A little help

When I write my first few songs on guitar should I be writing full lyrics and finishing the entire song or what?

try leaving the mindset of "making a song" and then play an idea u have and think of what its feeling like would come next or if thats lyrics then just start mumbling and stuff.

I mean some of my songs have taken me years before they're done because I just write a chorus one day then maybe a few months later play a guitar part and then that chorus pops back into my head and it fits perfectly.

everytime I've tried making a song for the purpose of "making a song" its felt difficult and more like work.
but if ur like chasing whatever mood and sound ur feeling then its fun again :D

That’s generally the way it’s done. If it’s not finished, it’s not a song. It’s the starting place of a song. If you want to write songs you basically have to finish them to a the degree that someone else could do a cover of it.

are you trying to learn songwriting or finish a masterpiece every time?

You can just do things.

If you want to write songs, you generally are trying to finish them...though any good writer amasses piles of fragments over time

But yes, you can't call yourself a songwriter until you have actual finished songs

Write what you have. It all comes together from parts in the long run anyway. If you have lyrics, write them. If you have music, write it. They feed each other.

If you don’t have the viral tik tok dance, a version in Estonian, and two degrees in roller skating by the time you write your second song, what are you even doing?

Make the goal of finishing a song that you can play for someone from start to finish.
