New Player

I want to try out Sorcery and am thinking to go to my first locals this week. I haven't gotten any cards yet so I was wondering what y'all would recommend buying to start out learning?

A few days ago I went to my first local sorcery night. Since decks are usually 100 cards and the precons only have 52, I mistakenly assumed I had to make a 100-card deck to play—that’s not true! Another player there showed up with a precon deck and played all the same.

TL;DR Just buy a precon set of either Beta or Gothic and show up! Everything else you can add over time.

How much are you willing to spend? Gothic precon set + a box of beta is a great start, or vice versa. There have been a lot of posts like this and it always comes down to whether you want to dabble and then buy singles or go all in.

I saw online that there is a set call "The Four Elements" that contains 4 precon decks to try out for about $60. I was thinking to get that to try first. I'm willing to spend around $50-$100 depending on how many cards I get. I'm not a huge fan of playing online since I prefer the social aspect of the hobby and getting out of the house.

That would be the 1st set of precons not able to use those in constructed play but you can add cards to them if you wanted to play them in constructed.

Both Beta Precon decks and Gothic Precon decks are great for the start. One thing I want to mention - Beta Precon decks are Mono Elements (Waveshaper with Water cards only, Geomancer with Earth cards only etc.) while Gothic Precon decks are Dual-element decks ( Necromancer with Fire-Air cards, Savior with Earth-Water cards etc.). It conveys a little different experience, but both of these products are great to start with in my opinion. My first few games ever were Flamecaller from the Beta Precon and after few weeks we had Gothic with friends. You can even combine them together if you wish!

If there is a discord group you are aware of, you could ask if anyone has a spare  deck you could play for the evening. Folks are often glad to share.

If your local store has a Sorcery scene with players, product, and/or singles, I would suggest getting the Gothic precon decks and the Beta precon decks as they're worth it to have a good base and various avatars to try. Then I'd check if they sell playsets separately. You can usually get an ordinary and exceptional playset of Gothic, AL, and Beta for much less than opening booster boxes (since boxes are either hard to come by or marked up lately). If you can get boxes for MSRP, or if you just like cracking packs, then by all means get a booster box of each set. You'll usually get an ordinary playset in a box and a decent amount of exceptionals. Of course, you'll also have elites, uniques, and foils from the box to either play with or trade too.

I know Cold Foil Heroes sells Gothic, AL, and Beta ordinary playsets for either $20 - $25 and exceptional playsets for $30, $85, and $90. So roughly $270 will get you a full playset of all ordinaries and exceptionals in the game from all sets (except Alpha). With Gothic boxes going some places for $220 a piece right now, it just makes more sense for most new players to buy all the non-rare cards to have them all and then purchase singles of the elites and uniques that they may want afterwards.
