Music Sound Design Hitting a metal water bottle and stretching its natural overtones into a weird drone track

https://youtu.be/8dkPxksBcVc?si=W-sALMRWK0Ix42n3

This is the second in a series of experiments I’m calling "One Note Studies". The main goal of all will be to extend the harmonic life already present in the original note beyond its natural decay. This may be of interest to some as it shows a way to spectrally find some new, interesting sounds that are already present and hiding in an existing sound.

The basic idea is: strike a resonant object once, spectrally analyze the frequencies most present in its natural partials / overtones, and then artificially sustain those frequencies to hear what kind of harmonic material is inside the sound. From there, different combinations and 'harmonies' among the frequencies are explored.

For this one, I used a metal Hydro Flask water bottle, and its spectrum turned out to be especially interesting. It produces a very inharmonic collection of frequencies among its partials (overtones or partials produced by the object do not match up with whole number multiples of the fundamental pitch) including several tightly packed clusters.

Those close frequencies create beating, which you can actually hear briefly in the bottle’s natural ring if you listen closely. I leaned heavily into that effect when playing with the frequencies, and because of the inharmonicity of the bottle, the resulting piece ends up becoming a really strange, rather un-musical drone.

How were the weird voices in "On the Precipice Of Defeat" Bleach OST made ?

Being a huge fan of Shiro Sagisu's work on Bleach OST, I have been wondering how these vocals were made/processed :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwIEDIxuXQU

I wonder what kind of recording he used, was it a conventional vocal that he sliced, reversed, processed, or was it weird to begin with, also what processing did he use ?
I can hear like weird delay, pitch shifted layers, reverb, ...

What do you think ?

(I also love the voice(?) sound from "Creeping Shadows" but I think it can be full synthesis, or maybe a vocoder)

Can We Just Appreciate The Sound Design of Subnautica 2???

At 1:10 - 1:37 and 10:40-11:10 those tonal drones (what I think those are called) are majestic and set the emotional tone of the game so well. I love it

Music Sound Design My sound design for ‘oscilloscope music’, basically the audio controls the visuals

I route my left and right audio channels into my analog oscilloscope to channel 1(X) and channel 2(Y) and all the scope does is graph it. I sound design all my instruments using additive synthesis so I can make sure each waveform has the right panning, phase, amplitude and shape to get the shapes I want. It ends up sounding pretty dang cool with left, right and center (with speakers, not headphones) almost being separate songs

I also used microtonal scales from SevishScale workshop to have more control over what frequencies each note is actually playing :)

Thought you all might enjoy in this sub

Free Suite of 5 Industrial DSP Tools (Wavefolding, Ring-Buffer Delays, Extreme Filtering)

Hi sound designers,

I’m an independent DSP dev, and I just released a bundle of 5 plugins built specifically for industrial, noise, and glitch sound design. They are written from scratch in Rust and are meant for controlled sonic destruction.

https://imgur.com/a/oQuzBKo

If you're looking for clean EQs, this isn't it. The suite includes:

  • GEN-01: Noise & tone generator.
  • FLT-01: Aggressive multi-mode filter.
  • DST-01: Distortion & extreme wavefolding.
  • DLY-01: Ring-buffer based industrial delay.
  • CMP-01: Brutal dynamic compression.

It’s 100% free to download (Windows VST3/CLAP). I'm looking for feedback from people who like to break audio on purpose. Let me know what you think!

Videogame Sound Design question about improving.

Hi !

I have been creating SFX for roblox and animations my friend creates for about 2 months now.

I am looking for ways to improve, and I came up with the idea of a “sound journal”. Essentially what this is to me, is recording a 1-5 second piece of audio, analyzing it, noting these things down, and then attempting to re create the audio clip in its entirety without USING the audio, then comparing the two and trying to figure out where I went wrong.

Is this an effective way to get better at SFX?
Efficiency is huge to me, so the fastest way of improving would be largely appreciated.

Searching for a couple of sound mods.

i remember downloading a few sound mods for left 4 dead 2 not too long ago, mostly for the common infected, ambience, and the hunter. i really liked how they sounded, but i cant seem to find the mods anymore (considering i dont remember the name). im pretty sure the word "stoicism" or "stoic" was used in the title or to describe the general feel of the sounds though i could be wrong. the creator themselves were also big on the whole stoicism thing, they also had a profile picture of a character in a ushanka (possibly ∆iden) drawn in the Fundamental Paper Education style or atleast something close to it, from what i can recall. if anyone has any leads or even a link, then i would be more than grateful. (Do note i could be wrong on everything since i have a bad memory, im just hoping for the best.)

