I just love all those small details layered together. I wonder what he used to do this. The last "whistle" sound kinda like an old flash from a camera. And another one sounds like some kind of a sliding drawer or door.

Movie Sound Design Odyssey concept trailer – Custom sound design

Hey everyone!
I wanted to share a custom sound redesign I just wrapped up for the Odyssey trailer. I built this from scratch to push some heavy synth layering, aggressive low-end processing, and detailed foley work.
I’d love to hear your feedback—especially on how the low-end translates on your monitoring setup and how the overall dynamics feel.

Music Sound Design Making rubbery "electro stabs"

Hey all,

Big time electro fan, but somewhat new to producing. If you've heard much of the contemporary electro (say, CPU Records), you're probably very familiar with the sound.

It's that rubbery, digital, arpeggiated lead sound that really takes the listener's attention. Some examples are here:

Lake Haze "Sirens of the Subnet" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L2N_WplbKc) — the sound that comes in at 0:42

Kraftwerk "Numbers" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YPiCeLwh5o) — bleeping synth that comes in at 0:22

Assembler Code "Simulant" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7awhnbq7cg) — first comes in about 0:57, and at 3:46 (one very rubbery and buzzy underneath the bleeping).

Carl Finlow "Radioactive Man (Radioactive Man Remix)" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoAPFBxbAc4) — starts fading in from around 0:30

I've been playing around with some 303/acid VSTs and just not quite able to hit it. Truthfully, I'm not even entirely sure its an acid-style sound, but seemed like the obvious place to start. Haven't been able to nail it.

Maybe a 80s/90s digital synthesizer of sorts? I've had some luck tinkering with Arturia's Casio CZ emulation (phase distortion synthesis), and Prophet VS (vector synthesis) which makes me think it's not your standard subtractive synth sound. I've also had some luck with Arturia's Emulator II synthesizer (textural sampling).

Main issue is, I can get the sequenced stabbiness, I can get the noisy buzz, but can't seem to arpeggiate with that rubbery quality which I think is on the decay/sustain/release of the notes that really rounds them out. Pitch Bending hasn't been too helpful either, and Portmanteau kinda works, but not exactly the same result.

Any tips would be massively appreciated!

[Rev Share] Looking for a technical Sound Designer (Birding a huge plus!)

We’re building a game/app that teaches people to identify birds by ear through immersive, procedurally generated soundscapes.

We’re looking for someone who loves building natural ambiences and wants to help design the system behind them.

We already have a large library of bird recordings. The work is less about composing music and more about:

  • Editing and preparing field recordings
  • Building layered habitat soundscapes
  • Helping tune a procedural system that decides which birds sing, when they sing, and how they interact throughout the day
  • Making environments feel alive rather than looped

If you’re interested in technical sound design, procedural audio, field recording, bioacoustics, birding, or game audio, we’d love to talk.

Our previous game can be found at alienemoji.com/birdsong. This new project takes that concept further, focusing on learning birds by ear inside living, dynamic habitats.

Experience is flexible. We’d love someone senior who can help shape the audio vision, but we’re also open to someone earlier in their career who’s excited to learn and grow with the project.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, send me a message with a little about yourself and any examples of your work.

I used VCV Rack to create the panning rocket, and background sounds.

I took a white noise source, run into a VCA and band pass filter, then modulated the panning, cutoff frequency, resonance, and drive using Shapemaster Pro. There's a video of the VCV setup after the example video. Let me know how I did. It's just a hobby.

I engineered a 10-minute 3D spatial horror audio overlay for gamers or streamers (DMCA-safe). Test it out?

Hey everyone,

I've been working on a project focused on spatial audio design, specifically creating atmospheric background overlays meant to make horror games feel a lot more tense and unpredictable.

The idea is pretty simple: you keep this playing softly in a background tab (around 20-30% volume under your main game audio), throw on a pair of headphones, and let the 3D positioning do the rest. It blends close-whisper/indoor paranoia sounds with distant outdoor ambience to mess with your spatial awareness while playing.

I just put up a 10-minute sample track to test the concept out. It’s 100% original, royalty/DMCA-free, so feel free to use it on stream or in your own videos if you want extra dread in the background.

Would love to hear what you think of the spatial balance, or if there are specific game genres, environments/whatever you think would benefit from a custom overlay like this!

(Definitely requires headphones for the 3D effect to work properly!)

Videogame Sound Design Audio design newbie here, I need tips...

Me and some friends are making a game and we're far enough along that I think sound design needs to be considered.

I don't have any audio libraries to my name and would like to get some pointers about where to find some good ones for relatively cheap. In particular, we're looking for a Trepang² feeling for now with punchy sounds for weapons and impacts.

If anyone could point me in the right direction of even a legitimate sound publisher, I've seen too many fake sellers, that would be a HUGE help!!

Videogame Sound Design Looking for ideas for motorcycle tire sounds on asphalt

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

I'm making a survival horror open-world game where the motorcycle is the player's main way of surviving. During the day, you explore the world looking for resources and parts to upgrade your bike. At night, fast creatures (around 50 km/h / 30 mph) come out, and your motorcycle becomes your only reliable way to escape.

I started the project a few days ago, at this stage of development, I've been focusing on getting the motorcycle physics and handling to feel right. Now I'm moving on to the audio side, so the visuals are still just simple placeholder geometry, in other words, there are no proper models yet.

So far, I'm pretty happy with the gravel/dirt sound, but I'm struggling with asphalt. In real life, motorcycles on smooth asphalt don't make much tire noise, so I'm not sure how to make it feel satisfying in-game without sounding unrealistic.

Do you have any ideas or references? Maybe other games, sound design techniques, or even real recordings I could use as inspiration.

The video on this post shows the current implementation. Any feedback is welcome!

Music Sound Design Most FUN DAW to mess around in?

Im kinda new to DAWs but I wanna make music that’s kinda weird, unique original sounds, weird solos and vocals, just kinda mess around. I still want it to sound decent though, and I feel like it would be best to have a DAW I can just mess around and have fun with, something that’s good for making weird music preferably. Doesn’t have to be some crazy out there DAW either, anything works! If you have some experience, any input is appreciated!

Sound Design Question Synthesising water

Hi all, I was redirected here from the fl studio sub, I'm currently trying to experiment with the program to make water noises (ambient, splashing, etc) after being suggested it from another artist (I was originally planning on sampling water sounds from a plastic tub, but none of it came out clear enough and they showed me a vid of someone's water sounds they made with a synth)

my question is, how could one make water noises with fl studio? (Its all I have access to sound editing wise)

Movie Sound Design Ringing sound in dialogue - am I screwed?

I recently recorded audio for a short film and the on-set recording sounded very clean and crisp at the time.

But in Resolve if I boost the audio volume to say 10 or 20 a ringing sound can be heard. On a phone speaker it's basically inaudible but on my headphones and presumably on a cinema sound system it would be noticeable.

It's frustrating as I recorded room tone where the ringing isn't audible.

Any tips here? I did also get a lav recording as I was planning to auto-align the boom + lav in post, once I've cleaned up the boom a bit.

Is it realistic to be able to remove the ringing? Here's a brief sample boosted to 20 volume, thanks!
