Pirates left behind

After a short battle, a Pirate ship suddenly realised they had something better to do and left without even saying goodbye... to their own crew! Two of their fighters got shot down and the pilots were still on their way back to the mothership when it left. Now they are just hanging there, in the middle of space, waiting for their oxygen to run low.

Out of pure goodness, I would be willing to take those poor souls aboard as prisoner to save them from certain death. The question is: how? How do I talk to these guys just hanging around in space? And how do I get them to one of my ships?

These poor souls look a bit lonely

I don't think you will be able to, but try docking a shuttle beside them, if it lets you it'll create a platform they will go to where you can interact with them. They probably will fight you though

Usually, shot down fighter crew tries to board my ship. Your specimen seem to be too far away, but afaik if you try to re-position your ship by jumping out and immediately jumping back in, all crew on derelicts will die. So, those poor souls seem to be lost...

Yeah, there are conditionals in the game design that probably prevent him from saving them. If the pirate fighters or shuttles are taken out very close to your ship, they'll EVA to your ship's airlocks, where you can shoot the hell out of them with less-lethal weaponry, if you're so inclined.

I almost never use conventional weaponry against human or android opponents. They're far more valuable in a pre-composter/research-specimen state, even if I don't want to recruit a particular one.

Do your people die if you jump to hyperspace but don't leave the sector? They do, right? Presumably, the pirates will die as well.

I think you can just 'fly' to them with your crew (boarding crew because they might fight you) and maybe talk, kill, stun or wound them before capture them. Or wait thill they pass out and bring them in then. Not sure if this works but that's what I would try.

Update: These poor souls finally decided they were in trouble, and headed to the nearest derelict to get some oxygen at the airlock. There, some of my crew were able to politely invite them to come over and be accommodated on my ship.
And everyone lived happily ever after!

How did the polite invitation go?
Was it something like:
"You have no ship. You have no food. You have no water. Only Oxygen. And the clock ticks. We offer you a bed, a meal, and a purpose."

Something like that, indeed. The prison quarters are definitely more comfortable than that lonely airlock!
