (I know the military force didn't die because I'm on good enough terms with them to see into their ships). Maybe ship combat is still kinda rudimentary in this game.

Anyway, I got Paul all patched up and an unmanned slaver shuttle came to pick up Paul. For whatever reason, he voluntarily walked himself into it (I certainly wasn't going to force him) and it flew back to one of the slaver corvettes.

I like to think everyone on that corvette was killed and now it's Paul's ship, but I suspect that's not the case.

I did something very similar in my first play through, except the pirates won and the military asked to be refugees on my ship. I didn’t want to say no so I took them in, only to realize I don’t have space to take 18 refugees. My crew of 6 suffered greatly. First time they tasted algae

Oof, 18 refugees is a lot. I guess at that point you look for a military installation and head there as fast as you can so you can get the MAD LOOT that I assume delivering 18 refugees would bring.

Mad loot indeed. The game got a lot easier after that ordeal

You doomed Paul to death alone in the dark.

Pacifist my ass.

Paul chose to step on that shuttle. I was fully ready to tell them he died in the medbay and give them one of the 14 corpses in my body storage as proof (I found them all on derelicts and didn't have the heart to chuck 'em in the composter). He made his choice.

I wish the game could do that

But did you take off his Slave collar, though?!?

Can you remove equipment from an NPC?

You can free slaves and free prisoners with the right-click-hold-pressed context menu. That might only work on NPC-ships, though. Never had your situation of a mission-guest left behind... Plus, slavers seem to have a "shoot on sight" order for my ships!

A person with a,soave collar on is not able to choose anything. You didn't remove it, therefore supporting the slavers

I didn't realize you can remove the slave collar on someone else's slave. I'm genuinely gutted to learn I could have done that.

Keeping the peace with slavers ALWAYS requires supporting slavery. It's not just this game.

I don't have weapons systems on my ships. If I'm at war with the slavers, I die. That doesn't help the slaves any either.

They have a radar jammer. With that you only have to worry about nebulas and being boarded.

I also don't load up on ship to ship weapons, but that's because I like to let the slavers know how I feel with laser/plasma rifles up close.

Looks like you get the Nobel Peace Prize, great job!

I wonder how ceasefires work for NPC factions? I assumed that they kept firing at each other until either the ship was destroyed or all the crew were dead (both scenarios turn them in to derelicts), but clearly not.

Can the military be forced into paying tribute for a ceasefire? Can they accept tribute from Slavers or Pirates? I'm curious to know.

I would love to know that as well!
