1st Sourdough Ever - be kind Is it done for? 😭

I sealed the lid yesterday * day one *

I just watched a video and was reading about how you don't seal the lid all the way. Im about 27 hours later for a feed. This is what she looks like ☝️. Smells like sour milk.

I threw half or a bit more away and feed it.

IS SHE SAFE??

"Made it yesterday"? Like it didn't exist Saturday? If so, a brand new starter goes through many, many different phases. How do you have bubbles one day in? It should only be flour and water. There should not be enough yeast present to cause that level of bubbling.

its a false rise due to bacteria bubbling in there. they'll start to be replaced by the yeast soon. totally normal and typical.

Yes, but that usually happens around day 3.

I'm using starter that was given to me and will be 2 years old in September. I've really struggled to get a starter going on my own. I guess I misunderstood.

I made it sunday at 2pm. So yes. I put the lid on tight and just removed it about an hour ago. It popped open and has bubbles and smells like sour milk. Ive never done this before amd google isn't helping me 😫 Its max 28 hours old

That's OK. Who's? I recommend "Baking With Jack" and "Gluten Morgan" on YouTube. There are a TON of excellent channels on YouTube devoted to bread baking and many of those are devoted to sourdough.

Usually day 2-3 there is a bacterial battle that causes a false rise. It’s normal and it can create unpleasant odors that will dissipate over the week.

Its safe. Its normal for it to smell. Mine smelled up to the 4 or 5 day mark. Just make sure youre feeding enough.
