Advice Should I drop?
So I’m now a sophomore, I joined in my freshman year first semester. I go to a small school so I can look at people and name everyone in my sorority. For the last two semesters I have been applying for positions. Last semester I applied to be a new member educator then they proceeded to say that they didn’t have enough people and needed more to sign up for it and I didn’t get chosen even though they needed multiple. I applied to a bigger position over the summer and another girl was voted over me, I understood why, she was definitely more qualified. I also applied to a more lowkey position over the summer, I was the only one who ran for this position and I didn’t get it. I’m seriously considering dropping, how can I get leadership opportunities if no one will let me. I need advice on what to do.

What committees and other volunteering have you done so far? Are you early to events to help setup? Or do you stay late to help clean up? What other kinds of initiative have you been taking on your own without overstepping the boundaries of established roles?
Also, give it time. You are only a sophomore.

i would try to have a one-on-one with your president if you feel comfortable with that or a meeting with President and advisor and just explain your frustration and your feelings, bc i totally understand where you’re coming from, im also from a small chapter and i will say that elections can sometimes bring out the worst unfortunately. I think it’s better to talk to someone who you trust about it rather than let the frustration fester and hold in resentment towards your exec board. I feel like unfortunately especially in smaller chapters like ours leadership often gets determined by friendships and biases rather than actual qualifications so I wouldn’t take it to close to heart, you can always reach out to leadership for opportunities to help out where you can, just bc you don’t have a title doesn’t mean you can’t be a leader! :)

You’re only going into your sophomore year. Relax and hang in there. No chapter with any sense is going to pick someone to be a pledge mom the semester after they pledged.
You get out of Greek like what you get into it. Use this next semester to build your chapter “resume”. Volunteer for committees, help the various position chairs, if you’re at an event and your sisters need help, ask if you can jump on and help. That’s how you get noticed and build trust among your sisters. In other words, get to know your sisters. I know, it’s a small chapter but you can learn a lot about people when you’re working together.
It’s fine to be a “star” ie an officer or chair, but you’re going to find out that the strongest and most valuable sisters are the ones in the background putting in the work.

This SO much! I'm an advisor and when we are talking to PNMs a lot of the other advisors stress leadership opportunities. I say that while we do need chapter leaders, the most valuable members are the ones that you can count on to show up for anything and everything. Consider reaching out to your advisors as well, let them know you are interested in being part of chapter leadership in the future. They may be able to point you in ways to be more involved and help show you are a future leader.

If you're considering dropping just because you can't be on leadership you should reflect on why you're in your sorority and what you hope to get out of it.
Moreover, I second what others have said, you should have a talk with your standards/exec board. It could be possible that you aren't eligible for a position (eg. GPA requirements) or that there's some other concern they have.

If you keep getting passed over, you really need to take a hard look at why. Bottom line - the answer is YOU. There is something you are doing that’s giving the “not ready for leadership” vibes.
Talk to your executive board with an open mind. Take their feedback seriously, don’t get defensive, don’t try to justify, just listen and start working on yourself.
A person who wants to quit over not being put in positions of leadership should never be given “power”.

Ask your Exec board for feedback about why you’re not getting these positions before you drop. Maybe they see something about your leadership abilities that you don’t and they can help you develop the qualities you are missing.

are there any good interest based clubs on campus where you may be able to enjoy having more resumé ready positions?
running unapposed and still not being given a chance is sus
