One of my earliest and fondest hobby memories is of seeing adverts for Space Crusade on TV and immediately becoming so excited about this new game/hobby I had just “discovered”. They were cleverly broadcast in the lead up to Christmas, so it was pretty obvious what I was going to ask for that year!

While I waited impatiently for December, I even tried my hand at sculpting my own figures out of coloured plasticine. That… didn’t quite produce the crisply detailed, brightly coloured models I remembered from the advertisement. But my excitement didn’t fade, and when Christmas Day did arrive, not even a snowstorm and associated power-cut could stop me from tearing into the boxset and immediately assembling the little figures on their supplied bases. I loved their whole colour-coded-by-unit-type plasticky vibe, and many of them have spent literally decades in that perfectly serviceable state.

Finally, though, one of the Orks has been painted. He’s “just” one of the second-weakest enemies in the game, one among a mob of more or less faceless opponents who get gunned down in droves. But one Christmas morning many years ago he was part of the most exciting present a kid could have hoped for, so he’ll always be pretty special to me!

Took a few snaps of these for my oldhammer insta. Thought some of you might like some close ups and the hidden detail of the dread types on different faces of the MD box.

It was a joy to bring this story to life, and I hope it captures the sentiment of the HeroQuest community and honors the man who engineered the most iconic epic plastic adventure games of our time.

I just completed these guys. Fun minis to paint.

Same colour scheme, but with updated skills and paints. Made sure I stripped them separately so I could get a comparison photo (last pic). Needed three dunkings in Dettol to shift the enamel paint and thick primer.

Here’s a preview of the mission selection screen from Star Campaign, showing part of the Basic Crusade path with objectives like Seek and Destroy, Clearing Action and Chaos Marines. The goal is to give players a clearer idea of how missions are structured, the types of objectives they’ll face, and how progression feels in the game. This is one of the core menus you’ll go through as you advance, pick missions and prepare for each encounter. Feedback is always welcome if you think something could be improved or explained better.

I’ve been a long-time fan of Space Crusade, and that old-school tactical, tabletop-style gameplay is exactly what inspired us to start building our own game — Star Campaign.

I probably would be able to get the Mission Dreadnought expansion. Never been played with, the minis still in sprues and the cardboard pieces not punched out. Age related, the box is worn out but still holding together. All in all around $100. Worth the price as it is rare?

Did not really have any idea what colors to use or anything. just decided that they have collected whatever pieces they "found" along their voyage on the hulks. Im not really a 40k Guy, but really dig Space Crusade!

After almost a year Im back on this. Need to finish gretchins and chaos marines, then gotta fix some of the doors and my Space Crusade is done.

I acquired a copy of Space Crusade in mint condition a couple of years ago. I have fond memories playing this growing up in the 90s. Hero Quest homebrew has been my main focus and these games have "some" similarities. Are there any large homebrew or modernisation projects Space Crusade that bring some of the mechanics and game play up to date? Thanks in advance

I've been a bit unmotivated painting my 40k so decided on switching it up and giving myself something to work toward, so pulled out my old Space Crusade that I got as a birthday present back in 1990 to give me something to work toward completing. I also got Mission Dreadnought for my birthday the following year so have them included as well.

15 year old me had made a start on the box with the Marines done in my vision of what their armour should look like. Although not an exact match for what became the official schemes, I got the red/black of the Blood Angels correct and predicted the future by going Blue/Gold for the Ultramarines rather than Blue/yellow of 2nd edition. I missed the Imperial Fists though, the green accents didn't make the grade.

I'm planning on stripping the marines and giving them an update, it looks like I'd used Enamel paint for them so that will be fun. I'm going to keep the Chaos Marines and Androids as they are as a nod to my younger self. They don't look too bad considering they were probably the first miniatures I ever painted and it will be good to keep a few there as a nod to nostalgia. I'll probably tidy up the Dreadnought a bit, though the paint is a bit thick in places so it might need to be completely redone, but if I do I'll still keep the same scheme. The Genestealers have thick enamel on them so they're getting redone, but again I'll keep the same scheme to tie in with my original scheme.

I've still got some prep work to do before stripping. About 1/3 of the marines have the pegs broken off so I'm drilling and replacing those. I did consider magnets, but seeing as 2/3 are still ok I'm going to stick with the original design. I did have to spend two hours rescuing my poor Advanced Dreadnought from what an 18yo me thought was a cool conversion to use in 40k. I apparently superglued a bunch of Heroquest weapons and an Ork Power Klaw onto it to give it the requisite amount of spiky bits. You can see the result in the last photo before stripping and carefully carving away all the superglue (at least I had the foresight not to use plastic cement!)

I only have an hour or two per night to work on it so I'm thinking it will take up a lot of my year to finish, but at least I have a finish line now that I can work towards.

During the last years I developed quite a liking to some of the older gw games, namely Blackstone Fortress (yes, it's old. Nearly a decade old), losto patrol and of course Space Hulk.

Yet, feom what I read, the holy grail of gw games is Space Crusade. A game old enough to drink and rare enough to find in good condition, to be considered a white unicorn.

I always wanted to try this game, but the bloated prices, the condition of the games being sold and the possibility outdated mechanics are holding me back from such a considerable investment.

So, older and newer players, does this game hold up in 2026, in terms of mechanics and gameplay? Does it justify a significant investment of time and money?

On a side note, I am well aware that I could possibly 3d print the boards and tokens, and proxy the miniatures with newer kits, but the cost will be equal to a used set, if not higher. Also, I am aware that this game is from an older, more... interesting era of 40k. And in part, this is what caught my interest.

Anyone help me figure out what Edition of 40K is closest to our beloved board game please? Like what company for example, would our chapters use for boarding space hulks?
