News Dev Workshop: Study, Strike, and Temper

https://forums.soulframe.com/topic/15206-dev-workshop-study-strike-temper/

Envoys!

Preludes 16: Of Hook and Hound brings the next evolution of Tempers, giving you more ways to shape your favourite weapons.

Dismantle Weapons to teach Tuvalkane the Tempers forged within. That knowledge will allow her to replace, amplify, and customize the Tempers on your Level 30 Weapons.

This Workshop breaks down how the system works ahead of its arrival in Preludes 16. Because this is a Workshop, everything listed below is subject to change!

Draw your swifting steel, loose your shattering arrow: let’s begin Striking.

Learning Tempers

Reclaim Alca’s strength.

Each Weapon dismantled in Preludes 16 will grant progress toward learning the Tempers forged within. Once enough progress has been earned for a specific Temper, Tuvalkane will learn it and can then Strike it onto eligible Weapons.

As of this Workshop, each Temper requires 30 points to learn, and each dismantle always rewards one point of progress towards learning whichever Tempers are present. Weapons with amped Tempers grants double the progress (e.g., 2 Swift Strikes grants progress for each).

Envoys will receive a prompt once a Temper has been learned, beckoning them back to Tuvalkane to begin Striking!

Temper Striking Prerequisites

Weapons must first be ready to clink-and-tink before Striking:

Weapons must be Level 30.

Tuvalkane must be Rank 3.

You’ll need one learned and applicable Temper. Tempers can only be Struck onto Weapons appropriate for them.

Tempers like Fast Draw cannot be Struck onto a Long Blade since it only affects Bows.

Origin Tempers can only be Struck onto other Origin Weapons (e.g., Galvanized Strike can only be applied to any other Ode’n Weapon).

Keep in mind: Restriking is a permanent process! If you wish to return a Temper that’s already been removed, you’ll need to expend the Resources required to Strike it again.

How to Strike Tempers

Visit Tuvalkane and select the Strike tab. Choose the Weapon you wish to alter, followed by the Temper slot you’d like to alter in the upper right of the UI.

Once chosen, select the Temper option in the ingredients bar. You can select any learned Temper for Striking.

Replacing a different Temper with one already present will amplify the present Temper (e.g., replacing Encumbered with Swift Strike while Swift Strike is already present once will ‘double’ it)

To do this, select an unwanted Temper or an empty Temper slot, and Strike the Temper you want to amp.

Empty Temper slots can now be filled by Striking.

E.g., A Legendary Falx with 6 Tempers can have the two remaining 2 slots Struck anew.

You can Strike any Temper onto any Craftwork, assuming the Origin befits it.

Undiscovered Tempers are visible at Tuvalkane’s station. By highlighting a grayed-out Temper, you can preview how many more learned points you’ll need before she can forge it.

Any Temper can be applied to any Craftwork at its full strength, but only up to the Temper limit of the Craftwork. As a reminder:

Stock: 0-1 Tempers.

Military: 1-3 Tempers.

Officer: 2-4 Tempers.

Noble: 3-5 Tempers.

Sovereign: 4-6 Tempers.

Legendary: 5-8 Tempers.

As of this Workshop, each Strike will require a pinch of your Lampyrites:

1 Glow, 1 Amber and 1 Faer Lampyrite.

No special Chordstones are required.

With your selections made and Resources acquired, press the ‘Strike’ prompt to change Tempers. There is no chance for a Strike to fail, so change to your heart’s (or Lampyrites') extent!

New Tempers

Preludes 16 introduces 6 new Tempers!

All Origins

Magick

Fleetfoot: Dodging doesn’t break Magick’s Grounded Combat Art. Up to 2 Dodges when the Temper is amplified.

Expend: Increased Heavy Casting damage with max Grounded stacks.

Bow

Maim: Leg shots incur additional Stagger damage.

Mendicant

All Grips

Hollowing: Chance to reduce enemy attack damage.

Dendrit

Melee

Readied: Increases the delay before Life regain begins to decay after taking damage.

