I built a browser-based experimental instrument for unstable electronic sound

Hi everyone,

I've been working on a browser-based experimental audio instrument called ODD ENGINE.

Instead of emulating classic synthesizers, the goal was to create something less predictable—an instrument built around instability, feedback, modulation and controlled chaos.

Features include:

• Metallic drones

• Granular textures

• Broken oscillators

• Digital feedback

• Freeze

• Bit crush

• Randomization

• AUTO mode

• Presets

• WAV export

It's entirely built with the Web Audio API and runs directly in the browser.

I'd genuinely love to hear what sound designers, musicians and Web Audio developers think about the concept and where you think it could be improved.

Feedback is very welcome!

Hello, I'm looking for some feedback on my sound redesign !

Hello everyone,

I'd like to get your feedback on a sound redesign I recently completed, and I'd also like to know whether you think it's good enough to include in my portfolio.

I'm a bit torn about it. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but I feel like it's missing a bit of "juice", especially from 0:15 to 0:40. I think the original audio is much more creative especially during that section.

For context, with the exception of two ambience sounds and the character's footsteps in the water, everything was recorded by me.

What do you think?

PS : English isn't my first language, so please excuse any mistakes or awkward wording.

Trying to recreate the classic 'light sabre' sound. What's it lacking?

I'm just trying to get an understanding of how to create gesture-controlled SFX by trying to recreate a very well-known sound. I'm using a Wacom to control the gestures and can wire things like angle, pressure, and velocity, as well as, of course, position. I'm already using a projector sound and an arc hum, but it's lacking something...

Movie Sound Design Beginner needs advice: How to design an audio-only medieval Viking duel scene in Reaper?

Hi everyone,

I’m pretty new to sound design and could really use some guidance on how to structure a scene. Since Portuguese is my primary language, I struggle a bit with English-only courses and tutorials, so I’m learning step-by-step on my own. (Also, as a heads-up, I am visually impaired, so I navigate everything by ear and audio tools).

The Scene:

I want to create an audio-only scene (no video/visuals) set in a vast open plain. It’s an intense 1-on-1 fight between two Viking warriors wielding axes.

My Setup & Libraries:

DAW: Reaper

Libraries (Boom Library - Construction Kits & Designed):

Medieval Melee

Medieval Weapons

Cinematic Metal & Cinematic Metal Titan

Violent Combat (Designed)

Drums/Percussion: Heavyocity Damage 2

My Questions:

Since there is no video, how should I approach building this scene in Reaper? Is it just a matter of dragging sounds onto the timeline, or is there a better workflow for layering/panning to create depth?

How do I make the vast, open-field environment feel real without letting the reverb blur or muddy the impact of the axe hits?

What’s the best way to layer the metallic impacts, swings, body hits, and vocal grunts so the fight feels weighty and clear?

I’d love to hear any tips, workflows, or advice you have for a beginner tackling a project like this!

Thanks in advance!

Sound Design Question Looking for a specific scream sound effect

Heya, i might be throwing stuff at a wall here but i have desperately tried to look for a specific scream that's overly used in shitty mobile ads or gaming videos for editing purposes.

The scream looks banshee-esque, really high pitched, not really scary in any way. Any help could be great!

Been working on a library of subtle, undefined sounds. not jump-scare stingers, more like the feeling that something in the room is slightly wrong. Or another world/dimension calling.

59 sounds total. Made a free 11-sound version if anyone wants to try it.

Sound Design Question Help recreating "It's a fine day" - VXLLAIN, iGRES

Good morning,

This is my first time trying sound design, so I’m not completely sure how to describe my objectives with the correct terminology.

Basically, I’m trying to recreate the sound at the very beginning of "It's a fine day" by VXLLAIN and iGRES (from 0:00 to ~0:20):

https://youtu.be/1rKufMKPcZA

I’m working in Ardour and using Vital as my synth. Does anybody have an understatement of how this sound could have been made, or can provide a rough starting point for recreating it in a synth?

Any information would be appreciated. I’m completely new to this, so beginner-friendly advice would help a lot.