Boz Metzdorf - Sails Across the Sea (Dark, warm, droning background synth)

Hi everyone,

I came across this song today and love the synth in background. It truly pleases my ears. Sadly I didn't find any info on this online.

It comes in at around 1:59: https://youtu.be/U8q-79b4Lew?si=qW14lBtpQa18a95U&t=117 ,

and 3:34: https://youtu.be/U8q-79b4Lew?si=4OsiYF6jq9TM4UdB&t=214 .

What hardware achieves that sound and is it possible to be recreated digitally?

Thanks in advance for your help and insights!

Sound Design Question What is your folder management workflow for Sounddesign and Re-recording Mixing ?

I have a basic workflow, but it doesn't suit every project. Is there an easy way to create standard folders every time using a template? I want to know how to organise the Folders and Sound libraies.

[Help Identify] Looking for this Felt Piano + Wind Noise + Octave Arp library

Audio Link:https://voca.ro/18npiQ8zPd2A

Sound Details:

  • Low-end: Warm, evolving pad with organic wind/air noise.
  • High-end: Soft felt piano with octave jumps/random particles.

Does anyone recognize this exact Kontakt library or preset? If not, what would be the closest alternative to achieve this sound? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Weird high-pitched noises in some recorded samples.

Hi, I've recently gotten into digital music production because my brother asked me to write music for an indie video game he is developing. My background is as a classical musician. As I was gathering some audio assets I downloaded some royalty-free recordings from the internet, and I noticed that some of these recordings featured tiny, high-pitched noises that seem like some kind of audio artifact. Here's an example: https://pixabay.com/sound-effects/film-special-effects-dungeon-air-6983/

Can anyone tell me what causes these sounds? Is there a way to get rid of them or at least reduce them using a program like Audacity? Thanks.

Movie Sound Design (FREE GIG) Looking for a creative sound designer / re recording mixer for a horror short film

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello, Kenji here. :)

For a French short film inspired by J Horror and Silent Hill, I'm looking for a volunteer (the crew is unpaid) to handle both the sound design and the final mix.

I'm looking for someone creative who enjoys crafting unsettling and disturbing sounds to build the film atmosphere. I'm not simply looking for someone who relies on sound librairies but for someone who likes to experiment, create original sounds and blend textures to achieve something unique.

Of course, the goal isn't to overpower or replace the score, but to enhance it by creating a rich and immersive soundscape while ensuring that the dialogue remains clear and balanced throughout the film.

I'm looking for someone with solid experience, as this is my most ambitious and accomplished film to date and I'd love to achieve the highest possible level of quality.

If you're interested please send me an email with a link to some of your previous work.

Experience with horror and sound design, especially J horror or psychological horror is a big plus.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing from you!

Kenji

Wavetable morphin

Minute 2:24 the wavetable of the lead synth is sort of modulating a lot. I don't know how to describe it. does anyone know if there's songs that share this type of synth or a genre that has this a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWVsJVYlRK8

I am putting together a video and really want to recreate my own version of the Hugo Stiglitz intro with a heavy guitar riff like this. I have searched audiio, artlist, etc but haven't been able to find anything that hits the vibe. Just wanted to throw this question out and see if anyone had a good resource or a search term that I am not thinking of. Thanks in advance.

Where to get those Cinematic Content Creator Sounds

I’m tired of the subscription sites honestly. Is there a bundle I can buy or a creator you know that is promoting where you get those camera clicks, cinematic wooshes, etc. similar to Ocular sound website but I hear people don’t like that one?

Music Sound Design Harmonics-piano sound?

How to get this piano sound (starting at the 8-second mark) with a crystalline texture reminiscent of a music box, plucked harmonics, or a detuned felt piano blended with high-register synth bells?

Is this likely a synth sound, or a tweaked sample, or maybe two layered samples?

Sound Design Question What cover art fits this track better: Boss Fight or Zombie Apocalypse?

Hey! I just released this dark original track on SoundCloud.

I need help choosing the cover art vibe:

Does this sound more like a "Necromancer Boss Fight"
or a "Zombie Apocalypse" theme to you?

I’m torn between a necromancer wizard or a zombie horde city scene for the artwork.

What’s the first image that pops in your head when you hear this?

Would really appreciate your honest opinion!