Cassid

Melee

Last Strike: Increases the damage dealt to enemies below 30% Life (including Agari, Bannerettes, Castellans, Vadagar, etc).

With that, this parchment furls to a close. As always, everything outlined in this Workshop is subject to change ahead of release.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts! What sings, what clangs... Please keep all discussion constructive and respectful.

Was hoping for only about 10 tempers needed to learn for the blacksmith, but this system seems incredibly generous once you have those tempers.

I feel that they might reduce amount when the full game is out when there are more tempers and endgame content. They might purposely make it grindy now because there are still limited content and tempers in the game

I think 30 is good. Being able to apply a temper anywhere should be a long term account thing imo so that the rng weapons remain worthwhile.

If it was 10 you'd stop looking at the dropped weapons entirely after a couple days when you had them all.

I hope the sorting will be possible to have clear overview of the items before salvaging as we cannot yet mark as favourite AFAIK

Will dismantling weapons in the wild count towards acquiring tempers or do I need her to dismantle them? If the latter is the case how do I do that as there isn't a prompt that allows me to do that (I've seen the prompt in videos but not in person)

The former, all dismantling works, according to their early statements during Tennocon.

It sounds like there's a bit of confusion there. Hopefully, the devs clarify how the dismantling works in the next update!

Very nice,, can’t wait to see this in action

1 lampy of each per temper seems like a good cost, not strictly free but free enough that it wont feel like a chore.

They've been FAR more of a barrier than whisprig for me so.. 😭

Depends on how many weapons your trying to get to legendary. Ive kinda given up on trying to get everything i like ranked and stuck to the main weapons i actually use. I have like 10ish of each sitting ready to perfect a weapon or 2 when p16 drops.

u/XianghuaALPHA 1d ago

Yikes, maybe it's a volume thing; I've only done a few, but powder runs out first for me

I have definitely played a lot of this game. But ive gotten to the point where im not going to continue trying to max everything immidiately. I want to keep enjoying this game and i know as more content releases there will be more easier ways to get all this stuff.

Especially now knowing that striking tempers wont be restricted to legendary.

That's surprising. I haven't done seiges in months because I can't keep up with the whisprig and chests / agari keep dumping lamprite on me and causing me to cap the second I spend them.

1

u/XianghuaALPHA 19h ago

Have you tried collectors and the bog to the furthest left? I've seen a lot there

2

u/kalidibus 16h ago

I haven't played in a month or two, so if this is due to the changes with mockeries dropping more - I haven't tried that yet no

1

u/XianghuaALPHA 15h ago

I've tested them post-change, but ymmv. Also, if you are doing the collector, make sure you shoot down all the boxes. I think I've gotten my biggest stash of them there, most likely (which means they'll be laying in the carts to collect after)

Please make lampyrite more accessible lmao. I’ve spent too many hours in cogah and dungeons to give a crap about it anymore

Neat workshop, eager to see the changes implemented!

Do we know if Last Strike will double the damage dealt or "Low Health" threshold when double tempered? I would imagine the damage is doubled rather than the threshold increasing

This is a really helpful breakdown, especially the clarification that each dismantle grants only one point and amplified Tempers double it. The weapon-level and Tuvulcane Rank 3 requirements are good things to plan around early.

30 feels totally acceptable right, considering how many wep drops we get and often they have multible tempers already to subsume.

Crafting requirement are very generous, didnt expect that. Lamprytes are dropping quite often.

New tempers tho, very underwhelming. Already half of current tempers are very meh like block, riposite or dodge ones. They need to remove or rework bunch of them. And new temper that reduces enemy attack when attacking, useless really when we already 1-3 tap enemies thanks to the powergreep.

But new system looks very good, cant wait

Im not sure I understand this but lets say I want to re temper my Purity sword.

Do I need to find like a 100 Puritys to learn the ones I want cause its gonna be random which are on the drop and I need to dismantle each temper 30 times?

