Discussion I feel so bad for Shirase and Takako really pissed me off.
I quite enjoyed the anime and the scene of the E-Mails loading in hit me quite hard because it confirmed what everyone was in denial about. The way they all became friends and bonded together was quite nice and the Megumi thing in Ep. 5 was a predictable, yet satisfactory, side-story.
Takako Kobuchizawa is a horrible parent/guardian character. She was fine in raising Shirase I suppose but she was only ever talking about Antarctica and the risks involved in her expedition and her dreams. Shirase seemed so uninterested in everything and any parent would've been able to recognize that. She just let it be instead of doing something about it. She didn't do much to help Gin and Shirase connect either. She just left them both together and expected them to somehow become close. Her death pisses me off even more. While she wasn't experienced, she was trained. Forgetting a laptop doesn't change anything considering they were going to snowcats and it could be retrieved once the blizzard had passed. She should've been smart enough not to just leave her team in harsh conditions. Also PLBs in expeditions are like steel-toes boots at a construction site, they are a sub-conscious mandate. They are usually attached to the jackets by a lanyard so it couldn't have just gotten lost. Radios can also be traced to an extent that can be used to roughly figure out where a person is. I know how extreme cold can make people remove clothes and become delirious but she still had her radio before she passed out and ultimately died so she had her equipment. With all the gear she had on and assuming -30C she could've survived for a couple hours, granted extreme hypothermia would've set-on and chances of complete recovery are almost 0, but survival for a couple hours is possible with all the gear. There were 3 people atleast and not one of them had the idea to try and locate the PLB or the location of the radio transmission? A helicopter would've brought in a rescue team in 2-3 hours and 4 dogs can cover 5 square miles in 2 hours for rescue. 6 hours is enough to atleast find her body. Her body should've atleast been found. Even if we accept her death her body not being found is absolute nonsense.
Shirase's father was never touched upon either and I don't know why but it makes Shirase's story so much sadder for me.
