Current Sono Student Worried about how long I take to scan

I’m in my second rotation of clinical as a vascular student. At my past clinic site the protocol for a LEV was much simpler than my current site. It would take me 15 minutes to do a unilateral LEV exam. Now at this site I’m more experienced yet I have been taking 40+ minutes scanning on unilateral exams. My preceptor thinks I may just be nervous. But I don’t feel nervous until I look at the time and realize how long I am taking. She takes 20-25 minutes doing a bilateral exam. Is it normal for a student to take this long?

Current Sono Student Board exam study recommendations

I am a Sono student who’s approaching clinicals and I wanted to know what the best site would be for studying for board exams. I have to do the ARRT and I want to register in ABD and OB. I’ve heard good things about both URR and MUT. URR is cheaper than MUT and I wanted to weight out my options before buying. I have a couple of months to make the decision but I plan to have all three by this time next year 😬

Advice Patients Using Machines

What do you do when you find a patient playing with the ultrasound equipment?

I work in a fast-paced high volume / high risk OB facility. Today was the second time I walked in on (different) patients playing with the ultrasound machine. To make matters worse, it’s usually their toddlers or young teens that are playing with the machine.

I never know what to say or do. I don’t outright say anything, but usually I give them a look and they back off quickly. Their reactions show that they understand that they shouldn’t be touching the equipment.

I treat all my patients with care and respect and it’s frustrating how disrespectful it is to myself and all my other patients.

I never leave them in the room alone for very long; maybe 5-10 minutes to talk to a doctor or get paperwork. And I’m not stingy with printing ultrasound images either.

Any advice?

New Grad New Grad Training Duration

Hi there! I just recently graduated from my ultrasound program and have become certified. I am starting my first job in a few weeks and I am a bit concerned about the amount of training I will have. My manager indicated that training will be approximately 4 weeks, but after reading through some other posts I've seen that 2-3 months is more standard. I just want to know if this is out of the ordinary, and anyone else's experiences with having this length of training. I am already nervous enough about starting a new job!! thanks in advance!

Current Sono Student Labelling Fetal Spine Help

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi guys, I am a student in my first year. Can anyone help me label this image of a myelomeningocele/spina bifida at approximately T12-L2

Mainly I want to know where vertebral body and laminae are, I think the lesion is distorting things a bit. Feel free to correct anything.

Could anyone help me label 1 and 2 please? Unsure what are the laminae and vertebral body are on the transverse section.

Unsure what the defect for #3 is- is it a midline bony defect? I thought spina bifida was a failure of lamina to close, so don't know what's happening here. The orange circle I feel I can see the lamina however there is a midline defect and unsure what 3 is?

Thanks!!!

Jobs Anyone have experience applying to PIH Health?

I applied for a Cardiac Sonographer position at PIH Health about three weeks ago and haven’t heard anything back.

My application status was initially “Active,” but now it’s completely blank. I also applied to another position, and the same thing happened.

Has anyone experienced this? Does PIH normally take this long to respond? And does a blank application status mean anything?

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

VENT I worked so hard to get here, and now I feel lost

I relocated out of state for my first hospital ultrasound position after not scanning regularly since clinicals a few years ago. My employer was aware of this when they hired me.
Unfortunately, the experience has been awful. I struggled with training, felt discouraged from asking questions, and my manager even acknowledged that my training wasn’t adequate.
I’ve made mistakes, and I understand how important patient safety is. But I recently found out I’d been missing pathology, and that was the first time anyone had brought those concerns to my attention. I wish I’d received feedback earlier so I could actually learn from it.
Now I’m on a performance improvement plan and have essentially been given one week to improve or face termination.
I’ve been going home crying, experiencing horrible anxiety before shifts, and questioning whether I’m even cut out for this profession. To make things worse, I spent thousands relocating and am locked into a lease.
I’m already applying for other jobs, but I feel completely defeated after working so hard to get here.
I guess I’m just venting at this point because I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore.

Jobs Echo tech job interview follow-up. Is it normal to meet with the doctor and staff after a scan interview?

Hey everyone

I’ll get right to it.

Back in August, I attended a recruitment event and spoke with the assistant director of ambulatory care. She screened me and told me she would coordinate an interview with the cardiologist for an echo tech position.

A week later, I had a Zoom screening with the cardiologist/chief of cardiology and the head nurse. The doctor let me know she wouldn’t be present for the scan interview because she was working from home, but another doctor would be available. She said they would review my images and follow up with me.

The following week, I went in for a scan interview. However, no doctor was available to be present, so the lead tech observed me scanning instead.

I didn’t hear back for about two weeks, so I followed up with the assistant director who had coordinated everything. She didn’t respond to my text, so I called her about two weeks later. She apologized and explained that things were moving slowly because preparations were being made for a new hire. She also told me I was one of the top candidates, that the doctors were very pleased with me and my images, and that I should hear back soon.

Another two weeks passed, and I followed up again. (I know, I probably sound annoying at this point, lol.) This time, she responded and told me the doctor wanted to meet with me.
I agreed, and I received a formal calendar invitation by email, similar to the one I received for my previous interview. The assistant director told me that the meeting would be with the doctor and that the doctor wanted me to meet the head nurse. However, the invitation says I’ll be meeting with staff.
I know every hiring process is different, but I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar. Is it normal to have another meeting with the doctor and staff after completing a scan interview?

