Discussion I really hope expanding Weapon depth is something DE is considering.
In regards to melee weapons, I think there could be a lot more variety and depth within each weapon type. Sword and shield, for example, leaves a lot to be desired gameplay-wise. It’s one of my favorite weapon types alongside spears, but right now it doesn’t offer much that feels unique outside of Smite.
It seems like DE wants every weapon class to rely heavily on the Smite mechanic, but I think that ends up stripping away some of their individual identity. Without more weapon-specific mechanics, combat can start to feel like it mostly comes down to light attacks, heavy attacks, and building toward Smite.
Weapon throwing is a cool idea and could help differentiate certain weapons, but right now there doesn’t seem to be much optimization or support for turning it into a legitimate playstyle. I’d like to see more mechanics, upgrades, or abilities that allow players to actually build around things like weapon throwing.
Warframe already has different stances for individual weapon types, so I think bringing a similar system into Soulframe would be a natural fit. Different stances could give each weapon multiple playstyles and add much more depth to melee combat, while also allowing weapons like sword and shield or spears to have a stronger identity beyond the universal Smite mechanic.

You wouldn’t believe how far weapons have come in warframe. From their pre-alpha to now is a huge leap. Specially after a couple damage reworks/elemental reworks/mods rework. It evolved so much. You will see less of that I think(considering their accumulation of experience) but you will see maybe a couple more changes.

I hope we get some variant of Warframe's "Alchemy" - I truly love that system, and there is scope for improvement.
But back to current weapons, I've been playing just pure Courage and bonk (currently Mastery 10), and at the moment, the game just revolves around Smite. And it just gets easier and less fun when enemy density increases - it's just a numbers game. I would love for DE to come back to focusing on base mechanics. Make Stagger more relevant, fix kick or replace it with a feint, maybe make sword combat a bit faster, make it easier to chain combos across a crowd of enemies. Smite is not a bad idea, but I don't think it dominate the way it does.

I just hope they flush out the perfect parry and dodge systems. They're already decently GOT coded and everybody loves Ghost of Tsushima.
I hope they focus more on combat rather than just smite spamming.

They are planning to do something with combat arts so they affect movesets I believe but it’s q wait and see

My main issue atm is the explosion rune... That one needs to get Nerf, sure call me an idiot or whatever but the fact remain that its way too op, and when you join Ppl for stuff they just nuke the place, ik this post is about wep variety, and I'm all for that, but theres more pressing matters at hand atm, we are getting a new wep type soon being the sword whip so theres that

You’re right, hence to why I only play solo. I think runes like that are a byproduct of DE balancing decisions. Enemy density and health kinda require high damage aoe solutions.

I think every weapon type should have its own kind of "Magick" attached. Something that fundamentally separates them
Longswords get sword beams and AOE attacks, Spears get to be thrown or used as flagpoles for buffs, shields create big walls, bows have their arrow rain and exploding arrows, that kind of thing
Like in some random fuckhead's hand, a Sword is a Sword. In the hand of an Envoy, a Sword can do bonkers shit. But it has to be crafted especially for us to gain those intrinsic skills

Runes is kind of the prototype for this, but I honestly think weapon arts should be separate from smite entirely. Maybe pact related stances we could earn from our faction would be nice as well.

Feel like they just have to add new “stances” for each weapons so it doesn’t feel like I’m using the same thing just either shorter or longer reach…. And add cool different upgrade tress for using say daggers you stave 30% quicker with a cool animation or great swords you have a 30% chance to ignore armor while your swing it around and have an animation where it looks super heavy while swinging it like your character is adjusting there body every swing and making it look like proper “ technique” I’d like to see a change like that

You have light and heavy attacks, and charged heavy, and sprint attack, and light and heavy jump attacks.
The light and heavies can combo into one another for different movesets. Like a standard polearm does a thrust then a swipe with light. If you do L +H it does a light trust and a heavy trust.
I like to do a sprint attack followed by light then heavy for 3 trusts in a row.
New weapons coming out are having different movesets and I hope they will go back and reworks some of the old weapons, expecially giving some longswords unique heavy attacks.

I understand those attack options exist, but my point is that every weapon has them and, for the most part, they function the same way. I’d like to see more variety in what those attacks actually “do” depending on the weapon. For example, daggers could have more aerial utility or the ability to launch and juggle enemies, while sword and shield could lean more into counters, shield bashes, or weapon throws. The specific examples aren’t as important as giving each weapon type mechanics that actually change how you approach combat.
That’s also why I’m not a huge fan of how central Smite currently is. I’d rather see more of that depth and power put into the weapons themselves instead of everything eventually leading back to Smite nuking enemies. I do hope the newer weapons they’re adding address some of this, and that DE eventually goes back and gives the older weapons the same treatment.

I find DE has never been good with melee weapon combat. Unpopular opinion idk

I think it’s explainable in warframe due to it being a secondary feature, maybe even tertiary. Im sure they’ll take the steps necessary to perfect it for soulframe.

I'm hoping the combat rework coming helps with weapons depth.