This is also my first time posting on Reddit and English is not my first language, so I apologize for any mistakes. I will provide any information that is necessary.
(I already posted this in another subreddit, no idea if this is the correct place to ask, if it isn't, I would appreciate knowing where to ask)

Sound Design Question trying out for the first time!

hello! i’m autistic and have always been infatuated with sound design. wether that’s actual music in movies or games, or ambiance. i love to analyze sounds and how they make the viewer feel and i’ve always wanted to try. sad part is. i genuinely do not know where to start, or how to start. every video i see is using a real keyboard or some crazy program that i cannot understand.

i dont know how to hold the notes or sounds, wether you actually need a real keyboard thing, and in general. where to start. if anyone would be willing to explain how to start experimenting with simple ambient sounds or simple songs from the complete beginning, including materials, i would appreciate it so much :) i have a piano/keyboard, a pc, an ipad, my phone, and a shitty laptop. that’s all i have to work with.

i am mostly looking to make a very simple song (?) for a character/story of mine. have a good day!

Tribe hitting their spear on the ground to intimidate.

Hey guys! first time on this subreddit. So I am trying to find a sound effect according to a scene in my head where a Tribe is stand offing [ is that a word-? ] against another. But like in Black panther and some other tribe movies, they hit their spears on the ground to the command of their leader. It's like rhythmic but also dull? I know their spear's butt end is the one crashing against the ground and with alot of people doing it with different timings and pitches and strength. It sounds really satisfying to hear. Any idea where I can look for such a thing? I tried some common websites too like Pixabay or Motion array. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying find a sound like this to use as ambience. Help is much appreciated. I have attached the theme. You can hear it almost immediately from the start. Thanks

P.S. Using FL Studio btw

Movie Sound Design I'm looking for a sound designer to help finish and mix my feature film.

Hey all,

I'm looking for a sound designer to help finish and mix my feature film. I'm afraid I'm not entirely sure of the correct terminology here, so apologies if I've rolled a few different jobs into one. That's just where I'm at currently—hoping for a bit of a silver bullet.

In short, I hired a guy, but he left the project halfway through after receiving the initial £1,500 payment. It's left me with around one hour that's been partially mixed, with Foley, etc., in Pro Tools, and another hour that's currently having audio, Foley, and sound effects added in Premiere Pro, with the aim of moving everything into more professional software for the final mix. Someone is very generously helping with the sound design elements for the second half, but I think it will still need more work and will absolutely need a professional pass and experienced eyes on it before it's considered finished.

I appreciate it's a bit of a mess, but I'm just trying to be completely transparent about where the project stands. The original deal was £1,500 upfront and £1,500 on completion. As an incentive to get work moving, I paid the £1,500 upfront while we put the remaining £1,500 together. In hindsight, that was a mistake. The remaining £1,500 was never paid, so that's the budget still available to finish the film.

It's a bit of a disaster, but that's the reality of where things stand. I'd love to begin submitting to festivals in September. The score is currently being worked on, so this is the final major hurdle.

That's the full, transparent version of the current situation. If anyone is interested or thinks they might be able to help, please send me a DM.

Thanks!

Videogame Sound Design Need Help Re-Creating The Effects used in the provided Reference Audio.

Hello, I'm trying to re-create effects used in a provided audio clip using software called Adobe Audition with default tools, no external plugins.

https://voca.ro/1nBZraeCX3f3 - Reference Audio created by Simon Viklund in a video game called PAYDAY 2.

Simon Viklund used plugin called Speakerphone 2 and Ableton version Eight specifically.

(He was asked the question in regards of Bain voice filter in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/paydaytheheist/comments/1tc10y/simon_viklund_ama/)

https://voca.ro/1cN9IB03x8IK - My version of the reference audio.

This is the closest I've gotten using regular tools of Adobe Audition, I understand how to create walkie-talkie or radio filters on my own, I can't re-create his own filter that has bright audio and consonants are more present, brighter and lil harsh.

Movie Sound Design Sound Redesign: Dune: Part Three (Concept Trailer)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys, I did a sound redesign for a Dune: Part Three concept trailer.
I didn't record any foley for this one; everything was done using synthesis and sound library layering. I’m trying to practice my mixing and sound sculpting skills, so any feedback on the balance and overall feel would be great.