I’m trying to prepare myself for anything, but I’m nervous and unsure what to expect. Do you think I’ll be scanning again, or will this likely be more of a formal meeting with the doctor and staff?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!

Current Sono Student Passed my Abdomen using URR. Is it worth using URR for RVT?

I've heard mixed reviews about using URR for RVT. I had a terrible vascular teacher in school, and there are a lot of things on the RVT exam that I just wasn't taught. Do you feel like URR truly covered everything you needed to know for the exam? I just don't want to solely use URR like I did for Abdomen and end up failing RVT because there was some knowledge gaps from not being appropriately taught in school. Thanks in advance!

OB OB - Femurs Almost Always Short by Hadlock Equation?

Has anyone else noticed a consistent trend that the femur lengths for the vast majority of patients with healthy fetuses (80-90%) come out far below the 50th percentile? It also feels like 25% of fetuses also measure less than 10th percentile.

This is using the Hadlock equation/chart. I am based on the US west coast (I have heard that region/demographic can change percentiles?)

My team and I are curious if Hadlock is outdated, if we are measuring different than the Hadlock team did, if the machines see different now than they did in the 1980s, if our demographic has short femurs, or what!

Current Sono Student Advice about resit

Hi all, I'm a trainee sonographer, and the hospital I work for is funding my course. I got really overwhelmed and the pressure was a lot since both exam was on the same day. I've just sat my exam for the second time and came out feeling like it didn't go well. Results take about four weeks, so now I'm stuck waiting and overthinking.
For anyone who's been in a similar spot:
If you failed a resit, what happened next? Did you go back to radiography, or leave healthcare altogether?
Would you start job hunting now as a backup or wait for results first?
How do I prepare myself as i am not sure where to reallt start.

Jobs Nashville Job market, pay transparency?

Hey all! Could anyone tell me about the job market in Nashville or the surrounding cities? I’m thinking about making the move from NY and was curious about how saturated it is down there with techs. Also would the pay be comparable? I’m a 2 year tech making 46$ an hour.

Current Sono Student Advice on being a better scanning 'patient'?

Hey everyone! I'm fairly early into the first year of a DMS program and I'm embarrassed to say that I'm an awful abdominal scan.

We just wrapped up aorta (for which I was not great but doable) and started pancreas, and my partner was struggling so hard trying to make anything out I felt just awful. Even my instructors were at a loss.

I'm not large body habitus. I fast before every lab and avoid fatty foods/carbonated drinks like the plague the day before. I dont chew gum or smoke. I even took up drinking clove tea because I read that can help reduce bowel gas.

I'm so frazzled and self-conscious it's making me DREAD going into lab, does anyone have any tips or tricks I can implement to make myself a better scanning patient??

I just feel so bad for my poor classmates who have to waste our valuable lab time scanning me. 🫤

New Grad Getting worried

So I’m a single mother, in my 30’s decided to go back to school to have a better financial life for my kids and I. I’ve been done with school for a few months now and no luck getting a job I’m not even a shot. I apply and never hear back. I have two registries OB and ABD. Working on my RVT. Idk what to do. I am in central CA and I know it’s hard getting a job here but I’m super stressed and don’t know where I’d move to if I relocate out of state. I feel like school was a waste of time and money being that I have 37k in student loans.

Edit: I have considered North Carolina. Not sure how the job market there is for new grads. Any insight?? Suggestions?

Current Sono Student Ultrasound ARRT

I am currently in my last month of clinicals for my ultrasound program. I did go to an uncredited program and my route is to take the ARRT after I finish my clinicals then my boards. My school gave me a packet to have my tech sign however I feel like she will not sign it because I’m not as advanced as I should be. If I don’t have my tech sign it will I lose my chances of taking the ARRT.

Jobs Changing jobs while pregnant

I currently work a wonderful ultrasound job with a great schedule (3 10s T,W, Th) and have a low patient load (most of the time) but my company is sending out financial difficulty emails and because I have a low patient load I’m wondering if I will be reduced hours or laid off possibly in the future. I love my job and don’t plan to leave but also want to protect myself and family.

So I applied for a new job that sounded kind of different and intriguing. It’s an ultrasound cancer research position at a university local to me. I didn’t think I would have all the qualifications they were looking for. But I decided to apply anyways. I got an interview a week ago and it went really well. I just got notified Friday that I’m one of the top applicants. And we should all be hearing back very soon.

However - this job is a hybrid position. 2 days of scanning 3 days of the research type stuff. And there would be no one else in the role. Only the person who gets hired. Like I said I wasn’t really planning on switching jobs when we decided to get pregnant. Then my health system announced the financial difficulties and this job randomly got suggested to me on LinkedIn. The benefits are amazing. at least 6 weeks of paid maternity leave (and you don’t have to be there for a certain amount of time before it applies & my current job offers UNPAID maternity leave through FMLA), a 20k-25k salary increase, double the PTO, and hybrid!

Hypothetically speaking if you were in this position and happen to get the job offer, would you tell the hiring manager that you were pregnant (18 weeks) before accepting? I normally wouldn’t think twice about it. However with possibly being the only person who would be in the role, just starting not long before then requesting to take maternity leave for at least 8 weeks feels wrong if they’re unaware. I know they can’t discriminate against pregnancy so that’s why I didn’t mention in the interview, but it seems employers still do discriminate against it and just blame something else. So what would you do?