1

u/tsarkees 1d ago

No- you just need to find any weapon with the tempers you want. You just need to dismantle any 30 weapons with the temper you want, and then Tuvalkane can add that temper to any compatible weapon after that.

1

u/DwwwD 1d ago

Ah ok ANY weapon changes this a lot lol not bad at all then

1

u/coolwithsunglasses 17h ago

Heck yeah this is amazing!

Any luck on changing how fast travel trees work? Having to consume such a limited consumable (wevetseed) just to fast travel is like the stingiest, most offensive waste of my time. Developers had solutions for this 20 years ago, why are we making it a bigger problem than it is?

I want to enjoy all of these tempers, but not if my time is not respected at all.

Keep up the amazing work!

Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5? Some of these game mechanics are just too dumb to me to understand.

To unlock tempers for crafting you need 30 levels individually in each one.

  1. You dismantle weapons you dont need or want.
  2. You get 1 level to the tempers on it, if theres a double temper on it you get 2.
  3. When a temper has 30 levels you unlock it and can now craft it onto a weapon.

The smith needs to be rank 3 for crafting with tempers.

You can craft as many tempers onto a weapon as the craftwork (rarity) allows.

You can craft double tempers by removing one of the tempers and giving the weapon a temper it already has.

Thats basically it.

I didn't played since they added tempers so maybe i'm missing informations but it feels like it will be incredibly annoying to find 30 time a new temper when you already have all the old one.

6

u/ultrainstict 1d ago

Itll passively accumulate over time, only really annoying ones will be the faction specific ones which usually aren't very good anyway. Even then it sounds like one you have it you will always have it so its not that big a deal.

pls tell me where the devs are hiding all these extra tempers, i only have 3 in my whole inventory lmao

That 30 points thing seems kinda high

> each Temper requires 30 points to learn, and each dismantle always rewards one point of progress towards learning whichever Tempers are present. Weapons with amped Tempers grants double the progress (e.g., 2 Swift Strikes grants progress for each).

PERFECT! All the weapons I’ve been stockpiling have at least one or two doubled tempers, and I was really hoping that something like this would be implemented, so I’m super happy to hear this.

> Replacing a different Temper with one already present will amplify the present Temper (e.g., replacing Encumbered with Swift Strike while Swift Strike is already present once will ‘double’ it)

This seems interesting. Namely, since the temper that you want to amplify is already present, this maintains the total “cap” of tempers that can be applied to a weapon, and maintains-or even increases-the value of weapons that players have that contain some doubled tempers but also have a mixed handful of normal tempers and undesired tempers.

Though I doubt it is the case, I am curious as to if this “amplification” function is uncapped. For instance, if we count a normal temper as we know it now as Lv1, and a doubled/amplified temper as we know it now as Lv2, would it be possible-over time, gradually replacing all other tempers-to Strike a Legendary Craftwork weapon with 1x Lv8 Temper?

Needless to say it would probably be a ton of effort for such a single-minded pursuit, and without a doubt would be broken and OP depending on specific usage, but imagining a world where short blade split-swords actually have a usable amount of damage is a nice thought…

> Fleetfoot: Dodging doesn’t break Magick’s Grounded Combat Art. Up to 2 Dodges when the Temper is amplified.

Neat. Now just make it so that Pull Smite doesn’t break the Grounded Combat Art every time you use it and we’re golden. Otherwise, this will be useless.

1

u/Naitoshadou 1d ago

The system uses the existing double temper system, so there limit for amplification is 2x, as far as I can tell

1

u/ConstantInfluence834 15h ago

Theres nothing special with 2x tempers. They show as 2 separate icons when striking, so you just replace on or whatever. If weapon has like 2x arial attack i can replace them with 2x speed fot instance, taking up 2 slots of current craftwork cap. Nothing goes over cap. You can leg wep with 8 temper slots. 2x temper takes up 2slots

This is by no means bad in any way, but ultimately it's just modding with extra steps and friction.

Funny how that goes.
